- bitcoin rebase : use latest bitcoin code, or another lib
- some GUIs to register domains, id, etc

I am using Windows XP (sp 3) and when I try nslookup bx.bit I get 178.248.244.15 (if I use curl with the name I get a permanently moved message but if I curl the raw IP I get http://sv05.net-housting.de as a href).
all this is just fine. and "ping bx.bit" still does not work? hmmm

this will look up gee.bit with suffix added directly on your default dns

Thanks - this does work (I already use 8.8.8.8 for my DNS lookup) - but how do I get this to work through a browser?
After you have installed the .reg file try:
nslookup bx.bit
If this gives you an ip address it means that the suffix is installed and you are getting close.
note: nslookup does dns resolution in a different way than the os
If ping bx.bit still does not work it means your os is not using the suffix properly for "everyday" lookups.
It might be necessary to deactivate/activate your internet connection or even do a reboot.
also this might help: ipconfig /flushdns (clears the dns cache, does not hurt)
What OS are you on? I assume you did use the .reg file from here: http://dot-bit.org/How_To_Install_Dns_Suffix ?

I also got someone in Australia to try the Posix method on a box running OpenSUSE but it also will not resolve any .bit addresses.

For me the servers answer with "non-existing domain" just as expected.
that very well could be, I did not look far into it, just assumed it was coming from the DNS servers because I know its easy to fake requests like this
this is a dedicated server at a datacenter in the UK but it still does not surprise me

Hi Ciyam.
If bitviewer has also the problem, either you are using the same dns server and it returns old/bad infos, either you both have cached old/bad infos (in your browser, or in the dns cache for bitviewer).
To be sure, i tested the 4 DNS servers and they all reply the ip address of my server (doing the redirect to www.ciyam.com).
So, wait a bit and it should work everywhere (cached data will be updated after a while).
[edit]I made a mistake when testing (if a domain didn't work, it was redirecting request using suffix on my server, which is working), only 2 servers are resolving ciyam.bit (the first ones), so, the problem should com from there. Need to wait i guess.[/edit]

I am using this method:

with bitviewer.net bx.bit works but ciyam.bit does not - problem with redirection? I guess cablepair will have to investigate this one.

This is great but please note that if you get your site indexed by Google as a proxy then it won't take very long for it to no longer be accessible from China and other countries that put a lot of effort into blocking sites.

tuxavant you got a copy of the code handy? I assume this is done with some kind of combination of php and apache rewrite rules?
I think the simplest way to do this is using a catch-all virtual domain in your apache conf, and then a catch-all rewrite (which could easily be put in the conf too so no need for another file). This would be a directed to a different handler than the normal bitviewer.net (without extra subdomain). Also, the php script would be changed very slightly for how it grabs the target domain.If you wanted an exception for the www subdomain then it can just be placed higher up in the file.
I think the virtual domain lookup is likely faster than processing a rewrite file (which sometimes can have a bit of a performance hit). I'm not sure if placing the rewrite in the conf maybe helps with speed. Probably not a big concern though.
(I can't help further with specifics as it's been years now since I used Apache. Everything is Nginx for me nowadays, which has different configs/rewrites)

I think I mentioned this somewhere else, but it would also be useful to have direct access to your proxy so that individuals could create their own proxy.pac file that redirects *.bit requests directly to you from their browser.

How about a coral cache type of interface where you simply prepend the domain you're trying to reach with the bitviewer.net domain..
Example, to reach wikileaks.bit, you would go to wikileaks.bit.bitviewer.net.

this is great.
once the next foxyproxy version comes out you need to set up a website with the new auto configuration feature (install foxproxy, reload page and click yes --> namecoin support). Setting up the page should be very simple with a template from eric, the foxyproxy developer.

I tried to input several domain names at http://www.bitviewer.net, like http://www.microsoft.bit, http://www.wikileaks.bit etc, but just got the add. You would only be able to access a .bit site if they registered the .bit address. Somehow I doubt microsoft would do that but it's mildly surprising that some other user hasn't already. Two pages to visit:

I'm no expert on this but I believe your next question is "why"? I think the idea is these names cannot be shutdown by any authority.

All we need now is someone to setup a loadbalancer point so every other user with sufficient bandwidth could setup their own .bit proxy and the loadbalancer could, well, balance traffic between the various proxies.
