Might not be as easy as you put it. I mean, you *could* fork existing code and find a suitable community, but there are other intricacies of making an altcoin and a compatible miner. Also, you need to understand the different types of algorithms. Pick one suitable to your needs. Understand POW, POS etc. You would need to integrate with pools/create a new pool. Server management, load handling, etc etc. Lot of serious work really!
But you're probably right. There are enough altcoins out there as it is. Unless the idea behind the coin is really solid, I don't understand why anybody would bother using it. A community is definitely important!
