as a general rule whenever your are rarely using some software (like Electrum or basically anything else) and then after a while you open it and encounter some problems, the first thing to do is to upgrade to the latest version*. the chances are the problem you are facing is already fixed in the new version.
in this case the problem was a bug in the network functions that could cause a crash of it, this was fixed and also used to force people to upgrade to new versions because the old versions had another bug that could be exploited by malicious servers and show them a misleading message such as a link to a malicious website hosting their malware disguised as real Electrum wallet.

* in case of Electrum make sure to verify the signature of the downloaded file before installing anything new.

Version 3.1.3 is outdated.

Update to latest version, but only download electrum from the official site: https://electrum.org.

If you see some message in your old version telling you to update via github, do NOT click on it.
There is a (not severe) vulnerability in the old versions which allow the remote server you are connected to, to display a custom message. This is a phishing message.

Download electrum from the official site and verify the signature to make sure you have the correct file.

Hi,
While I watch my account on slushpool fairly regularly, I do not watch my Electrum wallet that often. Yesterday, I opened Electrum and it said ,not connected, then I opened it a couple more times any it said it was syncing, except it was syncing for for 40 mins with no results. This morning I opened two times and the third time I finally saw all my transactions loading. Whew. Should I be using v3.3.8 ?

Thanks for any advice!
