I've finally added blogs to the site and you can read the first one here: https://thepriceinsats.com/blog/Why-does-price-in-sats-exist

Hopefully, in the coming months/year I can dig deeper into this part of the bitcoin ecosystem.

My next blog will just be a list of useful links to e.g. the whitepaper.

Let me know if you would like me to discuss any topics.

We've added HISTORICAL PRICES!

Going forward it should track the price of items against the price of bitcoin, showing a downward trend in terms of goods. As its been launched today. Its just using todays price against some historical data I pulled.

See more here: https://thepriceinsats.com/historical-prices

I need to do a freedom of information request from tesco to give me the previous prices of the 10 items over the last year. Hopefully they will play ball.

The mole is moving forward.

Thanks for your support.

I would recommend a different web crawling method, if you're getting flagged for scraping then you might have to change up how it works, are you using a headless browser with a user-agent or are you just reading html? Without disclosing exactly how it works would you be able to identify why it got you flagged?

Thanks for the input, one of the issues was how often we scraped, initially, it was set at 30minute intervals to ensure the price was recent, then I changed it to once a day. Still, I think it was too often and therefore they band us (probably just an automatic WAF rule) through resource utilisation - after all, we try and collect data on over 7k items. So we had to change the schedule to weekly and we are going to add a couple of rules, which should have been in place.  Check first then update.

We're still here guys & girls.

If any of you have visited the site recently, you might have noticed the lack of items....... Well Tesco blocked our IP address so we couldn't scrape the data anymore.

Anyway, I have written to their innovations team and hopefully, we'll get whitelisted. In the interim, we'll have to perform some magic and rely on older data.

Also, we are working on a historical pricing graph so watch out for that  Cool

Maybe you used to short time interval for fetching data from their website... that could often result in IP getting banned.
You could use multiple addresses for collecting information from Tesco and use longer time intervals to avoid their DDOS detection, if they don't allow whitelisting.

Hey!

I scanned your website for vulnerabilities and it checked out great! There is only one problem, your Strict-Transport-Security header is either non-existent or not working, if this is intentional, great! If its not, here is some documentation to help (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Headers/Strict-Transport-Security)

Boom! Thanks for the tip and documentation.  Cool

Oddly enough I thought today that it's a good way of tracking deflation because I have the historical prices of items like Lucky charms on March 3rd cost 4,073 $SATs now they only cost 3,237 and Illy Coffee Beans, on March 27th they cost 16,783 $SATs and now they are 14,027 SATs.

Printers go Brrrrrrr

This graph shows how many sats you can buy with one USD over time

I like your idea a lot. You have created a great website. Although there are some minor flaws in the website you can fix them later. I hope you make the website a little more interesting.

Thanks for the thumbs up, there are always improvements I want to do and areas I want to focus on. Feel free to list some things you would like to see improved. Community feedback is always welcomed and hopefully, you'll support the site and idea.

I've added the localisation feature which means that if you access from 10 jurisdictions, you will see your currency. It works ok, could be better and I needed to refresh a couple of times to clear out the cookies.

I am also going to add the Bitcoin BTC Whitepaper on my thank you's list at the bottom because well, everyone should at least read it once.

Not sure if you would eventually do this, but a proper localisation would include a different set of items for different countries.

If you have never seen the brand or item, then you don't get any benefit of seeing the price in sats.

I have been looking at stores across the oceans, that we could scrape similar to the operation with Tesco.

But I hadn't thought about localisation and showing particular items based on location, thanks for the Input

I've added a few more currencies, hopefully, once the IP localisation is done people who visit the site will see their currency.

Added: AUD, CAD, CHF, HKD & NZD (That gives 10 currencies in total)

A small update but I think an important one, you can now enter a number of SATs and get back the FIAT figure in 5 currencies. (Planning to be 10 soon)

With the increase in speed and hopefully this little change, usability is increasing.

To thepriceinsats I wish good luck with the project, looks very nice and I hope to see more products added, very cool that it's not just fixed fiat amounts converted to BTC!

Thank you - been beavering away this week (is there a similar analogy for a mole??) to fix the performance issue. Some site re-structuring had to be done and then I'm moving on to updating the calculators to be able to do a reverse calculation and then localisations - with a few more currencies.

Please let me know, what currencies you wish to see. Currently, we have GBP, USD, EUR, JPY and CNY but as the Chinese love to ban crypto, maybe I'll remove the CNY........

No, I wouldn't punish people like that.

This is a good idea, specially to make sats more common.

A couple of comments:

You're usually showing a different amount (1 sat less in BTC price), probably because of some rounding error. Sats price should be exactly 100,000,000 times the BTC price.

Example from website:

Quote
0.00012955 BTC    12956 SATs

Also, in my opinion, SATs should be either sats or Sats, since it's short for Satoshis. BTC(or XBT) is the currency code used to represent bitcoin, there's no SAT currency code.

Just added 5,000 more items to the database, so now we have over 6,000 searchable items on the site!
AFAICR, the load time on your website wasn't that bad but after the update, it's taking around 16 to 17 seconds to load: Video link
- I'm not sure if it's directly related to the number of items you've recently added or something else is causing it [there might be a high load on the server (you might want to check if you're hitting any limits with your current hosting plan)].

Useful to know, I thought it was a little slow earlier today but I tried it again and it went fast, let me look into that!

To give everyone a quick update.

Just added 5,000 more items to the database, so now we have over 6,000 searchable items on the site!  It was one of the biggest feedbacks that we were missing either essential items or variants. I also noticed myself when posting on twitter (https://twitter.com/in_sats) that some everyday items were missing.

What were working on

  • localisation based on IP for currency and language
  • reverse calculation for the SATs calc (enter SAT figure get currency
  • identifying new product sources in Asia and USA

If anyone wants to follow a mole https://twitter.com/in_sats

I mean, the Twitter account could quite surely be setup to post automatically via a bot, e.g. daily a random item priced in sats Smiley
Less work for you and more frequent updates Wink

You know I had thought about that but each day I choose an item, create the image on photoshop and then come up with a message. That is why it looks good each time and generally, the message is fun, not just [ITEM] at [PRICE] [LINK]

I just need more arms or even better MORE MOLES!

@thepriceinsats
It looks like you've gained only a small amount of followers since you posted "this" back in March; perhaps you should consider trying paid promotions on various platforms [start with small amounts and see which one works best].

  • If you expand your listings to other reliable platforms, I'll create an avatar and promote your website [for free] for a month or two [depending on my mood, I might extend it].
    - Send me a PM when you've added items from other platforms Wink
  • Just found out Tesco doesn't offer referral links for its products [you might want to look for a platform that does offer such things].
  • Bought you a coffee [hopefully, it makes you feel more motivated to do the updates/changes faster] Wink

Perhaps he/she made that comment while using one of those websites that always tend to overestimate fees [e.g. here's one].

Thanks for your kind comments and yes, I'm planning to add more items as I go. I certainly need more staples like beef, tooth paste, milk, etc

My next job is a little localisation. So if you access from the US - you see dollar prices, if you access from Japan you get Japanese Yen, etc. Makes the site a little more  global.
That sounds great! We recently had a discussion whether Bitcoin can be used without USD (I think it can) and a site like this can help have a feel how much e.g. 10Ksat are worth without actually converting to USD / EUR / CYN etc all the time, instead directly connect Bitcoin / Satoshi price with actual goods  Cheesy

Good idea but you need to include in the price the actual cost of the bitcoin transaction fee.
For example:
If I want to buy Coca Cola 1 Litre then I will pay £ 1.45 OR, as a minimum, 3872 SATs (the Coca Cola price) + 441496 SATs (the small fee for bitcoin miners)

Quote
The cost of mediation increases transaction costs, limiting the minimum practical transaction size and cutting off the possibility for small casual transactions
(Hi, satoshi!)

Huh?  Huh Where did you get those 400kSat fees from? At the moment (block height 698294) a fee of 1Sat/vB is totally fine, with transaction sizes of ~200vB it means it costs roughly 200 satoshi to send on chain transactions, a mere 0.09€, which is negligible even when just buying a single bottle of Coca Cola (also a bad example, most online transactions are much larger, e.g. due to shipping costs).

Also, in a future where we can order e.g. on Amazon with Bitcoin, the payment will be off-chain in a Lightning channel that connects the users to Amazon LN node directly or indirectly. So even less fees.

To thepriceinsats I wish good luck with the project, looks very nice and I hope to see more products added, very cool that it's not just fixed fiat amounts converted to BTC!

Your website seemed simple to understand and easy to use while also being informative for new users who might not understand what a satoshi is or how it related to Bitcoin (besides it's now famous creator).  I appreciate your effort.  It's great to see new websites pop up that offer insight into Bitcoin.  Good luck with future development and thanks for posting here to let people know what you're working on.  I look forward to seeing more updates as time passes.

Thanks, I appreciate the support. I need to get more items listed and work a bit more on location-based dynamic data. Currently its GBP default.

I actually like the sats idea...it however can be boring sometimes or abit difficult to represent large amount of bitcoin in Sats... so I wonder how nice it would be to price in Sats but allow btc when the numbers become too long to write, like simply writing 10btc instead of 1 000 000 000 sats. The later also means less data, esp in digital world.

I hadn't honestly thought about large numbers, only low-value items to get people using $SATs for everyday items. But I guess, if $BTC BTC was to be the currency of tomorrow, then we do need ways of displaying large figures easily when purchasing a house for instance (or moon base / Lamborghini)

I like the idea! Are you gone expand the data from other markets like electronics devices? Or is your main focus on food?

The idea is to have a basket of goods and that would include electronics, for now time and costs permitting, I have focused on one large retailer who covers a large selection of items, but the hope is to include many providers.

1. BTCitcoin logo (left) vs bitcoincash logo (right)
2. No pizza on the right-side
3. Empty sushi slice on the right-side
4. Laser eye on the right-side
5. Missing mustache [left part] on the right-side
6. Black dot on the right BTCitcoin logo
7. Missing foot on the right-side

Your workaround for "NaN" worked but it still took me a few refreshes to get those stats to display normally.
[/quote]

Congratulations, you got all 7! - hopefully, that gave you 5 minutes away from the price  Wink

(The black dot (6) was a very small mole)

Whilst the NaN show far less often, now I have a small issue with calling the items, in some cases I'm getting them all and in other cases I get 80 or so. This is based on the logic of show only items that have received a price. I think for now, I just need to add a lot more items, get over 1,000 so people can search and find things.

Just an update:

Added/Fixed:

  • We had some further issues with pricing (NaN) - made a few minor changes
  • Added BTC BTC preloader
  • Some general optimisations and seo work (A Rated)

Working On

  • Dark Mode for the site

Ideas

  • A widget with the ability to scan an item and see the price in sats - this has moved on a little and some preliminary ideas about currencies and how it could work
  • Integration of shopping sites & items that accept BTC as payment - expected to be subpage with list (A-Z)
  • Consider the fee it costs to do the transactions - Maybe a show with fees feature

Very nice! Awesome site and we definitely need more like this as adoption grows. Love the idea it shows everyday items in Sats!

We have some similar sites Slicesforsats.org (Which we use at our Pizzeria) and http://satoshicalc.org (Which I am still building)

Must admit, I enjoyed the Pizza Slicer page, quite cool that I could edit and it is one of bitcoins most historical moments - I am sure it will be in museum displays someday!

What did you think of the twitter post? I am doing a different item daily, but no traction as yet  Sad - perseverance is the name of the game, hopefully I'll get a follower soon.... https://twitter.com/in_sats

Awesome, thanks!  Grin

Yes, this is a good idea to do the tweets, good to look back on and see the history and it is great that is it every day items! We followed you from the @CoinFestUK twitter and a few RTs.

Keep up the awesome work!

Hello, World!

With the price increasing and Bitcoin in the mainstream media, I dug out an old app idea and launched 'The Price In Sats (thepriceinsats.com)' - certainly not a new concept but I hope the website and the use of pricing everyday items in Sats will give people a usable gauge for how much something costs like a bottle of coke, steak or even a pizza.

It's a quick app and needs tonnes of more items, but I hope you'll check it out.

Update - Fixes

Thanks for the comments so far, just a quick update with a few fixes and suggestions embedded

  • Done some changes to the API for the SATs pricing. It seems to be better and I am no longer getting NaN
  • Added the randomizing of items on the list to give a unique view each visit, stops you from seeing Coke and Bread each time.
  • Added a dropdown menu above the Sats Shopping List to allow users to select a Fiat currency of the items to make it localised

Thats it for now, I've also begun promoting the prices on Twitter, example below:

Room for improvement
I don't have the capabilities to do this one but I think your website/tool is more useful to become a browser extension where users will just turn it on and use the cursor to hover at the prices and let your tool calculate the value in sats/Bitcoin. For people who are into e-commerce websites and maybe resellers they might find this as a useful and more efficient tool compared to a website.

Thanks for your comments and what you liked, I am trying to aim the website at new or early users of bitcoin, so it is good that you find it suitable for Newbies. Hopefully, by tomorrow or Thursday, I will have resolved my issue regarding NaN pricing. I have opted to store the last refreshed price in the database, this should ensure that regardless if a price is fetched from CoinGecko or not, the user will be served a price. As well, they allow 100 requests a minute which is generous for free. I noted a couple of others limited it to 10,000 a month and then charges.

Noted your 'Room for Improvement' - It seems a useful tool to have a browser extension, i'll need to look into it.

If you do get a NaN, just refresh the page and you should get the pricing. It might be better for me to store the pricing in the DB and on serving if a live price isn't available I could serve the last copy.

Good thing I saw your post before I reported that the pricing is not shown properly in the website however it did took me around 7 refreshes for the prices in your website to fully update.

Things that I like about your website
-It still shows the Bitcoin (in decimal) value together with the fiat and sat value which I truly appreciate since I am more used to this kind of valuation for Bitcoin
-If ever Satoshis will be more popular way of counting Bitcoin then your website will be the pioneer tool for it
-Another plus is you explained what Satoshis are which will make it easier for newbies to learn it

Just an update:

Added/Fixed:

  • Added a lot of new items to give greater searchability
  • When an item returns a zero price from Tesco, it is removed from the list so there are no gaps
  • Fixed SAT currency issue that went into decimal places when whole BTC entered
  • Fixed decimal issue with GBP (was dropping the zero)
  • Some general optimisations and seo work

Working On

  • Change of API - Reading Binance, Kraken, CoinBase - might store price in DB to revert to 'old' if failure
  • Randomizing of items on list to give unique view each visit
  • Currency of items to match the currency on the Calculator

Ideas

  • Dark Mode for the site
  • A widget with the ability to scan an item and see the price in sats (or to autoload on shopping sites)
  • Integration of shopping sites & items that accept BTC as payment
  • Consider the fee it costs to do the transactions - Maybe a show with fees feature

I've also added a Twitter channel, feel free to follow https://twitter.com/in_sats

Thanks to the community for all of the assistance so far  Cool

it only has 50 items so far and it's all from Tesco, so I do need to add a few hundred more items, look at some other sites
Not sure if Tesco offers BTCitcoin payments but if you could only add items from online groceries that offer such payment, then it'll surely improve its overall usage.
- I do know that there are various places that we could buy Tesco gift cards with BTCitcoin, but a direct approach is something else.

You might want to add "categories" when you decide to include more items and maybe even a "dark mode" as well.

Any update with the API? It's still "NaN".
- Is that issue really from CoinGecko's side?

Thanks for all of the suggestions - I did take a look at the API, I wasn't happy with the documentation for Binance. Coinbase seem to be better but we all know of the outages they have. So I might take a look at Kraken as well.

If you do get a NaN, just refresh the page and you should get the pricing. It might be better for me to store the pricing in the DB and on serving if a live price isn't available I could serve the last copy.

Love the Dark mode idea!

Or you referring to the "Sats shopping list"? then yes it's not convert, only in GBP price.

Thanks for the kind words, for now, the shopping list is just quoted in GBP, but it shouldn't be too difficult to get it working with all 5 currencies however it might need another price oracle.

By the way, if anyone wants to see a specific item appear and it can be found on https://www.tesco.com/groceries/ please send me the page URL and i'll get it added. Right now, its just a mixed shopping basket with some of the key influences Steak, Pizza & Sushi. I guess I'll need to add Cake!

Hey! Welcome to the forum!

You are doing a great job and, most importantly, you are sharing it with the community.

Thank you very much, I am looking forward to see your progress.

Great job!
I've seen a bunch sites about convert satoshi to fiat or any currency, but you've include the price on grocery store which is new initiative.

I'd agree with @~DefaultTrust but I don't know how possible it is, because fees is pretty vary on many kind of address format or custodial wallet with the current network.

When I switched to USD and entered an amount it wouldn't convert.
It works on me.

Noted, I'll take a look into that - but could I ask when you entered an amount did you get this response "NaN" - this occurs when the site doesn't get pricing from CoinGecko. As mentioned be Evilish, might need to look at a different source such as an exchange.

I am not sure how reliable CoinGecko API is. Perhaps use an exchange like Coinbase/Gemini/Kraken to get the prices?

Ahh okay that's the problem then. I would use an average of some exchanges then.

Good idea but I think it would be much better if there was some browser extension or script doing this instead of website, so for example if I go to Amazon or Ebay or any other website with prices I could see price in satoshi and/or BTC below or instead dollar price.
This could include all products found on internet and not just limited with Tesco products, and we can do this until everyone adds sats/btc values on their own Wink

Thanks, yes I had a similar comment to have an app that could scan a bar code and give the price in Sats. Who knows Bezos might announce his hand in the coming weeks and Amazon will be priced in Sats by default - global currency!

Oh man, you've done such a neat design job. Great work.

A couple observations.

I am not sure how reliable CoinGecko API is. Perhaps use an exchange like Coinbase/Gemini/Kraken to get the prices?

And would be wonderful if you could add some functionality to show shopping list prices in the currency selected on the Sats calculator. Perhaps not that trivial to do if both the components are isolated? But thought I'd throw the suggestion in.

Hi, welcome to bitcointalk Smiley

While i've seen similar website like this, it's neat idea to obtain actual grocery price (since most website usually hard-coded average price).

Thanks, yeah it only has 50 items so far and it's all from Tesco, so I do need to add a few hundred more items, look at some other sites and currency conversions for localisations but I did want people to start trying to price in items in Sats and get comfortable with the amounts.
