Maybe your friend doesn't really understand the importance of storing phrases to restore the wallet, I have a pretty good habit when making a new wallet that I write on a piece of paper and I save it well so that one day if my mobile crashes I still have the note to backup it.

Yesterday someone I knew uninstalled his wallet from his android phone mistakenly and he told me to help him recover his wallet but guess what? he did not write out the wallet recovery phrase, the wallet consist of 640$ worth of bitcoin, he was broken, felt pity for him, how can someone not take recovery seed serious? that's what came out of my mouth, Really I felt pity for him because he went through a lot to gather that bitcoin, people need to start taking wallet keys or phrases very serious, newbies should please understand that without these keys you lose your money, time and energy
Sad to hear that this has happened to him. Unfortunately, there is nothing he can do now. Once its lost, its lost forever. There is no way (or unless you can brute force your wallets private key which is also almost impossible or the cost is going to be far far far greater than what you have lost) you can recover those coins anymore. Too bad he didn't make any backup of his wallets. Hope he learnt a lesson from this! At least he is going to be really careful form now on wards when it comes to cryptocurrencies and wallets.

it seems like almost all beginners not keep  private key wallet because they think it is only for verification of making a wallet ,so if there are beginners there, must be someone who tells usefulness of  private key before private key lost

Who knows the pains he will be passing through now, not to talk of now the market is booming. What I deduced is that, he failed to take the necessary steps required before holding any coin and these steps comes in the form of knowing everything about wallets, how they work, how to save the private keys etc. He failed to know these and it costs him alot, so therefore as his friend, encourage him by teaching him everything that you believe will help him prevent such mistakes from happening again. I wish him the best.

When I lost a wallet pass phrase a year ago, I see to it to keep all of my pass phrase under one notebook. Of course I keep it safe as no one knows that I am into cryptocurrency. it's just too bad that as far as I know there is no way to retrieve an account when you don't have the pass phrase.
You are doing well its good to keep your key safe and not to share with anyone as there are so many clever hackers and they can take all your income and your saving away. It's much better to keep it in your account and your PC so no one would be able to know it and take your profit. The private key is something really important that we should not share it with people.

This is nothing but a careless move, its all your friend's fault for not taking the recovery phrases very serious, private keys and phrases are meant to be safe guided like you always do with bank accounts and ATM cards

The question us: how many cryptocurrency enthusiasts actually have a serious minded towards ensuring the protection of their personal data online? Many investors are just after the profit taking and not the security involved. We should learn to follow cryptocurrency fundamentals to avert issues of this nature. Until we all come to the true knowledge of be serious in keeping out password, passphrase and other confidential data we aren't ready to be part of the system.

$650 is quite a lot, to get that much money you need to work 1-2 months working in an office (offline). there is no way to get those assets back, except with recovery seeds. Yaps, crypto is indeed very risky, in addition to high volatility prices, the risk of loss also often occurs as events described by the OP. it's better if you are a beginner to learn it before holding / saving a few coins. Hot wallet in my opinion is suitable for beginners (Blockchain, coinbase, or exchange of good reputation). don't forget to give special security, like 2Fa code or multiple security. wallet cold is also vulnerable if you are not careful, such as a virus attack on the computer or the recovery key is not stored safely.

Very careless, not backing up recovery keys as a wallet is padlocked but does not have a key. my advice if you are still a beginner in crypto world and do not understand the security of assets in the wallet, which is to store it exchanged with a good reputation, in my opinion better. there is no way to return the asset, unless you can still access the recovery key. that's crypto, it's very safe, you yourself can't access your own assets if you lose your private key.

__________
For the problem of backing up a recovery key I usually write it on a stainless metal and place it in the safe.

If its an android app its ok as long as you didn't uninstall the application you use or never reformat your phone it will not gone as long its continue running. But for real security of your asset you need to save all important things because its your money involve.
I agree with the colleague's opinion above, that as far as I know I've experienced if it was with an Android application, you can repeat the install again and be able to return to normal as well as if you have reformatted it can certainly not come back again. and so that everything that is related to your wallet is wise so that you keep it well because that is the only way that can save there is no other way. always be wise in using the sophisticated tools that you get.

Some people really do that, but i think there are a lot of reason why they did it. And mostly because they don't know if they must save seed or maybe pass phrase or privae key maybe, because sometimes people already know is make account is only from email and pass, or maybe do something like me when i not back up my wallet because i only use it temporary, and i lose my dogecoin.

This is a Terrible  mistake anyone should not make. When creating a wallet the first that is demanded of you is to backup your recovery phrases. This is better to be backed immediately to avoid unforeseen situations such as this. So sorry for him as he learnt in a hard way. And this question keeps ringing in my heart. Can a wallet whose recovery phrase is lost ever be recovered?

If you take infinite amount of time - all BTC will be lost at some point in time. That is a fact of life.

If you look at BTC that has been dormant for many years, most of those funds are probably lost and will never be used ever.

The problem is not that people do not write down their recovery phrases and private keys, the problem is that people store them in the wrong places, and also that people are quite irresponsible about storing this kind of information. As practice shows, a person begins to take such things seriously only after he loses access to one of his wallets. The more valuable this wallet will be, the higher the probability that an individual will learn a lesson.

They should be making use of online wallets like Coinbase, Blockchain, Xapo and the rest of them, these are the wallets that newbies should be using. With these wallets they will just have to create their wallet and login anytime with their email and even when they forget their passwords they will still be able to recover it with the same email they have created it with.

But, if it’s offline wallets that requires recovery phrase you’re likely to lose your coins. As a newbie I used Xapo and I made the mistake of losing my password several times and Xapo saved my life. I only started to use wallets like BitPay and Exodus after I have got much experience.

So you would rather trust someone else rather than yourself when it comes about coins? Xapo and Coinbase both are a wallet platform that doesn't gives you any private key or master private key against the wallet. So what if someone hacks that wallet platform and steals all the bitcoins leaving owner unable to pay. What's the best - trust yourself or trust a third party blindly with your coins?

Someone you knew? Why didn’t you teach them about the recovery phrase? From the way you explained this I guess he was still a newbie and maybe didn’t know about the recovery phrase. This is the reason newbies shouldn’t make use of wallets that are made for people that are already experienced enough. They should be making use of online wallets like Coinbase, Blockchain, Xapo and the rest of them, these are the wallets that newbies should be using. Wallets you own it and no one actually knows those keys,if you failed to note down the recovery seeds then you will lose your wallet as well. Most wallets will not allow anyone to create a wallet without entering their recovery seeds for the first time so how it is possible for him to never write down those keys?

Are you reading carefully? His friend already uninstalled the app by mistake. I dont think if he reinstalled it back the same account or wallet address will be pop up on his application. Of course this will reset, and provide again another new wallet with new back up seed.

Forgetting to save the pass phrase is a sin on cryptocurrency if your using a wallet app.

Sorry OP but there is no other way for your friend to get his bitcoin and that's how cryptocurrency is such a transparent one. Newbie must learn especially this is a basic rule on creating wallets.

Why wouldn't they save the recovery phrase?
I think your friend is lazy enough to skip the most important thing in keeping your wallet secure.
This should be a lesson for him/her they know that it is about money so why don't they take it seriously?
If your friend is a new in crypto then he/she should have paid more attention on securing their investment.

wordsheet, consisting of 12 words that are very important for recovery. because of that many members here suggest to keep it well because it will definitely be very useful someday. because remembering 12 random words when making a wallet, in my opinion it's difficult than memorizing a formula. it will definitely be a very difficult situation.

Well, at first i wasn't aware of that recovery phrase too but the wallet will first give some warnings/advice that we should take down the recovery phrase for this reasons. I remembered, I did not write it down before and good thing before I have decided to uninstall it, I transfered all my funds to another wallet. That should be a lesson learned for your friend, try to contact their support and ask your friend for some data confimations.

Ow, that's a bad thing that he didn't write his seeds (recovery words). It's the most important thing because if you don't have it, you don't own your coin.
I think he can experiment of a system restore just like the PCs have this feature but it would be through his smartphone. I don't know if there's a required software with that but if there's nothing to lose, he might try recovering it in that manner and hoping that the app won't ask for the seeds when the app is restored.

He wasn't properly informed about the vital informations and rules that must be applied or taken into account before holding any coin. Every wallet have their own mode of protection, in some wallets they use private keys, some uses backup phrases etc while some uses both. In whichever case, one needs to understand that both are very important to the security of their funds and losing them means losing their assets. This is what your friend failed to understand. It has happened, and now it's better you make out time and teach him all he needs to know in order to avert such mistakes in the future.

This happens daily. Most person either misplace or totally lose their wallet keys.
It's always advice able to enable 2fa in all wallets and to back this up in your hard drive or Google drive. It's painful let your friend try hacking the wallet if he remembers any of the keys.

every time you install a wallet, there has been told to save the phrase. And how can he rewrite 12 words without saving them? If only remember, that's amazing. Maybe you can with other options such as logging in with email + password. You try asking the support whether it can be recovered or not.

You should have told him first when teaching about making a wallet, when I first taught a friend I always reminded that phrases and pk are the most important things of the wallet.
whatever it is he will definitely remember this incident because of 640 $ a lot of money especially if he collected it from the campaign or bounty that he followed.
I remember telling him how important private keys and recovery seeds are, if I was the one who helped him opened the wallet I would have forced him to write out the recovery phrase, its not my fault here
Not your fault but I know deep inside you feel responsible.
But anyway, you can still help him by trying to retrieve his wallet. Since it is an android wallet, there are some other ways to try retrieving it. As far as I know, the data of an android wallet will remain as long as your phone will not get reset or so (but it still depends on the wallet), if it is not applicable, you can try reaching out the support of the wallet and will ask for their assistance and they will give you ways to retrieve the wallet.

That's a lot of money, sadly. I think your friend and I had a similar situation. I recently changed my phone and unfortunately, I misplaced my wallet recovery phrase! I haven't found it until now so I still can't access my account. The good thing was it doesn't contain much so I am still okay so far.

This is really painful given to the fact it is Bitcoin of all cryptocurrencies. The mistake has been made and there is no way out because we are in a decentralized environment where everyone is supposed to be incharge of his privacy and security. With what happened, it's best you take out time and teach him in the importance of private keys, backup phrases, keystore etc. All these are the first thing to learn before ever thinking of investing or holding any crypto because when issues happen that when we know the importance of keeping records. As a suggestion, he can write his keys etc on a piece of paper and save in various directions in his house (that is if he is living alone) also, saving on a computer is good but must be compressed and locked for more security, but I don't apply this because anything can happen to the computer.

You're really not at fault here, it is your friend's responsibility to secure his wallet by saving his own private keys or recovery phrase. You have helped him enough by telling him what is important, then it is his responsibility to follow your reminders about it.

The spirit of negligence to me is a serious issue that should be checked and that we should be careful of. Yes, you might have so many things up your sleeves to achieve, but something is better done at the right time, than being postponed. This is where procrastination comes in. The guy that lost or did not write down his wallet's recovery phrase might have procrastinated writing it down, but which later turned out to what he never planned for. It is a lesson for him. he can still make much more than what he has lost because he is still living.
I am sure he would have learnt his lessons, never to repeat it again.

No backup of phrase or the private key of the wallet even from the application? Wow, so careless. If he has that big amount of funds, he should have known to be careful and smart in managing his asset. Moreover, this is about the very basic thing that must be understood. If you have no ph or pk, it means you don't own the wallet. Simple. But yeah, everybody has different characteristics. This can be a big lesson for all members here to be more careful. Save the important data and make backup always.

It is a classic story. Nevertheless, the loss of your friend will benefit the world - the number of bitcoins has irrevocably decreased.
I think nothing can be done here. Unless the application your friend used was able to save some data on the device itself.
I do not know how likely they are to recover, but you can always try to study this issue.

This is really heartbreaking and I can only but imagine what he is passing through now. It isn't easy to hold coins like BTC only to lose them but yet we need to be careful. One thing known about this crypto space is the case of private keys or backup phrase; all these should be considered extremely important. The security of our tokens lies in our hands and as such if compromised or private keys lost, there is nothing that can be done. I would implore you to teach him how to safeguard his wallet keys.

Sounds like a fool guy, even if he is a newbie he should care about his fund first, newbies I came across always ask if the wallet can get hacked first so I reply them to keep their private key or recovery seed safe to avoid stolen fund
Yeah, you should definitely think about the safety of your Bitcoins. Otherwise, you'll lose them forever or others will think for you  Grin

I'm sorry for you. This is a very bad situation, I had a similar situation with the wallet of waves. After that, I started keeping a few copies of the documents with passwords. But on the other hand, it will be a very valuable lesson for you and you will not make such mistakes in the future.

Many thinks once they set up a wallet on phone there is no need to write out the keys or phrase since the phone will always be in their possession but its wrong, any thing can happen at any time, your phone might get stolen or ruined beyond repair, always write out your private keys or recovery phrases just in case

Now, think of that and multiply that with 1000x because in reality there is a lot of money gone that will never return. And I mean in millions because when bitcoin first started not many people assumed it would be this big and they didn't took care of their money very well and now they can't get it back.

On top of that, there are places that literally do not have the access to their cold storage which assumed bankrupted companies but the money is still there, just can't be reached, which is why everyone assumes that money totally gone. Out of 18 million bitcoin in existence, it is estimated that over 1 million of it is inaccessible right now. That scarcity is great for us, this means 640 dollars more is removed from the market all together which makes bitcoin worth more (even a tiny fraction).

If it is an android wallet, there may be some way even without his recovery phrase. You can try to help him out and do various ways like contacting the support of the wallet. There are some cases like this before and some of them actually get their money back.

The carelessness or mistake of your friend who accidentally deleted the wallet application with a considerable balance is an event that should not have happened, if your friend made a backup to restore the wallet.
Did you warn your friend from the beginning to create a wallet to backup the installed wallet?
Wallet that does not have a recovery code will not be able to reopen and no one will.
I've also experienced the same thing, but the balance of the Altcoin token which the price is pretty good too.
This needs to be an example of learning for anyone, to always back up the recovery code for any wallet, so that they will still have access to manage it.
Feel sorry for your friend for losing the bitcoin he has accumulated with his hard work, but cannot be accessed because of his carelessness.

This is really very tough situation for that newbie, this type of mistake really can't be undone! If he is your friend then motivate him to work hard again to earn double of money and suggest him to buy a hardware wallet and this time he needs to make sure write down the phrase code on a paper.

That's unfortunate but may I know the name of wallet? Some wallets can be reset by email. I remember something in the previous month Peter Schiff Tweeted https://twitter.com/PeterSchiff/status/1218911797626847234 that he lost his bitcoin because the password is no longer valid but I guess Blockchain wallet replied to his tweet and help him fixed the issue and later on he corrected his mistake on this tweet https://twitter.com/PeterSchiff/status/1220135541330542592 I suggest to contact the support of this particular wallet.

Even if he reinstalled the waller again he won't have access to his fund again unless its web wallets like freewallet or Xapo that only needs email and password to login, what a waste, that bitcoin can easily grow bigger in few months time

Which Android wallet was it.?

The problem with the crypto community is there are no concrete baby stepping websites to make newbies to follow in their early days. Education is a must issue right now to control these type of bad luck's from happening.
If the wallet files are still on the device then there may be some hope that it can be recovered otherwise tell your friend to forget about it.

This is why we insist people first get knowledge on how bitcoin works before investing in it, but no one wants to learn from experience bitcoinist but want to just open wallet and buy bitcoin and benefit from the booming market. It's a case of carelessness. He should be thought the working principles of cryptocurrency.

If its an android app its ok as long as you didn't uninstall the application you use or never reformat your phone it will not gone as long its continue running. But for real security of your asset you need to save all important things because its your money involve.

That is right, that should be the first thing that you need to educate yourself. I'm sure that the OP's friend knew it first hand, but he didn't take it seriously resulting in a massive lost on his part. And with Bitcoin's price going to five digits again, I'm sure that he regret what he had done prior and after.

It's impossible to brute force it, I can feel your sentiment to his friends, but we can't do anything at this point but to shake our heads for his simply but costly mistakes.

If your friend uninstalled it, I doubt that he can recover his money, so sorry for his lost.

I guess we have the same question, that's a lot of money how come he didn't take care of it? Of course, that is the first thing to do if you wanted to involved yourself in crypto, learn and understand how to protect your assets, like your passwords, seeds, recovery phrases.

It is an expensive lessons to learn, and I do hope that next time, he will take care of everything.

And this is why I have written my wallet seed phrases and private keys (ETH) in 2 pieces of paper.
One is in the care of my wife. (which really takes care of papers that I handed to her)
And another to me in my stash of important things and passwords included.

Literally a piece of paper. People nowadays just want to save it in phones and computers but not me.
Old style is still the safest.

maybe you feel pity to your friend, but i think it's fully your friend fault. this happen commonly to people who didn't secure their wallet security properly.
sometimes they didn't wrote the recovery seed, sometimes they didn't enable authenticator, etc. this is about our money and it's very valuable. so please, don't be careless.

Sorry for the loss of your friend, 640$  is a big amount. And unfortunately, we hear such events a lot. Especially newbies are not pay much attention to wallet keys. And in the end, the investments they have made quite difficult can turn into garbage due to a mistake.

I have used a lot of wallets and still using a lot of multi-wallet like trust wallet, MEW, Coinomi, etc. I always back up my recovery phrase or key in a folder and keep it in my google drive so that it can be recover anytime. It takes only couple of minutes so if you are lazy then this can happen and you lost your money. If he does not have time to back up his phrase then he should use any hardware wallet.

Yes, he did a horrible mistake. This is normal for many newbies, many friends of mine did this when they were a newbie. But 640$, it's huge money comparing the recent condition of the market. Everyone should care about the phrase code/private keys. Many people do copy the address first not the private key, which is a mistake. I prefer Mewconnect where you can save the phrase code later!

i thing it's already uninstaled, so all datas will be removed from memory.

thats the real problem if he remove all data from that application that stored in that wallet is gone now. The only way to recover that balance is if someone new the phrase or private key of that wallet.
Since the owner dont know the wallet phrase  impossible to recover that wallet again.
I feel bad for him its not small amount to easily forget.

Make sure next time tell to him to secure all the details of the wallet because $640 is not small  amount of money and it is very big money  to me and that amount of money is not easy to earn you hardwrok and good capital to earn like that money .

Many wallet lost their key just like other before who forgot their key because the bitcoin before was very low value and once they saw the value is very high they got nothing because they did not believe to the bitcoin. I don't know how to recover the wallet like that but I hope he can recover.

I think this not a new story in crypto world because we can see many stories like this every day. So people should understand the importance of keys and recovery seeds, it will take few minutes to take backup and keep it in safely if anything unfortunate happens we can recover our funds. So people should learn lessons from this kind of mistakes.

maybe it happened that your friend deleted the wallet with the reason that only tokens or coins that have no price and after a while there is a price, that's what people usually do not think there is a price but valuable. if it's like that can not be recovered better give advice  in order to save the correct phrase so that the same thing does not happen
