Really interesting project, I am familiar with Truebit and I see that you are bringing a full Linux OS to the table instead.
Could you explain the differences?

Thanks for the great question. Cartesi is quite similar to TrueBit at first glance, but they differ vastly in their design decisions. The first major difference between TrueBit and Cartesi concerns the virtual machine itself; TrueBit’s virtual machine is based on WebAssembly (WASM). WASM is the W3C Community Group’s Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) for efficient web applications, while Cartesi’s virtual machine implements the RISC-V ISA.

TrueBit’s technology focuses on boosting the computational power for smart contracts, which operate under a bare bones runtime environment. However, as we said earlier the applications that we use on the Web or our devices  don't  exist in isolation as they stand on an operating system and many software layers. Our architectural choice enables Cartesi computations to run on a proper operating system. In this environment, much more powerful decentralized applications can be developed.

It would be nice if you could just highlight 2-3 sentences in layman's terms on what Cartesi is actually trying to solve. So far, as a non developer, I see or feel nothing about this project.

There's a new ANN that's currently going to be released within the next 1-3 days from now. It will help paint, express and layout information around Cartesi in a less opaque fashion.

Yesterday, Erick de Moura (CEO of Cartesi) did a podcast with Crypto Current. He discussed why Intensive computations performed off-chain is a big deal in blockchain.

This dumb face is unusually delicate and fine for a male specimen. I can not possibly gauge the impact the gamma radiation caused to this face but it could be in the order of 5.5 megaelecton volts. With a wavelength as small as of 10^-13 m, this kind of radiation can reduce a normal human face to what we see above.

something like Truebit but seems more effective, don't know which one is better yet~

Have spent almost 1 hour to read the article on Medium, it's a little difficult for me since it's not my first language, very nice written and got a lot of useful info from it Smiley

Cartesi Team Update: Finally a Real OS for Blockchains

Our team of serial entrepreneurs and leading Ph.D. researchers in computer science, probability, and distributed computing have joined forces to solve two of the biggest roadblocks in the mass adoption of blockchain — network efficiency and difficulty in coding.

To tackle these problems, we have designed the first second-layer system able to run a real operating system on top of blockchain. Cartesi brings all the tools and capabilities available in modern operating systems to the decentralized web. It is a real and fully-fledged Linux OS that skyrockets the capabilities of decentralized applications without compromising on the security guarantees of blockchain.

A fully fledged linux OS means a derivative like debian-like?  Upon reading it doesn't really feel like it is a real operating system to me but a platform where the dapps can run.  But you really have good people on your team, I heard of those names before, this could be one of the project that will emerge by 2020 with less possibility of a scam. But we will see since you are about to do an IEO.

I'm going to have to comment so I can subscribe to this thread and see what will happen.

Cartesi's off-chain layer will allow external parties to build upon whichever Linux OS is preferred. The principal idea is that individuals can work familiar software and code and gain the benefits of blockchain, specifically in the DApp region.

Thank you, this ANN may ultimately be reposted and we'll denote that in this thread. We're currently underway with a more formal design and presentation.

A project that is awaited by many people, I have seen how enthusiastic the members of this cartesi project are in their telegram community, I am very confident that a project with a Linux technology concept like this will be very easily accepted by the world community, especially investors today, and I am a bounty hunter can't wait to join the bounty cartesi, which is planned to be handle by one of the trusted managers, Bubbalex.

with the mentioned industries that you can cater your services, have you presented your platform to at least couple of them to check the viability of your system? or your partnership with those companies is already a testimony that they are trusting your technology in doing business with you?

Yes, Cartesi is ultimately being integrated and developed upon by external business and strategic relation partners. The viability of Cartesi as a whole, from the integrity of the systems built, to being applicable to real-use-case scenarios will be discussed heavily in an upcoming AMA with our Senior advisor:  Serguei Popov, Co-Founder of IOTA.

We also have an upcoming Dapp game to display the capabilities of Cartesi and showcase our tech to everyone (external source: https://medium.com/cartesi/how-to-make-more-impressive-decentralized-games-120636cb5712) This is one major use-case we're highlighting.

A Layer-2 Linux Blockchain Infrastructure for Scalable DApps.

We wanted to open up a formal discussions thread around Cartesi. Ultimately, what we've been making for the past year and a half in building a Layer-2 Linux infrastructure built on Blockchain. Achieving a high-scalability future of DApps, smart contract portability across chains and ease-of-access development on Linux, for the future of DeFi and Decentralized Applications.

this is so weird, you just popped up like 2 months ago with this ETH wannabee, who are you, where did you come from?
no public members on your github, and very low work on there anyways, kinda just feels like a eth wannabee
i wish you guys would just work together, but somehow i feel like theres a reason your not working with ETH, maybe they see thru your skills (or lack of?)
either way, ya no thanks

Hey CJM, I'm part of the new marketing team that Cartesi is in the process of creating. So some of your more hardline questions in regards to development, will be passed to the team.

Cartesi has been around since early 2018. The project formally started in 2017. Cartesi is a project based out of Singapore and we've been quietly working behind the scenes. We're currently undergoing a more public and community focused oriented display, in order to prep for our objective of launching our mainnet soon.

In regards to the Github, there's a lot of interactions from our devs there and is our public display of what we've been achieving https://github.com/cartesi the team as per professional standards develops everything privately before making releases (there is a notice on each public repo regarding this). Cartesi differs from Ethereum in a variety of ways and some the ideas around ETH's implementation where conceptualized by our team a couple of years ago.

Not a problem, we encourage all critical discussions around Cartesi, if you have any technical question, the team will be more than happy to respond on Telegram: https://t.me/CartesiProject

You can formally view some of the public events we've been too, that were recorded (abeit a bit old, in 2018): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlBbBXY7k50

Hello nice article and very well versed written. Dapp is special form of activity for blockchain users. Many of good projects are now focusing on expanding their DApp forces. Nice explanation and concept of youre project. Can I ask if Cartesi planning to launch any sale or crowdfunding event to collect fund or the team can handle the budget for the development of Cartesi platform?

Thank you. Cartesi is quite unique, since developers will be able to use and understand Linux in developing DApps. This will greatly reduce educational barriers and make the creation of DApps more relevant. We highly recommend joining our Telegram group for all the latest information. We'll announce our funding phases in the near future. Feel free to follow our discussions, we're heading into a new phase at the current time: https://t.me/CartesiProject

Okay thank you looks like Im gonna hang out for a while in youre telegram group to check the utmost discussion youre cooking there. I think if that the case the developers of youre project are highly skilled if using Linux to play with some DApp.

On Linux and Blockchains

Wanted to briefly share one recent article on what separates Cartesi from most other blockchains

DApps should be capable of performing computations like the ones “centralized” applications regularly do. DApp development should have access to the languages, libraries, and tools that are standard in modern operating systems like Linux. Going even further, we should strive for a higher-level infrastructure that is generic and scalable while abstracting away the nuts and bolts of individual blockchains and consensus layers. Developers should be able to focus on their specific DApp logic instead of dealing with the intricacies of state channels, side-chains, and the blockchain itself. DApps should be easily portable across different blockchains.

A Layer-2 Linux Blockchain Infrastructure for Scalable DApps.

We wanted to open up a formal discussions thread around Cartesi, while we prep and ramp up efforts to launch our main-net. Ultimately, what we've been making for the past year and a half in building a Layer-2 Linux infrastructure built on Blockchain. Cartesi is a decentralized and scalable Linux infrastructure that solves the problems of computational scalability and development infrastructure for the decentralized web.

With Cartesi, Blockchain applications can be coded with the vast domain of mainstream software stacks available today. Applications run off-chain, with the strong security guarantees of the blockchain, but free from its computation limits and high costs.
