Just a suggestion to use the foam packaging that came with the Antminer and put it underneath to shield vibration noise. When the fans are spinning fast they create vibration harmonics though all surfaces.

I used the foam to shield the Antminer vibrations from my attic. Be careful not to block the fans though with foam as air flow is important. Also remove the cover to reduce the temperature of the Antminer S3 which will reduce the fan speed.

the vibration may be the key there....I have an s3 that sits on top of my s2.  that s3 shows high fan rpm's.  I'll try shipping foam in between.

thanks!

Difficult questions...
If it is of any interest for the community, I just keep you posted of what I am doing:
* reduce the frequency down to 200MHz (fan2 runs at 3000... the noise is a bit more acceptable)

Chain2 in my case is hotter than chain1... I read that it is normally the contrary... could a clean/change of thermal paste in chain 2 be of any help in my case??

No change while unplugging the 2 PCIe  Grin

Just as an idea (ambiant T. around the unit: 22degC):
31 / 32degC => Fan1: 660 Fan2: 3420

39 / 40degC => F1: 1740 F2: 5880rpm

This is completely different of most of the screenshots I see in the forum...
The temperature sensor is OK... How can I adjust the fan speed? "Manualy" with a potentiometer on Fan2?

Why are they blowing at different speed?

Bad luck...
I flashed the firmware (keeping the settings) and got the same at restart with a Fan2 at around 6000rpm and a "low temperature" of the sensors (~35.C)
I stopped it to let it cool...
I had the 4 PCIe plugged... I took 2 off... not sure it is related... but I am trying!

Shall I try a "hard reset" with a pin on the button next to the ethernet plug?
Would it make a difference? Am I loosing the IP of my settings by doing that?

Watch out the site has pop-ups.... next time please use a better image site.

Yes those speeds are higher then normal.  You could load firmware on it hoping it is software that i wrong.  Be careful as always with flashing firmware.     If that does not work then most likely the sensor is having problems.    There are 2 sensors on S3 so you can still feel safe from not over heating is the good thing

Hi,
Mine are running at 1700 and 5500rpm.
From what I see from other units... it is far too high (room temp at home: ~20.C).
I red about people changing the fans:
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/upgrading-the-s3-fans-787948

What can I do to reduce the speed? Change firmware? Any idea?
Clean and change Thermal Paste?

Thanks for the help!

I guess so, judging from the screenshots of the miner status pages people post in this forum. Most Antminer S3s seem to run much quieter.

Well, mine Shows for both 15300 with room temperatur of 20°C! So there IS something wrong with the sensor.

Hi all,

I have been reading a lot about the Antminer S3's reduced noise level in comparison with the S1, and the advertised fan speeds of between 1800 – 3000 rpm. Theoretically, it should be running quieter. Well, my S3's fans always run between 5800 – 6200, regardless of room temperature (which is at 22° Celsius). I haven't had a look inside yet, but could it be that the heatsinks are not attached properly (and how can I check this)? Has anyone else experienced similar high fan speeds?

I'm thankful for any advice!  Grin

i am concerned about my fan speed too.  Right now it shows 6900
