If you can't trust ICO ratings, then what can you trust?

Here's another edition of our weekly Basescore blog Smiley
https://medium.com/basescore/if-you-cant-trust-ico-ratings-what-can-you-trust-30901fc6cc61

When the ICO market exploded in 2017 it was promptly following by the emergence of dozens of ICO rating agencies — but to what extent should they be relied on when making investment decisions?

With the rise of ICOs also came the rise of the ‘ICO economy’, which refers to the economic activity that has sprung out of the boom in initial coin offerings, which require a range of peripheral services to succeed. Developers, copywriters, digital marketers, social media managers, PR agencies, lawyers, strategic advisors, media outlets, and ICO rating agencies are all participants in the ICO economy, and everyone is benefiting.

But then, of course, came the bad players looking to ruin it for everyone... Enjoy!

“Security Tokens Ruin Decentralization”, Says No One Ever

We now understand that most utility tokens are essential for protocols and their purpose in providing a role into their ecosystem to entice users in providing resources into it. With the introduction of Security Tokens, how will this affect Basescore and our current due diligence strategy? First off, we can take the token metric out of it and look at companies similar to a true venture capitalist.

Our platform is built for due diligence. Read our blog today at: https://medium.com/basescore/security-tokens-ruin-decentralization-says-no-one-ever-76164e09d9af

New Read!

We've just uploaded a new article on Medium, talking about ICO due diligence and how we can use an ICO's smart contracts to stay on top of their teams. It's a great, technical read, but is an extremely useful tool for keeping track of the good ICOs and separating them from the bad. We hope you'll enjoy!

We wrote a new blog to help users quickly filter out bad ICOs in under 5 minutes Smiley
~Snipped~
Let us know what you think!
Those are great points but you forgot to include the basics:

- Fake team members
  • A "reverse image search" takes less than 5 minutes and you can easily find websites (on google) that offers such services (for free).

- Duplicate/plagiarized content
  • Same as the above line, simply search for "plagiarism check" on google.

Hey @SFR10, we just wanted to let you know that we have added your points into our blog:

I just checked a random upcoming ICO and it appears you have two reviews from the same source (one of them leads to another ICO with a similar name): "This one"

IMO, you should reconsider how "basescores" are given:
- Ratings that fall on the "negative category (54 and under)", should have more weight than the other categories (mixed, good and great).
  • Great x1
  • Good x1
  • Mixed x1.5
  • Negative x2

Thanks for your feedback! We just launched, so there are definitely some bugs that need to be ironed out. Unfortunately, because they are tracking by name, similar named ICOs (but different teams) will appear on the same page. We will need to manually squash those, unfortunately.

Good feedback on the scores - definitely will review with the team!

Hi everyone, thank you for checking out this post. We are very excited to launch our Basescore Platform. We're crypto investors ourselves, and one problem that we constantly had when investing in ICOs was that information is always scattered everywhere.

It's hard to know what's trustworthy and what's not when there are so many scams in the market, especially when a review could easily be bought and paid for - so we decided to create a tool that aggregates reviews from the leading critics, ie. ICO Bench, FoundICO, ICO Rating, etc. that would allow us to see the discrepancy in the numbers.

We average and weigh these scores under one base score that we feel would truly reflect on how these ICOs fare. No bias. And as a plus, you will be able to find information much faster!

If you have any feedback, feature requests or questions, just ask below! We would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

And we're live! Wink Our team is excited to announce the launch of Basescore 1.0 (currently in beta) | https://basescore.co, a new ICO evaluation and rating research platform that aggregates reviews from the leading crypto critics to help investors research the ICOs they love. Call us the "Metacritic of ICOs" Wink

Trust and transparency has always been an issue in cryptocurrency. This corruption was exposed to a large scale recently when it was revealed that Alethena managed to buy fake ratings for their ICO that they had listed on ICO Bench.

There are a countless number of dubious practices and scams in ICOs, and we want to make sure investors get a fuller picture on a project before they decide to dive into their next one with their hard-earned money.

Introducing Basescore
Basescore is our solution to the trust and transparency issue in cryptocurrency. By aggregating over 7,000 review stores from the leading critics in the space, we hope to provide a single, weighted BASE SCORE that serves as a true reflection on how the project actually fares in the space. Basescore aims to take the guesswork out of investing, and provide investors with the knowledge that they need to make an informed decision.

Our goal is to build the world's largest ICO database so that any investor would be able to discover all the information they need on an ICO starting from Basescore.

See the site in action yourself here: https://basescore.co
