Well, the advantages depend on the particular coin. Some of the alts offer different features Bitcoin not has, like complete transaction anonymity or features like asset issuance etc. I recommend to do research on your own for some intersting alts.

or better yet do research on signature campaigns (he'd probably make more money posting here than investing in Altcoins)
hmm why did i think to post that ? hmmmmmm ?

There aee now literally hundreds of altcoins some are dead and there are some that are offering something that bitcoin does not.  Proof of stake is one feature which most of the coins bave whereby you earn interest by keeping the coins in your wallet.

If you spend some time in the altcoin ann area you will be able to delve deeper into each coin.  To filter out the rubbish you could checkout coinmarketcap.com and see which coins have decent volume and from there you can click through for more information.

Litecoin comes to mind as it is the little brother of bitcoin and tends to follow bitcoin.

I believe in total its over 2,000

What altcoins are worth investing in or looking into if any?

What are the advantages of altcoins (if any) vs bitcoins?

Altcoins are the best way to tryout new ideas to further push the innovation.
Bitcoin is the most well-known and established crypto coin, so it has a main focus on stability to preserve the investment value and status-quo.

If you like to push the development of new ideas you're welcome to pick you're favorite altcoin(s) and support the project(s) with your possibilities.

ever heard of test net ?

why do noobs have to loss money so shady name-changing ponzi-token pushers can make buck ?

The ONLY thing in short supply here is honesty and reality..

This.

OP, if you want to play around with alts be aware that these price movements are based around hype and P&D's from active traders.

i'd have to say it revolves around adoption and does an Altcoin have potential to actually take over the world (like BTC did)
And of course you will get a different answer depending on who you talk to..

I agree.  But as you said 99.9% of alts are not and will not be widely adopted and have no chance or potential to take over.

So price movement all goes back to hype and P&D'ing the coin...  Kinda like penny stocks.  Most of those companies have no earnings, but the stock is being hyped and manipulated from time to time.

Investing - think major alts that did something different and were the first to do so.

ppc? nxt? first multi algo coins. Were those things advantages? only the future will tell.

Blockchains may well be the next big thing. Then perhaps collectors of the first blockchain currencies may arrive on the scene.

Also you do have some coins that bring things bitcoin is not doing right now. These could or could not gather large followings and could become valuable. A lot of alts launched by zero post devs who premined or instamined then dumped out to rinse and repeat are dead now.

For now i wouldn't even consider looking at alts if you don't have already some BTC.

After that there will be alts that bring HUGE returns compared to bitcoin right now but spotting them could be difficult.

LTC and Doge i like since both are rather old and famous now. Hopefully they will do well anyway but also i think any future collectors of old blockchain currencies will always want a few of those in their portfolio.

I would have like to have been around to mine up some of the real old old alts and keep in cold storage.

So i would say mostly BTC then some of the big alts that you like the look of ,then some small amounts say 10% porfolio on some older famous wave 1 alts to hold on to.

Currently, I would invest only into Bitcoins but if you want to invest longterm then invest into Counterparty, NXT, NEM or Qora.

nada, zip, zero..

a currency has to be used to be called a currency and no altcoin comes even remotely close to the user base as Bitcoin
so they are ALL utterly useless crap.. period.

and not only that the entire altcoin scene has been dying for years now and there is almost nobody left interested in this crap.
why ? because they are scammy IPO ponzi schemes 99.99% of the time !

if your looking for a currency ? keep looking.

if your simply looking for a digital ponzi scheme token to invest in to turn a Bitcoin profit (to cash out to fiat)
then welcome aboard.. enjoy your scammy clone coin stay LOL

and these guys here will bullshit you fast and hard about Altcoins having some bright future etc.
But it's crock of shit.. a farce !
the reality is none of these guys are lifting a finger to get real world adoption happening.
and if they are actually trying they have accomplished nothing what so ever in the last few years since this crap began.

The ONLY thing in short supply here is honesty and reality.. these guys still loitering around here are deceitful and / or delusional.
Almost all of them poor suckers who didn't bail out long ago when *most people did..
The last batch of losers stuck "holding the bag"
So they are trapped.. they need to find a victim.. so they can at least try and break even *if they are lucky.
