I will not be surprised if Trumpolini tries the same thing at some point once he is sworn in.
He's already on record saying he thinks the National Guard should be used to roundup and deport the Illegal immigrants that came into the US during the Biden administration....

I will not pretend that I become expert in South Korean politics in one day (or 6 hours lol), but it was interesting to follow what was going.
From what I understood it's nothing more than dirty games between politicians. President and opposition to be precise. And there was no real reason to announce martial, North Korea was only used as excuse.
But it's a bit strange to see such things happening in South Korea. Usually you expect to see something similar somewhere in Eastern Europe, Afrifa or South America Smiley

This might be the first time I have heard of such a case where a president tries to impose martial law or be a dictator but in less than 24 hours, gets absolutely defeated by the lawmakers of the country. I think this shows how important to have the right people across the entire government no matter the branch. They are all equally important as they will all keep each other in check. It will be interesting to see what will happen next as there are talks of impeachment going around after the president pulled this move off.

Very legendary moment in global politics and would be most likely studied by our future lawyers and lawmakers.
This is indeed the importance of separation of power in action. The lawmakers stood their ground and ensured that that this draconian law never stands. Some legislators had to scale the fence and other obstructions to gain access to the parliament  to stop this rape of democracy. South Korean President Yoon Suk is just selfish because he declared this marshall law because he is unpopular and losing the support of the people. The opposition party said they have started an impeachment process to remove this disgrace to democracy.

The military also deserves some credit because they went back to they didn't take control of the country immediately and they went back to the barracks immediately after the Marshall law was repealed. Some power drunk military will cease the opportunity to take full control of the country.

Yoon (South Korean President) declared martial law around 10:30 p.m. local time Tuesday in an unannounced late-night TV address, accusing the country’s main opposition party of sympathizing with North Korea and of “anti-state” activities.

In a nation with a strong contemporary tradition of free speech, Yoon’s military decree banned all political activities, including protests, rallies, and actions by political parties, according to Yonhap news agency. It also prohibited “denying free democracy or attempting a subversion,” and “manipulating public opinion.”

Lawmakers flocked to the parliament, pushing their way past soldiers who had been deployed to keep the building blocked off.

In an extraordinary emergency late-night meeting, those present voted unanimously to block the decree, a vote the president is legally bound to obey.

By 4:30 a.m., Yoon announced he would comply and lift the martial law order, saying he had withdrawn the troops deployed earlier in the night.
