On this same note... does anyone have an alternative for REDPHONE? That app was about to bring encrypted phone calls to the masses before it was bought out and shut off by twitter. Even the source code would help.

Textsecure is a fantastic encrypted text messaging app you can find it in the market still.

Using linux is an option. It's all open source and the full disk encryption installations are quite easy. (maybe depending on your knowledge)

why do you want an alternative seeing as whispersys source is released? what potential benefits do you see in others such that whispersys drawbacks if any aren't present?

there are a number of examples of encrypted systems and their drawbacks on modaco.com
