There are differences between S5 and S3 boards. If a chip is mal functioning at S3 boards the the chip does not work but the rest hashes.For S5 it is not like that.If a chip is mal functioning the board does not hash.
There are many reasons for this.I have had about 10 S5 miners some of which 2 boards broken some 1 board.I am writing down what I have experienced I have lost three of them in two weeks time after purchase.They were working for antpool.Antpool was out of use.The miners could not connect to the pool, the fans were not working because there was no internet connection.I lost 3 miners.
I also lost a miner as soon as I receieved.There was lack of thermal paste.One board gone.
If someone opens a topic we can compile our case studies under this topic.

The thermal paste applied on those s2 blades is crapy at best.
I redid them all and the temps are the a bit lower and you can be sure there are no hotspots.
Try that.
Or i have a spare controll+backplane.
Tested and working with all blades on.
PM if intrested.

I have a similar problem with S5.I have sent a board to Bitmain.They will check.I have never over clocked.
I have measured the voltage of working and not working board.I have found the problematic chip by this way.If a chip is malfunctioning the board does not work.
I recommend you to measure the voltage of first and last chips.
Today, I can not access to the miner.I am suspicious of a virus which effects miners.

Which "chips" are you talking about? Voltage regulator or something? Do you have a picture?
I have the same problem with an S3. One minute it was working, power cycle, and now although the firmware boots, the network works, etc, it will not start hashing. Fan and ASIC status are blank. cgminer says "No devices detected!"
Edit:
The S3 has what looks like two 3.3V test pads and one 1.8V test pad on the control board. They all test good.

Upon further investigation is looks like one of the hash boards is bad in my S3. It will hash at half speed with the one good board but the other board doesn't seem to work. Why would a whole hash board go bad? Hmmm... I'm not sure what the protocol/communication is between a hash board and the PIC32 on the control board. I know it's not the control board though.

Tried taking them all apart and still 1 blade in each is not lighting up? Does not mater how many blades I try in that slot?

Well I bought the 2 S2's off of my buddy. I formatted the sd cards and refreshed them with a image I found online. Put them back in an they beeped and temp and everything showed up. But they both show 1 board at least all, -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- --------. The green light is on them 2 boards, tried moving them around and still the same. Also half in the 1, s2 is not showing any temps next to the boards? The r hashing around 905 Gh's a piece. Hmmmmm?

No did not mess with Firmware. They just both show x.x.x.x for hardware

Fiddling around with this, Hooked it back up and the temp showed on the LCD and it started hashing away. unhooked it and will not show temp or the blades in the settings or fan speeds and lights on blades any longer again. Lights on Control board and MB r on? Bad Control Boards? Reseated everything in both? They do the same thing in another location on the LCD and in the miner config screen.
Ok, Unhooked 2 Antminer s2's hooked them back up but will not Mine. Went in to the Config and logs in and then go to Miner stats but NO fan speeds r showing and no Blades? On both Miners that have been hashing 30 mins before hand for days strait? The LCD does not show any Temp reading at all on one or the other?? WTF?
