Update to .24, disable your firewalls, and add a couple of fallback nodes and you should be set.
this... enable upnp if your router supports it, or setup port forwarding so you can get more than 8 connections.

update: i seems to be downloading blocks again, but very slowly. still far from 139894.
Is there any reason why you're not using version 0.3.24?
I'm using the 0.0.21 beta client on windows xp
I can't update the block chain, even with one or two connections. I've waited several hours with no updates at all. I transferred 99 BTC from my account at MtGox to my local wallet (or at least I tried to).
my transaction is in block 139894
but I am stuck only at block 136864
what can I do?
