Sorry for necro'ing, but the heatmap is definitely not dead, and still one of my favorite charts!

Any plans to do the same with BitStamp instead of MtGox? I don't find the MtGox exchangerate authoritative any more.
Either add the same as a BitStamp version, or get done with MtGox altogether ;-)

I'm replacing my charts-collection one-by-one, I just asked phelix/blockchained the same ;-)

Cheers!

In the long term, the price of a BTC is likely to have an overall upwards drift. Therefore, if the heatmap is in USD, data from the early years will probably become invisible.
This is true. Okay, I will provide heatmaps of both volume*price as well as BTC volume.

Another reason to prefer BTC to USD is that the choice of USD is somewhat arbitrary.
It's not arbitrary at all, since it is a USD chart. I am simply displaying volume * price. (Giving volume a weighting.) Since it's a USD chart, volume * price is just USD volume Smiley

If for example, it was a EUR chart, I'd have chosen volume in EUR.

Thanks for the feedback!

I would prefer to have the heatmap in BTC rather than USD
Mind if I ask why?
In the long term, the price of a BTC is likely to have an overall upwards drift. Therefore, if the heatmap is in USD, data from the early years will probably become invisible.

On the other hand, there are already 7.6 million BTC, and the total quantity won't rise above 21 million BTC, so in the long run the BTC volumes will make for consistent charts. (I admit it's not quite so simple, because active traders are exchanging the same coins over and over again.)

Another reason to prefer BTC to USD is that the choice of USD is somewhat arbitrary. Over time, BTC exchange might shift towards other currencies such as sterling, the euro, or renminbi. But BTC will always be a useful and relevant figure, no matter what currency the BTC are being exchanged against, or by how much the fiat currency has inflated.

Heatmaps are awesome!
Great project Ferroh. Keep up the good work.
Hopefully you can give us dynamic realtime heat maps at some stage.
That would be very cool.

Well, generating these maps using my current method (python/numpy/matplotlib/bash scripts) with 500 data points takes several minutes to draw all charts, limiting my options for interactivity a bit.

However, I am working toward something much more interactive than 3 static charts Smiley

As for the update rate; realtime will not be implemented very soon, but 15 minute updates should be coming pretty soon.

I would prefer to have the heatmap in BTC rather than USD
Mind if I ask why?

1 million BTC traded 1 year ago when they were worth very little would be very hot, even though it is only say $10k worth of coins. But 0.02 million BTC traded today would be very cold (barely noticeable in fact), even though it is $60k worth of coins -- 6x more than the very hot spot 1 year ago!

In other words, it's easy to trade thousands of bitcoins per minute when they cost nothing, but much harder when they cost a lot more. This is why we display volume*price instead of just absolute volume.

Do you still want volume in just BTC?

and I would prefer a logarithmic scale for the price.
I can do that.

Here are 10 day, 60 day and all-time charts:

ferroh.com/charts.php

Currently they update twice per day, but when the 1 day chart is up, updates will increase to once per 15 minutes.

And yes, candlestick charts are almost done.

This project is only a few days old, and several other projects are simultaneously under development, so be gentle Smiley
