If you are curious I would recommend reading this thread where the answer has already been given.

I saw now you answered him just before me Smiley

You better read the whole thread before commenting, it's not so big, you know.
.. or you just accumulating posts for your sig. campaign?

Suggest to the OP to Lock this thread to avoid further spam, if he thinks that his question is now answered.

Dear all, I got the question well answered. Thanks for your being here!
I don't know if this is a glitch or something but looking at his post history he should have been at least Full Member by now and that is before the Merit System has been implements. He has posted 228 posts as of right now and has been active since 2012. Also I don't know if this has something to do with his post are mostly in the local thread and alternate cryptocurrencies. If his ranking is on a glitch his account is actually a Full Member which can wear avatars but what his forum profile is showing us that he is a member only.
Dude, you were right too!

There are many like him. The registration date is back from 2012. There were some changes before, I read that sometime ago all avatars were removed, then were allowed again. I think there were different rules on wearing avatar and not so many restrictions as today. I guess people wearing avatars with lower ranks back then kept their avatars till now.

That is correct, there was a hack in October 2013 https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/about-the-recent-attack-306878

It was initially suspected by many that the attack was done by exploiting a flaw in SMF which allows you to upload any file to the user avatars directory, and then using a misconfiguration in nginx to execute this file as a PHP script. However, this attack method seems impossible if PHP's security.limit_extensions is set.

Although the avatar exploit wasn't used the ability to change avatars was removed as a precaution and when it was brought back later only Full Members and above could use it. So any account that had an avatar before that date kept it.

His account is registered at August 31, 2012. All account registered at that time can wear avatar even brand new. New rules and meta are just changed recently

One more thing: there was a glitch that happened some time ago (can't remember when) but all(?) users had their activity boosted and they were Hero/Legendary members. After it was fixed, users who had added avatars during that period kept it despite their rank afterward.

Also there was a case with another member just few months ago, he couldn't remove his avatar because he got his rank lowered, but I can't find this thread anymore.

Thumb up! I actually read about it not so long ago because of security reason. But I didn't " connect the dots" here Smiley

Wow. Interesting discovery. I don't know about changes in forum rules related to avatar before reading your thread, iasenko.
Later today, I will search and read more about those changes. I think I can learn from the past changes of the forum.

He probably deleted his old posts and lost his rank, and somehow he didn't lose his avatar.
