Na im be say I no de alone in di line of thought say BBN naija show no get any meaningful impact for di viewers. Dem just de watch show wey no get any clear direction for wetin di viewers go gain for dem show. Wetin tire me na di hype wey di show de get and how many young people de take follow wetin dem de do for there. Anyway di organizers, housemates and di sponsors de benefit massively for di show, so on a business level na dem de cash in on di viewers wey de watch dem. I hope say organizers of reality shows go try to come up with shows wey go benefit di youths positively, no be to de show dem edited x-rated scenes.
If you want to come from a positive side, you will have reasons to give to it and if you also want to view it from a negative perspective, you can also have reasons to do that. Before then, it is good to establish that the organizers of the show are business people and their main purpose of starting the showbiz is to make money and not as a charity organization. If that's the case, for the business to have survive since the first season was released in 2006, means it is a good paying business to venture into in Nigeria. Big brother Naija have had a number of 9 series since it started in 2006 up till today as we speak.
Now, let me begin with the positive side of hosting such reality shows like Big Brother Naija. But before I go far, let me also inform you that I've not really been a supporter of such reality show programs since to me it goes against my religion especially my morality, hence I'm not a fan of BBN. Having said that, there are a lot of aristocratic introvertial people out there who live indoors almost all the time as they have little or no business outside, instead of being bored and depressed with their comfort zone, they use BBN to engage themselves and to the least, experience the way people live their lives based on the characters in there. These are the kind of audience that the organizers of the show are targeting.
Secondly, there are other young and old people out there sorting for reality show contents but could only get that from the South African, British and American shows, with the introduction of Big Brother Naija, such audience were already potential audience and were the first point of patronage to the company.
Thirdly, Nigerians in Diaspora. These are another large community of people living in foreign countries for a long time and looking for local contents to perch on. With the coming of the Big Brother Naija, it was easy to bring them on board as they have been yearning for such local contents.
Talking about the values it may have on the young people, the Big Brother Naija show also have its economic aspect and how it contributes to the Nigerian economy. When you look deeply into it, there are voting processes that take place during the selection of the housemates, it is done based on text messages which directly or indirectly, will benefit those selling recharge cards and so on.
We've seen instances where people go as far as purchasing cable subscriptions and buying new DSTV decoders to watch the show. The DSTV guys get their commissions whenever they subscribe and gets even more when people buy new DSTV decoders from them. We've not talk about the bloggers employed to handle their pages and those working as staff members in the company. There are also revenues generated to the Government one way or the other.
And a couple of more positives.
On a flip side, Big Brother Naija also have its negative side which includes the X-rated contents that you mentioned which can impact on the characters of the viewers negatively. Due to the poor censorship position of the country, the programs may display or utter contents that should not be watched by the public domain, on a general times.
The big brother Naija is an adult rated content but how many parents can truly control what their kids watch today. I wish they can make it really more educational by touching on the current things that affect us as Nigerians, I feel that will be better. Things like engaging on hot topic discussions and debates about the current economic realities facing the country and trying to proffer solutions. I feel to would have been more interesting than just being empty.
And many more negatives other members have mentioned here.
