Yes, I read the news that Libra has changed its name to Diem. The main reason for changing the name is to get regulatory approvals. On the other hand, there are many fake projects who used name of Libra, many people are having misconceptions about Libra. To overcome that, Libra changed their names before lunch.

Until now I still don't know why Libra rebranded before its release, even though Libra is a good name and is well known to many people.
Based on my guess, maybe this is a marketing strategy from Facebook to make Diem's release viral. But I read in several articles that
Diem got a lawsuit, It seems that Facebook always gets into trouble when it comes to releasing crypto coins that it creates. There may be
parties who don't want Libra / Diem to be released.
Could it be for marketing purposes? I don't think it's that simple. I still believe that it has to do with the regulations they are currently trying to fit. they are still very difficult in terms of regulations in the US and have many obstacles in releasing their products, for marketing problems I don't think it's a big problem because they have Facebook where they can use it as a promotional medium at any time

Usually owners try to register their trademarks so that competitors do not have the slightest chance of using them. Therefore, the entire trademark as a whole and its component parts, such as text, graphics, design elements, and so on, are registered. All this makes the trademark much more secure. Facebook did something similar.

(Edited)
So according to what you say, I can't create a website "fresh apple" and "born under the sign of libra".
And since you two have so solid evidence, this is normal. OK, as you guys say. I guess I am stupid.

We probably don't explain well how this system works. If Facebook registered the Libra trademark, it does not mean that you can't use THIS word anywhere else, for example, to create the site you are talking about. However, this means that you can't create another project called LIBRA on the cryptocurrency market. Or with a very similar name or logo. In this case, Facebook will drag you to the courts.

I have selected a decision of the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center in which the plaintiff along with Facebook, Inc. acts and Libra Association against the company Registration Private: https://www.wipo.int/amc/en/domains/decisions/text/2020/d2020-0530.html THE same decision lists Libra trademark registrations that are owned by the Libra Association.

Good job!

Although this doesn't make sense to me (if this would be as you are saying, then I would have been forced to buy apples from Apple store), you do have some sort of proof and I don't find any.
I am not convinced what "word mark" means.
However, I'll leave this as it is. As I said, you do have proof while I have none and I can respect that.

I've checked a few of them. They are about "Facebook-Libra" trademark, or "IBUK Libra" (some Polish library) and not trademark for the world Libra.
It all depends on what this brand is associated with. There may be several brands of "Libra". One will be associated with a coin in the crypto market, another may belong to foodstuffs, the third to diapers, and so on. The main thing is that there are not several products with the same brand names in the same category. Also, everything still depends on the countries for which the trademark registration is made. There are many nuances.

On December 1, the Libra Association announced a change in its name. The campaign now has the name " Diem». https://twitter.com/DiemAssociation/status/1333790806314926089 Also when going to the address https://libra.org, redirects to a new address https://www.diem.com The campaign logo remains the same.
https://www.diem.com/en-us/updates/diem-association/

I understand this was done so that the negative that preceded the launch of Libra was not transferred to the project that is being launched in January. How do you explain the reason for this rebranding?

I know there are hundreds and thousands of people that are crazy for this project especially because it is com8ng from one of the top tech companies of the world but to be honest this rebranding seems dull and I have lost interest in this project now.

Hello, friend.
There is such a wonderful site World Intellectual Property Organization where you can see information about registration of patents, trademarks and other objects that are intellectual property.
Here is what I found there at the request of the LIBRA:
https://www.wipo.int/tools/en/gsearch.html?cx=016458537594905406506%3Ahmturfwvzzq&cof=FORID%3A11&q=Libra#gsc.tab=0&gsc.q=Libra&gsc.page=1

You have provided a good link that allows you to confirm my words that I said earlier about owning the Libra trademark. If you look at the decisions of the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center, you can see that all the disputed decisions regarding the ownership of this trademark were made in favor of Facebook Inc.

I know a little about this organization and how it works, which is why I provided a link to it to help confirm what you said.

Yeah, it feels weird, changing the name before it's launched, the Libra name was so famous, There are a number of topics that talk about Libra in here. Diem is so strange for everyone, i am confused by the name change.
it's a grave military mistake to replace the general during the battle.

Libra to Diem rebranding is now facing a lawsuit. Last December 01, Libra announced that they will be changed their name to Diem Association. Their rebranding aims to give a new face to the project after major setbacks following the intense regulatory battle it faced when it was announced last year. But yet again they facing another legal battle and this time with Diem. https://crypto.co/technology/from-libra-to-diem-rebranding-faces-lawsuit/
Before they choose another name for rebranding, they should have looked at this kind of possibilities first. I mean, it's a common issue for brand names so they should have ensured that there would be no problem first. They want to rebrand Libra to give a new face to the project, but with this new issue, it seems that they will still face some issues again before their launch.

It is a bit strange for me, why Libra should be changed to Diem? This rebranding seems to not bring a significant impact for the project. Instead, many people feel not familiar with the new name. People have been familiar with "Libra" name, it is cool. On the other hand, Diem seems unfamiliar, I never know the word and what the meaning is. I hope this rebranding won't make a disaster for the project.

Was it official already? I really don't think that's a good name they were already know as Libra and many people are already looking forward to it. By the way where could I possibly buy the Libra coin? will it be listed on an decentralized exchange?

Ofc, it was officially announced. But I haven't really seen much about Diems launch at all (tbh I don't really care either). Will they hold an official TGE for the launch or will they just start to accept USD on Facebook and give you Diem in exchange?

Part of the marketing strategy, but will it work? Still it won't please lawmakers, the project has still a lot of things to workout. This is a very ambitious project by Zuckerberg because it will challenge existing cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. If their project will succeed they'll get a big chunk of market but if they fail they are going to part of coin obituary, but its Facebook they have best resources in terms of advertising their agenda lets look close.

Now this name seems to me very unique in comparison of previous name maybe libra team has something different strategy for their project that's why they had to change the name of the project even though I don't think it will leave any negative impact on the project the main point is the structure of this project must be strong to achieve success.

Maybe they are scaping from negative feedbacks from the previous name that is why the rebranding happened. It is something like a marketing strategy though the idea of the project is the same so it does not matter at all. It does not matter on how many times the team would change it's projects name as long as they are making it a working project and not abandon it once they've got what they need from investors. Team matters most because good looking project name is nonsense if team are scammers and stupid.
well, as long as it still has Facebook tokens, it doesn't matter. however, still, there are still problems that previously needed to be resolved. besides, changing the name is not a problem as long as the team is the same. well, the most likely thing why they do this is to cover up the negative feedback they have received from the previous name.

It's possible they changed their Libra name to Silent because luck would go to Diem's side,
we know that Libra was a controversy in the last year, failed Libra to launch, and in 2021 they reportedly will,
and of course Diem is a good name choice.
Diem means silent in bahasa  Grin, .libra team ofcourse have special reason why need to change their name. especially to avoid warn from SEC as regulator in US . but overall its good step for libra , they move step a head to launched project. and for crypto market it will bring positive impact that will attract new investors come to market again.

It's all to cover up bad reputation.
Libra was already damaged before it launched but people won't be fooled again because it is easy to spot a currency launched by Facebook.
People are very sceptical towards Libra because it's a centralized coin issued by Facebook and different big corporations control it. People should just avoid it and use fair coins.

and of course Diem is a good name choice.
Yes, but it won't change people preventing from knowing how fraudulent Facebook's currency is.

It is not clear why they changed the name of the project, because everyone knows that Diem is Libra, well, of course, the creators of Diem have their own plans for this, so it remains to wait a little more and in 2021 we will already see what Diem is and we will see what heights Diem will reach.
Normal occurence when a project is domed like Libra back then if the company want to revive it, might aswell give a fresh name so that people won't get to know the past of the project or atleast  to make people put more hope to it rather than using the name of a failing project. Libra is already doomed by regulations and now we see the new relaunch of it called diem.

If you don't believe try to find some company that rename theirs just because past mistake. Pretty common occurence.

I've checked a few of them. They are about "Facebook-Libra" trademark, or "IBUK Libra" (some Polish library) and not trademark for the world Libra.

Following your logic, campaigns like Apple, Amazon, and many others are also not a trademark and are not protected by law.

Again, I am talking about the word Libra itself. And if I would be wrong in my logic, I would not be allowed allowed to buy apples from the market, I should get them from Apple Store.
Please make sure you understand what I am talking about when you are coming with counter-arguments.

Each trademark is registered in relation to a specific type of goods and services. I can't find a free article for you, because such information costs money. I heard it had a brand name problem during marketing on this project, but i find that the launch date is approaching the rebranding is the last change the project needs. perfecting before launch to avoid any operational disadvantages. This is a big project and has received much expectation from many people, i think these changes are the beginning of the project's early process.

It's more of a marketing strategy, they had legal problems with the first brand name.

It is not a mystery, it has already happened in the past with several brands.

Link: https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/503464/15-companies-changed-their-names

In each of these cases, the new brand name was chosen in accordance with the development goals. The same thing happened with Libra, whose name change is explained by the fact that "Diem" - means a new day for the project. But I still have a question: why did the Association leave the same logo when changing its name?

Exactly, the same question comes to my mind, if they want to rebrand, just the name won't make a big difference. Besides the concept of the projects is still the same if they keep the same logo they only do half-rebranding.

Maybe they had some discussion with other businesses with Libra name (there's at least a Libra Bank), but still "libra" is a common Latin word, hence not copyrighted.
Strange decision...

You're wrong. The Libra trademark is currently owned by Facebook Inc, which acquired it on April 20, 2019 from Libra Services Inc: https://www.theblockcrypto.com/daily/21954/facebook-acquired-a-trademark-from-a-little-known-tax-company-for-its-secret-crypto-project Thus, Facebook acquired the Libra trademark before it announced its crypto project. Accordingly, we can't talk about any problems that Facebook might have had in connection with the use of the Libra trademark.

I don't know what they did trademark, you linked a paid article I cannot read. Most probably internal details, workflow, maybe even graphics and fonts.
I was talking about the word itself. And the word Libra cannot be trademark-ed. I think that you may be confusing something there.

Its their part of strategy rebranding sometimes good to a business especially if it involve in a very controversial situation we all know that the Founder of Facebook who is also the creator of Libra testify in front of US regulators to defend Libra but after that situation still they are not yet launched lets we what this rebranding can bring in the future of Libra/Diem.

IMHO, I believe it was a strategy to make it more presentable and if possible to disconnect it from the previous bad publicity about the project. But I think the more interesting question why Diem? and what does it mean? and what does Diem stand for? By the way, I'm not in a hurry mode and January 2021 is on the doorstep so I think it's better to wait for that launch date to know more about Diem.

This is quite difficult to understand the purpose of the Libra team. Maybe the old project named Libra has failed, so they want to switch to the new name Diem to have better luck.
Or maybe because there are too many scam capital groups called Libra, they have changed the name of the project. When you search Google, you can also see that there are many calling channels with unclear information and if Libra continues the project, many people may be scammed. So maybe this is their main goal.

With all the negative coverage of Libra in recent years, it's not that surprising that they have changed the name.
This will certainly impress the regulators.  Wink
Well then, carpe diem, or whatever ...
I think they still have quite serious problems with existing regulations in the US. maybe we'll see another delay? even though they've changed their name, lol. or maybe they'll change some of their structures so that they fit the regulations, but I'm not really sure that will happen

With the change of name I think there is no difference for the development of libra projects, and we just wait later this project can develop quickly in the crypto space because for a long time crypto users have been waiting for the presence of libra because libra / diem holders are already very popular on social media, we just wait if this will also have a positive impact on the crypto world.
The fact is that those users who constantly follow this project can associate the new and old names and thus not be mistaken in their choice. But with regard to other users, certain concerns arise. All sorts of changes made by developers at one stage or another in the development of the project encourages the user to make certain mistakes.

you already explain the reason and i cant help but to agree with the reason that you have said because i was also involved ln the speculations and fuds happening in the introduction of libra coin before and they recieve numerous of unwanted statements from random people ,
they are afraid that this will be carried on thier final launch and they finalize thier decision of changing the coins name but why the logo is still the same ,
looking in thier logo still reminds me of the old bad times .

With all the negative coverage of Libra in recent years, it's not that surprising that they have changed the name.
This will certainly impress the regulators.  Wink
Well then, carpe diem, or whatever ...

I see the rebranding simply money thrown out of the window. People know about "Facebook's coin", no matter how it's called.

I think this will not make any difference, because for me name doesn't matter,
but maybe the libra team have some specific reason for this change and hopefully this new name will bring something good for this project
They hope by changing name it will be regulated, even though I think it is not certain it will be realized. The Libra team is already loss for thinking about how regulators will accept them, the launch is scheduled for January 2021, Let's see if after becoming DIEM the regulator will accept them in January, wait and see.

I dont see changing name could change the regulators decision. Maybe they change the name for some another reasons

..who want to invest..
Whats there to invest, its a stablecoin.
Pay dollar to get a dollar worth of whatever stablecoin,  minus fee's,  same in reverse.
Outright scary if the world is in such bad shape where people “invest” 1 dollar to get guaranteed 0.98 or less back

I wonder what is the main reason for these sudden changes before the launch, Maybe they are doing some strategies which they are the only one who knows about it. Anyway, there's nothing to worry about these changes because Libra came from a trusted source and those companies who backed it up are some giant companies out there. Therefore, those who wanted to invest need to read and look for their roadmaps to clarify the changes or for not to miss anything important in these update.

I hope it would be a blockchain based coin atleast because most of the features seem to be compromised already as a result of pressures from regulatory authorities and US government. If this stablecoin will not be linked to fb or whatsapp it could be a major setback for their investors and community.

Why did they change the name? In my opinion, using the name Libra looks really good because everyone already knows that Libra is coming, but changing the name will make Libra have to reintroduce and convince everyone that Libra really changed its name to Diem, so that people who want to invest in the Libra project don't think bad about this name change going forward.

It's more of a marketing strategy, they had legal problems with the first brand name.

It is not a mystery, it has already happened in the past with several brands.

In each of these cases, the new brand name was chosen in accordance with the development goals. The same thing happened with Libra, whose name change is explained by the fact that "Diem" - means a new day for the project. But I still have a question: why did the Association leave the same logo when changing its name?

They are rebranding maybe to hype up the release again. I mean Libra is already a hot topic a year ago but right now it's just not even becoming our concern instead we focuses more on paypal and visa nowadays which about to adopt cryptocurrency. Therefore, they decide to rebrand . Though Diem or Libra doesn't really matter in my opinion. What matters most is how they operate or what they really offer.

What was the reasoning behind the original name Libra anyway? I always saw Libra as the scales,,, so that is balance or justice, which I totally never got as a concept for an unfair brand to take advantage of its people with fees;)

Sometimes I get paid and in my receipt it says "per diem" which means "for each day". Maybe this is Facebook for daily payments who knows?

I am very excited about this project, but it seems the name of the project has changed and I do not understand why. They are really a big project of this market, the things you mentioned I think they need to calculate and prepare for it.

That doesn't make sense to see that. Can we expect libra will erase all of bad images when it was rebranding its name to the diem? People are knowing it correctly. The government and central banks who have been banning libra know surely about this too. I think that will not give an impact to the libra's reputation.
Maybe people just know if libra was a dead project and that's why they were rebranding it to the new name. people will know that as a new project.

This change in name is still a mistery to me.
They say they want a new beginning and a *fresh* name can give them a new start. Things haven't been so good for Libra's team due to politicians and regulators making a lot of pressure over project's partners since 2019, when it started. So much pressure resulted in partners Paypal and Visa leaving the project.
Probably many other partners Libra's team was counting on also fled and it made them rethink the name as a marketing strategy to mask the initial failure.

Well, at least that is what they say, although I'm not sure if that is the truth.

I think they are rebranding and changing the way libra was planned because of pressure from regulators and looks like Diem will just be another stablecoin backed by fiat usd so obviously the hype will reduce now.

Well, Libra name was widely spread negativly, and anyone who was even a tiny bit in crypto heard about it.
This however, wasn't broadcasted so much so many people will not know it's association with libra. Good move? We'll see

In any case, changing the name of the project and the coin itself two months before the official release will not contribute to the growth of its image.  There will be Diem, backed by a dollar, and perhaps not directly related to the social network Facebook, because US regulators insisted on it.  We will see soon what kind of stablecoin it will be and how it will differ from other stablecoins.  I don't expect anything special from her anymore.

didn't expect that, what could be their reason for rebranding it? i think the libra is good enough since it was already created a buzz for some time here on the forum and i think most people recognized that name rather than diem.

For me, too, this decision to rebrand surprised me. I think a brand like Libra should be worth a lot of money. We have recently seen a lot of fake airdrops that used the name Libra, because it was a well-known brand. I wrote about one of these scams here: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/fake-libra-token-scam-5193223

It should be recalled that Facebook Inc. acquired the Libra trademark from Libra Services Inc. who owned the Libra trademark.

So the most advertised Libra years back is now changing name to at least clear the image of the project?
I remember how Huge the topic and postings from Shills that time and even using Big names to connect in that project.

Yeah they might be New name but the Investors already Pinned them for prevention .
