The new electrum version 2.x may not support importing private keys. You can dump private keys from core and import to online wallets like blockchain.info wallet. Then send the coins to your electrum address. The safest way for a newbie is to wait for core to finish download and send coins to electrum.

Dude, Just relax please.
You don't need to delete anything. It's downloading only new blocks. Just wait till it's syncronized to the network.

If you don't want to wait, Start to use a "non full node" wallet such as Electrum. (But you need to sync your core wallet to access funds and transfer it to Electrum).
Or you can dump private keys from core wallet and import them into Electrum.

Are you sure it is downloading all blocks from the beginning again? Cos bitcoin core does need to download all the blocks created since the last time you close the app. There is an average of 144 blocks created every 24 hours.
