I'm a relative newby here - been around for about 2 months now and to be honest I have never seen a place like this where the moderators have not stepped in to delete/suppress known scams/scammers.

The moderators seem great at moving new threads if they're in the incorrect forum but never seem to intervene when there are crooks and scammers post miners etc for sale.

My background is running forums. This past year I sold two of the largest forums on the website to a forum consolidation company. I won;t go into details but both of the forums that I ran - one I started and the other I purchased from a bankrupt company both had Alexa Rankings in the top 25,000 sites in the web.

I've been discussing with my wife getting back into the fray and starting a new site for anyone interested in Virtual Currency and the moderators would have the ability to intervene and protect unsuspecting people from scammers and also have to ability to kill posts from people introducing coins that are clearly scams, etc....

There are a lot of very knowledgable people on this forum and a lot of people who could benefit tremendously from those with knowledge.

In addition on the new forum vendors would have to clearly Identify themselves - I'm not sure how yet but anyone trying to take your money for hardware would have to submit themselves to a vetting process so you can be sure you're dealing with someone legit and if they scam someone I'd publish their IP address and everything known about them.

these are some of my thoughts and I'd like your thoughts also on a how a new forum could be better, safer, friendlier etc....

what would you folks like to see and what do you want?

I would not make  newbies wait 6 minutes between posts either because when you're new is when you have the most questions.

thanks in advance

Jeff

Hence the trust system, banning a scammer will just make him come back under another label using a different IP, having a trust system make me know which better that you can you trust a little more than other and the one to be cautious with

you have the trust system to reckognize a scammer, if you don't see a huge scammer inscription under his nickname..

yea - but they jury is still out on come companies like KNC Miner, Mining Asics, Black Arrow, etc...

are these companies really going to deliver or just really elaborate scams

I would not make newbies wait 6 minutes between posts either because when you're new is when you have the most questions.

Newbies ask a ton of questions, though. They also spam "thanks" posts a lot to have a higher post cost even though Activity is a better barometer of use. A good deal of information can be gleaned from just doing tons and tons of reading. I understand a lot of what you are saying, however, it does seem like a lot of users will post things like "Well, we all know BFL will never ship" without many users understanding why. There's a long history of activity, though, and one thing that really helped me was finding a few of the older members and just going through their post history. It's also interesting to actually read the general "Bitcoin Discussion" forum in reverse, starting from the first posts in 2010. You can do that here:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=1.22840

I'm not sure there's a perfect way to learn Bitcoin, but a lot of the newbies also don't seem to have a good grasp on the stuff listed in the FAQ on Bitcoin Myths:
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Myths

A lot of stuff is stickied for a reason, too. Doesn't seem to matter much, though.
Well the Activity barometer could be better...
for example i'm a very active Forum reader, not a writer. so if I spend much time reading for example the speculaton forum, the activity should go up, so if i write somethng, the reader should see, that i've spent much time in this forum since 2011.
now it's 18 days, 3 hours and 33 minutes. (if i had written every hour just one or two stupid comments, i'd be an hero member already...)

so IMO it makes more sense to make a combination of time online and posts (and somehow differentiate between subforums)
I agree the activity meter could be improved. It seems to count you as "logged in" only for a while after your last post. I'm sure I spent a lot more time here than it shows.

Shameless advertising here, but folks at minerdirect.com are looking to build a warmer and more generous community, so why not pop by and say hi?

People seem to be focusing on your newbie restriction comment which is the most trivial out of the ideas presented.

I agree that the staff turn a blind eye to scam artists, scam operations, and illegal activity in general.

I was burned during a trade when I first joined this forum and I was amazed by how lackadaisical the community was and especially the mods/staff as to my situation. I was deemed at fault for being scammed. There were no repercussions for the other party. To enrage me even further, he kept using the same name to scam more people even though I had presented evidence that he was a scamming piece of shit.

It's incredibly easy for the staff to say that this isn't our problem and all trades/activities are at your own risk but is this REALLY how you want to promote and grow a community? Everybody for themselves? There are a lot of people who will give up on something if they lose a few hundred dollars.  That isn't the direction I think we want to take bitcoin.

I see huge interest in a new bitcoin forum that will actually entice new members to join, stay, and grow the community.

Hell with the number of staff here involved in some of the biggest scams im not shocked.  This forum is dangerous at best for newbies.  In fact if i see someone with a staff title advertising something im running the other way not getting involved.

are you serious?

I thought the warning on bitcointalk.com about this place was just sour grapes.

when I ran my other forums scammers were banned and advertisers were vetted. to not protect the community which makes the forum beneficial is negligent as far as I'm concerned.

Think newbies restriction is bad here? Go to gparted forums LOL. gparted forums has it locked down. Cannot use vpn to register, cannot use gmail, hotmail ect, gotta use something like comcast, verizon, ISP email accounts when registering and then finally if you bypass all the security, after you write a long post and hit submit, you ogtta go search for the name of the creator of gparted and type that in then finally you posted up. THankfully I had old gmail account I signed up there few years ago. LOL.

So yea, its relaxed here.

Wow, that's nuts.

I guess this forum is nicer towards newbies, especially now that the newbie jail is gone.

I'm not sure about the amount of information you had in mind to sell equipment but that is because I value privacy but if someone want to sell mining equipment there should be some kind of information given to make sure they aren't scammers.

I'd like you to try and help fix this forum so users can stay here and benefit the community here instead of dividing people interested in crypto but if that doesn't work I like the other option also.
