I won't lie, when I was new to cryptocurrencies and didn't know much about it, coinmarketcap was the first website I visit if I needed some information about a coin or a token such ad its official website or on which exchanges it's listed. I used to use blockchain.info as my main wallet too!

But it didn't take me long to realize that they are not that reliable and there are better alternatives especially after their stupid April fools' prank when they listed a fake token (toilet paper) as #1 which got exploited by some scam exchanges and resulted in many users losing their money. I don't think I ever visited their website since they got acquired by binance.

Need PR/CMC & CG? TG @The_Cryptovator
Guys, you are judging either CMC good or bad. It's doesn't matter how bad are they. But the project link won't be fake there. At least during the listing process project does not provide fake links. So to avoid phishing links could follow CMC or CG. But not to choose a coin from there for trading or investment. CMC & CG manipulate many things and projects manipulate volume. So be careful, don't use them except finding the right links.

That would be great start to find out a lot of information about a project but that's not the best place as coinmarketcap is biased in a lot of factors; so does coingecko. In fact, most of the tracking sites are such biased. We have seen issue between ranking coins from both coinmarketcap and coingecko.
Now that Binance acquired CMC, it's more subjected to get manipulated. I guess you got what I meant.

It is better than nothing, but most of the currencies hosted on commarketcap do not mean that they are good for investment, as they may be scam projects despite being valid links.
  • CMC is owned by Binance and they can pump scam coins
  • they take some time to update Contract address/scam reports
It is better to use Coingecko (Free) because it gives much better listing standards.

Do you know that coinmarketcap is the right platform for newbies to start their crypto picking journey? Coinmarketcap has the right information, links and channel, I'm saying this is one of the best ways to avoid fake links to fake tokens with fake smart contract address, Coinmarketcap have the right information you seek for.
What exactly do you think newbie should pick on CMC website if not some of many thousands worthless shitcoins.
First thing for anyone who is interested in crypto is to learn more about Bitcoin, importance of decentralizations and difference between Bitcoin and altcoins.
Reading few pages of Bitcoin whitepaper would be best thing you could do and there is zero chance of getting scammed like this.
For anyone interested in gambling with altcoins I would recommend using Coingecko website instead of coinmarketcap sponsored by binance.

Do you know that coinmarketcap is the right platform for newbies to start their crypto picking journey?

No, it is not.
Coinmarketcap has a lot of misleading information, it does a pretty bad job at taking reports about scams, it doesn't delist some coins even if the news is all about problems, their alert is just one tiny line of text that is minuscule compared to the ads about buying the same shitcoin, it easily lists shitty exchanges with clearly inflated volume as they don't care about it till you threaten binance position with it.

This added to the fact that they have knowingly taken money to slit coins and exchanges without even checking and they run scammer ads than google does which is really something that makes it a really bad place to start.
Highly likely a newbie will get tricked into buying some shitcoin that will go do zero is a week or become untradable as they always push on top of the age shitcoins that are using pumps and dumps to be there.

Coinmarketcap have the right information you seek for.

Clearly!

The advice is not actually true for all cases.

First, the best place is an official website of a project
Second, Coinmarketcap or Coingecko can be gold standard but they are third party sites and you know in some cases, information on CMC or CG are outdated.
Third, nowadays Coingecko is more quickly in terms of information update. Coinmarketcap is very low responsive to support ticket.

So if in the past, we considered Coinmarketcap as a gold standard, now it should be changed to Coingecko.

Aside from it you can even use also coingecko. Actually both of these platform are good for monitoring new and old projects. From official website, social site, and any other links related to project are gonna be seen here. Its qyite helpful to avoid such info that arent coming from the team cause there are lots of scammers will feed you scam links.

Don't trust anyone completely, CMC is reputed cointracking and cryptocurrency related source website but they may promote anything for money what if a scammer decided to steal billion by spending million to make everyone to think that it is a potential project. Always refer multiple sources but analyse everything on your own which will reduce loss for you.
CMC is a service that provides all information about cryptocurrencies including prices, markets, project details, and more. CMC is not financial advice as all price movements are recorded on all CEX and DEX markets in real time. CMC helps with coin/token price analysis based on movement patterns and regular news updates. I hope someone understands the CMC FAQ as it has predefined listing criteria requirements, so not all coins that are already listed are eligible to be added to the portfolio.

Why are you listing [insert random cryptocurrency]? It's clearly a scam!

Nearly every cryptocurrency has been called a scam at some point in its lifetime. We're not here to judge the merits of any cryptocurrency, but we provide the best tools for you to make your own conclusions. As long as it meets the listing criteria, it's eligible to be on the site.

There's no difference between Coingecko, CMC, or other coin listing site, they will list any coins as long as the project can fill the requirements.
That's not entirely true; CMC is way more hype oriented therefore more dangerous for less experienced people. One of the first things you see when you visit CMC are the currently trending coins/tokens and biggest gainers and the problem with that is that you will most likely find pump & dump shitcoins mentioned there and not legit projects. There are even services that charge ~$50K to make a project appear trending, all for the purpose of luring newbies into investing.

While some newbie might come for the links only, he will probably end up getting distracted by all that hype-oriented info (add on that promotion of scam betting sites like 1xbit) which will inevitably make him loose money.

Scam projects can use any website they want and not just use CMC, Coingecko or any other website.
It will be our job to always look for additional information about the project we are looking for so.
Hopefully, we can avoid fake links from scam projects.
You don't need to visit threads from CMC or Coingecko or any other website, especially if you find anything wrong with the project.
The scam project itself will try to promote its website on many sites to attract many people who will participate in the project and only people who can get more information will be able to survive.

[Nope]No hype delivers more than hope

Coinmarketcap have the right information you seek for.
Until you know this [List][Rugpull Warning] Unsellable CMC listed Shittokens. CMC is littered with too many shittokens listing queues. Their audits are increasingly lax and don't care if what they list is actually stealing people's money. Scam alerts will only be made when they receive reports (a lot), meaning wait for the victim first.

Many people missed the point of the @OP post, @OP is giving guide to avoid phishing link by using the link provided on CMC not the way how to choose projects. There's no difference between Coingecko, CMC, or other coin listing site, they will list any coins as long as the project can fill the requirements. In my experience, I never saw phishing link listed on CMC and Coingecko.

CMC can be a good source for a lot of information about different crypto projects but, it will be wise to also check the data available with its competitor Coingecko. I generally prefer using the latter as it is now controlled by an exchange or a cryptocurrency project. Another good source where you can check information related to blockchain games and NFT is dapp radar.

Coingecko will take over coinmarketcap soon, they are more serious with what they do than coinmarketcap, I respect the binance team so much and I heard they are in charge of coinmarketcap too but they allow shit tokens and scam coins to be listed on their platform, it shows that they don't care....my advise is do your own research.

Coinmarketcap have the right information you seek for.

Coinmarketcap may have the right information you are looking for but CMC is definitely not the only platform with such information. The CMC is a commercial service owned by Binance exchange, which means that most of the information and promotions that are published by the company are aimed their profit-making ambitions. This sometimes makes them appear to provide less useful or credible information. This is one of the reasons why we usually suggest users to look for information on other channels and from different sources, such as Coingecko, as well.

Not Your Keys, Not Your Bitcoin
I will take Coinmarketcap as NO and preferably Coingecko as an alternative. Apart from the learning tab and Ico events that I do browse sometimes, everything about them changed ever since they sold it to Binance and now there is a current section they now enable for everyone called Live X chat ( X= the name of the project tab you are on), that chat has invited many scammers and shills posters to a market cap that is supposed to allow anyone views the necessary information needed become a messy place.

This is for bitcoin view and it looks cool until you search for altcoins. I think they are trying to make the platform live but it is not necessary for a market cap to have this even when they claimed comments are moderated in their community rules.[1]

You mean the platform that promotes scams like 1xbit, is controlled by Binance, and in which you can pay for your altcoins to end up as one of the trending ones? While CMC used to be even worse before Binance took them over, that still doesn't mean that they are good choice. I would advise newbies to avoid them as they are too focused on the hype aspect and use Coingecko instead.

Best place for all of that are projects website and you shouldn't rely on 3rd party to verify info for you.
