Ok so I was thinking about mining for hobby, cause I have a steady job. I can invest some $$$ no problem. Still I have to find a moderatly cheap setup to mine and to play with the rig Smiley
Still best option would be Gpus you can buy AMD Rx480 for a small start or Nvidia 1080TI for a better start they would save you some good money. If you have a steady job then my advice will be to invest in mining once and increase your rigs monthly for example you decide to spend $100 per month on your mining hardware. make a small rig of 2 Rx480 that board you select should be expendable for upto 6 cards check the specifications of motherboard on how many PCI slots in total it has. Then next month add 2 cards to this rig. Next month add 2 more cards to it. After 3 months buy a new board and start your second rig. But do not touch your earnings in cryptos. By this time next year tell me how much you earned you will have a very good success story of yourself.

Ok thank you for your help...

so for mining altcoins it is best to setup a GPU miner...

Yes GPU mining is better than any ASICs. For many reasons I had 25 of the Bitmain Antminer S9. And most of them got burnt up even inside the rooms I had them with the room temperature of 20c even before the Return of Investment. After that I am using GPU mining Rigs. There are too many benefits of GPU Rigs instead of the ASICS.

ASICS when the profits are high the manufacturers will build and run in their facilities and since they can repair it does not matter for them the production cost. They are only on sale when the profitability is low. Also the prices are so high that these companies take all the profit you are going to make when they sell the machine.

GPUs on the other hand are available everywhere you can increase the number of GPUs per machine as you earn from the ROI. The initial costs are not so high to take away your profits. All the components of a GPU Rig can be resold or if a single card causes problem you can replace it. Where as in case of ASICS you have to send the machine back and they will charge you the shipping and replacement of parts that becomes too expensive so my advice will be to use GPUs. ASICS are only the wastage of your money. And never get caught in the cloud mining scams. No matter what their sites say and no matter what their testimonials say. They are all paid stuff.

Hello fellow miners, I have an option to aquire Antminer 5S quite cheap...

the question is, is it worth it?

It is probably not profitable to mine bitcoins with it, but maybe some altcoins?

Which would you recommend or should I pass on the opportunity to buy?

Thank you in advance for your answers

you mean sha256 altcoin? there are not many altcoin with Bitcoin also anymore and if there are they are already deaf better to sell that relic and buy a you instead a cheap one if you don't have the funds

What about renting the rig... would this be safer than going into a mining venture?

Ok, so it is not even profitable for altcoin mining?

So my guess is to aim for S7 or S9?
go for the s9 if you want to use it to mine altcoins you might want to find altcoins with sha 256 algorithm because otherwise the asic miner wouldnt work

If you have free electricity then you can make arround $40/month otherwise it takes 590 watts and your monthly bill will be arround $43 @ $0.1/kWh and you will be in loss.

My suggestion is to pass on and forget this option.
