I think many will make it mainstream and will be like lots and lots of small ecosystems. Aside from a few Alts, most are super tiny and not even guaranteed survival, most people assume an alt can even die which it can't as long as there is someone there supporting it.

I think the biggest progress would come from Alts collaborating with each other except most try to just step on each other, clawing for more userspace.

Probably the coin that will be mainstream has not been invented yet, but Bitcoin and today's altcoins are introducing the technology.

I think Bitcoin and a few community "niche" coins will make it big, like Doge, AppleByte, Gulden and one of the anon coins. The rest will die from lack of a real user community outside these forums.
I think there are still a lot of other promising coins, which have the real user community as you mentioned, such as NXT, ETHEREUM, Bitshares etc

I think the topic is asking the question that everyone has: will cryptocurrency in general ever make it to the level of fiat currency, or even come close?

Obviously it is recognized globally to some degree... But for it to 'break out' of the shell of its infancy, well that is going to take some time. Development is a critical period, and short of some key exposure and implementation events, even a technically secure network design that can be truly called secure and/or anonymous, that coin may never catch on.

The more this scene get oversaturated with clones, copy&paste, scams and fails,  the less chance it will have a real impact in mainstream.

nice signature  Cheesy

but that's not really true, bitcoin is still the first word people hear. i think all crypto has a chance so long as they take care of themselves. just because penny stocks exist doesn't stop the NYSE.

What are the odds?
Altcoins or Bitcoin really become big?

100%. For the same reasons the Internet and BitTorrent continue growing.

The general consumer is always the last to adopt new technology. We are just the first adopters ... the early players in the game. When the altcoin winners go mainsteam, the new marketcaps will make the 2013 price spikes pale by comparison.
