Seems to be first come first serve really. As long as you're the first to get listed on exchanges/CoinMarketCap you'll most likely beat any copycats. I've seen a few coins/tokens attempt to use existing names or names that are extremely similar (like "Bit Coin" lol), but that doesn't usually go well.

I think that isn't possible, and there are a lot of altcoins with similar or equal name, specially for tokens
The best way is to create and reserve a unique name, and not similar to other alt coins

Exchanges can ask for a better ticker for less know coins. But there is no way you can force any coin to have a different name or don't have a same name.
You can fork bitcoin and name it bitcoin but it's all about how the people will use it.

Hi,

Lets say you have an idea about an altcoin name that fits exactly with the project you have in mind. Is there a way to "reserve" the name so that you can show precedence ? Is there something like an "altcoin name registration process" ?

Thanks to all !
I think that there is no altcoin name registration process, as long as your ticker will be still available in the market and you will be free to use it as your own ticker for your coin. that means if you must try to check out all ot the ticker that already used by another project in the coinmarketcap.

There's no such thing.  It's like a first come first serve thing.  Go on coinmarketcap.com  search for the name and ticker of the coin you plan to create.  If it's not taken, then just go for it.  You don't want to use a ticker that is already taken, there will be major confusion when people start trading on exchanges.

If this rule is unwritten - sure there's going to be someone who will violate it some day soon.

You can't actually create a rule for this. Rules have to be enforced by an individual or an organization.
And who's gonna do that in the crypto world ? Yup it's decentralized. \

So, basically no you can't do anything about it. Theoretically, someone CAN actually create a new coin and call it the same name of an old coin but what would be the use of that ?

It won't get listed on anything. No exchanges, nothing. Not even Coinmarketcap. So, it's not gonna work whatsoever.
This is one of the things that don't happen because they can't.

yeah, that's why there are Bitcoin gold, Bitcoincash, Bitcoinforkids and BitcoinWhatever ?

And it contradicts your statement in a way, this is simple - you take 1 name + extra words, they're confusing hell of a lot, don't you think so?

It's more like an unwritten rule that you don't use any tickers that are taken unless the coin has been long long dead.

So, not as a try to jump onto any conclusion, but as my understanding from what I have read here.

There is no AltCoin Registration means centralized as the Society needs none atm. No software development kit for that and when it's needed it's sure to appear.

Please correct me if I'm wrong here?
Thanks

there's none, I think you can just register a domain name. And hopefully the certain interested party doing a project relative to the name you have registered buy it from you. However, I do discourage this, hoarding names. It's almost like a patent troll, you can't use something unless you pay/buy the rights from the first registered curator of that IP. It's a fucking cheap shot for monopoly and does not really contribute to the ecosystem of innovation. But there's some IP that really needs protection though.

Thank you all for your answers, Its crystal clear. Maybe that's an idea for a new business, as blockchains are being used more and more to guarantee intelectual property, why not business name registration ?

There's no way to reserve / preserve that alt coin name that came from your idea and fits the upcoming projects in the future. We don't have a registry of alt coin where people who wants to start out their alt coin projects / tokens are registered and can't be duplicated. Look at bitcoin, there's bitcoin cash, bitcoin gold, bitcoin unlimited and so on, also the same as applicable with Ethereum. To solve this thing, try to be the first to take that name.

i imagine with the ethereum upgrade coming and that extension like .eth or some can be used for token name registration as well as contract registration. This may still only works for ethereum tokens not all the alts

No there is not. Since Every cryptocurrency has its own platform and is decentralized every one can create a coin with any name desired.

The entire idea of crytpo is decentralization so no there isn't a registration process to reserve names.  If we did, we wouldn't have eBTC, eLTC, etc.  If you're serious, it'd be useful to buy up domain registrations so that when you do launch your coin you at least have the website names, emails, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Hehe, that's a real problem. I noticed coins take their names from the project, and I find it hard to believe two projects could be built by different teams, treating identical ideas. But problem could arise anyway...

This is a great question I also had on my mind. Is googling them all the ONLY possible option? Thank you.
