There's a seller on ebay (
see his listing here ) currently selling the HP DPS 1200FB-1 A. The important part about that part number is the "-1" this is what denotes a 80 PLUS platinum certified model over one with no efficiency certification at all. Anyway it turns out that not only is the guy offering the best price around, but he's only about 100 miles from me. I already ordered two and will have them in-hand tomorrow, but since I know these are always in-demand I thought I'd offer to do a small (very small) "group buy" if anybody else needed a few.
It's common for the non-platinum version to be used in the RC community.
Here's a great write-up on how to modify them (this person ends up running them in parallel to produce 24v, which we won't need).
Things to note/my thoughts:
It's rated at 900 watts max on 110-120V input (most of the US), so if you want the full 1200 watt output you'll need to run a 240V line from your breaker box.
It has adjustable output voltage, from what I've seen you can go as low as 11.7v and as high as 12.7v, I'm sure there's more adjustment but none the less with summer coming up I know I'm going to like the ability to turn it down a bit (assuming the S5 will handle that)
It's not loud at all,
see this videoThis is easily the cheapest I've seen a Plat PSU at this power range, and he knocked the price down for me because shipping was cheap. I sent him a note about picking up the other 7 and picking them up in person but have not yet heard back.
If it interests anyone, I can take care of the modification of the unit, and I also have the tools to do my own 6-pin molex connectors (PCIE or "VGA power" as it seems to be called most often). I can make custom wires to whatever length and configuration you'd like so long as we don't exceed reason. I don't use breakout boards as I think they're expensive (I get it, low production PCBs aren't cheap) and too universal. And I like to tinker, it's why I'm still mining!
Anyway, if you need a PSU like this, even if it doesn't pan out, barring some issue when I get them tomorrow I'd say jump on this deal. I'll let you know what I hear back from him, if I don't get an email in the morning I'll call. As far as shipping logistics afterward, I can easily ship anywhere in the world and I have contract rates with UPS/FedEx so it's quite cost effective. Let me know your thoughts!
