I do not think the Bitcoin forum should be treated and compared to a social networking sites. This is a forum board based on discussions, not social communication. I would honestly hate it to be a normative to put your actual face on your avatar here. Would be quite weird frankly...

why most of us didn't update the avatar with our real picture like we have done on facebook & twitter?

This is normal for most of the forum like DigitalPoint to WebHostingTalk. Forum is not a social network where people will use their picture to chance a dating Wink

I have seen few members who have uploaded their real profile pics but I am not sure if it was in this forum. Nobody is stopped from uploading their real picture and it's their wish if they or they don't.

Also, in the case of FB and Twitter, we mostly connect with users whom we know personally which is not the case on the forum.

How is it 'an interesting phenomenon' that bitcoin talk users don't have a photo of themselves as an avatar?
There are too many scammers & very intelligent tech people on these forums to risk any personal information.
I have facebook & several other social media sites with all my personal stuff on there.
Totally different here though, most of us don't know each other personally.
This is a site that a lot of people have a load of money stored in various forms, personal info is very sensitive here & rightly so.
Trust very few people in your life - I'll give you that tip for free.

Another question: Why should someone put his real picture as avatar here in the forum? Everyone is free to choose his avatar, and this is a normal thing (on every forum).

However this thread is in the wrong section, move it in the appropriate one.  (ctrl + f , search "move topic" >> and choose the correct section | probable "Meta").

first of all you can not compare a public forum with facebook and twiter. your forum profile is public and anyone can see your information but your facebook is private and you are using it to contact your friends and people you know. besides there is no reason for giving your identity while on a forum unless you are asking for money/investment or offering some kind of service that you need people to trust you.
also bitcoin is all about privacy and anonymity so again there is no reason for revealing identity unless for the reasons that i mentioned,

Who wants to link their real credentials with their BTC nickname and addresses? It doesn't really help with anything. Even if you claim your pic is real, there are no reasons to believe it anyway.

That is because most bitcoiners want to keep their personal information just that, personal.
And when it comes to Bitcoin, everybody wants to keep his financials private.

This is quite normal in a place wherein you must keep almost all of your personal information for yourself so as to prevent some attacks that may harm you and your family. Facebook and twitter is a different case. You need to chat with your friends and family members and to people you know so why choose a meaningless avatar completely unrelated to you? On the other hand, why post your face in front of people you don't know and assume that you'll be safe in terms of privacy?
