What is special about add node?

Addnode is a way to give crypto coin wallet a hint, where it can connect to in order to download / update the block chain. With few exceptions, all wallet software has the address of one or more nodes coded permanently into them, so they have a way to do the initial synchronization with the network.

It usually happens at some point, that the nodes permanently coded into the wallet software become unavailable, resulting in the "no block source available" situation. This is when the addnode trick comes to rescue.

Nodes can be added either through the .conf configuration file, or via command line parameters.

For example, to make a newly installed Bitmark wallet aware that it can connect to hashmuch.com to download the block chain, one could either:

1) Start the wallet from command line with the -addnode option: bitmark-qt.exe -addnode=hashmuch.com

       or

2) Create and/or edit bitmark.conf, adding the line "addnode=hashmuch.com" (without the quotes) to the file (and restarting the wallet if it was running while the file was edited).

The lack of functional nodes is a quite common problem for users who hop aboard any specific currency, since if it's been a while since the coin was released, the addresses hard coded into the software may have become unavailable.

This is a pretty serious weak point of all crypto currencies. If the existing users/wallets have no way to find each other, the whole coin can become unstable or unusable. Some wallets have backup procedures such as using the IRC network to get in touch with each other. Many do not have any backup like this, which is why the "please give me a functional addnode" is such a common plea on the forums.
