Which bitcoin wallet are you using?

If you are using bitcoin core, click "File", "Sign message", enter your bitcoin address and messsage, and finally click the "Sign Message" button.
I did this the first time today. I got my signature, so what do I do with it?
How do I check this message?

Go to the "verify message" tab, insert the address which signed the message, the message body and the signature, and click the verify button.

Quoting doesn't help - quotes can be faked and the post deleted. I reccommend sending a message to DefaultTrust, going to the Outbox, hovering over the link of your PM and writing down the ID (number at the end).
If you posted a message in the auction section of these forums then your address will be safe as you cannot edit nor delete these messages.

But proving you posted that address and own that address could be a different story the hacker could of had hold of the account for a long time and posted that address.

And, what would happen if you switched to a new address? It would be hard proving that you're the owner of the account, I'm guessing.

You would keep the old address too, knowing that you used it for account verification.

IMO, the easiest way is to use https://brainwallet.github.io/#verifyGrin

That would be why you would post your address in a auction listing early on when you first create your account, or when your account reaches any meaningful status (has positive trust, is a Senior Member or above).

It would be easy to prove that you owned that address as you could simply sign a message with your wallet from that address.

I thought secret questions could not be changed. They are meant to be a passworld you won't be typing everywhere, so the keylogers won't catch, then no need to change if you use a strong secret passworld with maximum length and store it in some vault or something.

I use Electrum and Blockchain wallet

For Blockchain.info, check https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.1957913
For Electrum, it is in Tools -> Sign/verify message.

Yes, As I mentioned I PM'd my address to default trust, I just don't know how to do this part:

Code:
-----BEGIN BITCOIN SIGNED MESSAGE-----
My account has been hacked/lost. Please reset the email to . The current date is .
-----BEGIN SIGNATURE-----

-----END BITCOIN SIGNED MESSAGE-----

I hope I never have to do this but just trying to understand how it is done.

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/recovering-hacked-accounts-or-accounts-with-lost-passwords-497545

Read the above. You need to be able to sign an address associated with the account and PM theymos with the deets.

Sorry OP, I hope it never happens to me or anyone else, I have already done the pm sending part, is there a guide somewhere on how to do the gpg key thing? I don't know much about it.

Thanks

It's different depending on which wallet you use. If you don't get an answer here, might be worth making a new post stating such.

If you are talking GPG, it is not related to bitcoin wallet at all.
Or, are you asking about the signing a message with your bitcoin address?  Huh

You're right, I'll wait a bit and search the forum for maybe it has been asked/explained before, if not I'll open a thread for it. To answer your question, I use Electrum and Blockchain wallet.

Next time you better have hard password to crack and make sure you have all security features enabled. But why would someone hack your account on forum, do you have any private PM's or what?

Stolen accounts can be used for a number of malicious activities including, but not limited to, spamming phishing links via PM, shilling for a ponzi scheme or a scamcoin, abusing the Trust system, scamming the account owner's friends and acquaintances, and selling it for BTC before the account owner discovers that it was compromised.

I've got the same issue, but it seems that Theymos is ignoring my PMs, even though I'm able to prove my identity from a signed address.  Cry

Looks like my account was hacked, the email address was changed, the security question was changed, and they added a donation link to my signature (that appears to be it thus far) ...

Any way to recover the account at this point?

can I asked how did it happen? I mean how did someone compromise your account?

You had some easy password to your e-mail? or to your forum?
Have you checked your comp for any viruses/malwares?

This is interesting how many accounts get hacked .... Smiley

I need to change my passwords Cheesy now I will use 30+ Cheesy

Doesn't look like I'm getting that one back, so, posting one of my BTC addresses in case I need to ever recover this account -

12etkEdwV2Ev5v9nskm6XWwVYu7p5h4JUX

Quoting for posterity (hackers can edit posts too).

You might be better off sending a PM to the account "DefaultTrust" and making a note of the message id (in the address bar). I'm sure that was recommended somewhere by a member of staff.
