As an alternative, you could use http://gifcountdown.com/
It's not the value of dark that changes the background color, it's the ampersand (&) preceding it.

I can't edit my above post for some reason, but do you know how to change the background color from green to black properly?

Thanks! I've seen similar countdown timers, but I never realized that was how you made them.
After spending quite a bit of time searching both the Bitcointalk.org forum and Google, and not finding simple instructions for how to do this, I thought I'd add type this up. I eventually figured it out by right clicking on a post that had a countdown timer and looking through the source code. Hope this saves you some time.
This will add a countdown timer to your post, like the one below. This particular one is counting down to New Years Day 2014 (UTC).
It's pretty simple once you know how!
If you need help converting your local time to UTC take a look at this website:

This will add a countdown timer to your post, like the one below. This particular one is counting down to New Years Day 2014 (UTC).

- Click on the Insert Image button. It's above the Wink emoticon.
- This will add the start and end img tags in [square brackets]. You can type them in yourself if you like.
- Insert this URL between the tags: https://www.onnit.com/emails/_modules/timer/?end=2014-01-01+00:00:00UTC&dark=1
- Edit the date and time (directly after /?end=) to set when you would like the countdown timer to reach zero.
