Well mine just burned up today. Had issues with att uverse. Really pissed. I'm outside of my warranty. Any suggestions.
it might be better not to flash firmware and risk miner destruction. if you do flash firmware wait at least 1 hour for each flash and make sure you hear a series of beeps
I wasn't aware there is more than one version of the smits firmware. How can you tell which you have?
Not saying it's not working - just that it mines SLOWER than the Bitmain firmware on my other units that have cgminer 4.8.0 instead of the 4.9.0 on the smits unit

I DO recommend using actual electrical tape for isolation of the pulled-out pin - some 'adhesive' tape types have very little insulation value.
I've not been impressed with smits firmware - have it on one of my S5s, and that machine hashes a good 5% slower than ANY of my others at the same clock. I don't think the cgminer 4.9.0 is optimised right for the S5, as that's the only difference I can find that would account for the difference in hashrate.
I have SMITS firmware on over 14 S5's and always has worked great. cgminer 490 freq control version.

I'm getting my hand on an Antminer S5 and i would very much like to know if there was a firmware solution or if that fan control properly operate when there is a lost of internet connection. Full fan control also sound great to wind down the fan a bit? No need for 4k rpm if the unit is in mid 50s C imo.

Great job! You should write what you did for everyone that want to resolve issue with self burning devices. You unpluged PWM from 4 pin fan connector?

But I used the sharp tool in the picture to push the pin out of the connector. It took me seconds to safely get it out without cutting the wire. Then I used black adhesive tape to isolate the pin.

It's a little annoying if I have to sell them in the future, but I prefer that than the risk of frying them! I'll make an adapter for my next S5s (Material's coming in 3 weeks... !)

Review the S5 thread. Sorry to hear this happened and lucky a fire didn't start or burn your place down. I reported this last March in the S5 thread. Bitmain has given me a "new" firmware but since I have all my fans directly connected now and the smits firmware is working good I'm just going to keep them the way they are. Especially in this NJ heat. Anything related to this bug should be looked at by Bitmain very closely. You should not have to re-arrange your fan configuration from stock if everything was working correct.y

Bitmain... Please also fix (if it is possible at all) the issue when chips stay loaded with some usleless calculations while cgminer can't get any work from pool due to Internet connection absence.

I'm not brave enough to try out the firmware (My current S5's have been running fine and have added pull fans), but just a heads up for everyone looking for answers on this issue, it appears something should be officially released in short order.

how is everyone making money; with a difficulty of 2% 475 startup costs with a s4 and 2000 hash rate I'm showing break even after 176 days at current price. the business electricity is 0.03/kwh where I am now

I got quick response from BITMAIN, unit is on the way to the service, so they will take a look, but the thing is that they know about this issue, so i guess that i will get replacement unit in no time.
So far their customer service is really good... Will update as soon as I get some new info.

Don't cut it. If you have a small straight screwdriver or a good knife, it's really easy to lift the retainer clip on the plastic connector and just slide the whole pin out. Fold the wire back and tape it down to the cable or something so you don't risk grounding it on anything and turning the fan off, but then to put it back to stock all you have to do is slide the end back in the plastic housing. Completely non-destructive and completely effective.

I have the same problem with S4+ units. If they lose network connectivity, they lower fan speeds to about ~1500RPM and start boiling. There was some incredible heat coming out of those boxes when I power cycled them. Thankfully they didn't die, but they certainly shortened their lifespans and burned a lot of electricity for nothing.

Today I was installing a few S5. In the process I connect one by one... but the power supply is ON. I note that the miners who are ON but without ethernet wire was getting hot.

One thing is on my mind atm.
Since BTCGuild will shut down on 1st of July, and of this is regular issue for the S5 Miners, since there are still 6500 TH/s on BtcGuild 1 day from shutting down, what will happen if some or majority of those miners are S5s? Are we about to see many of similar topics in the next few days, since technically all of them will loose connection to the pool? Hope not...

I can confirm this issue on my units as well...I have the fans connected directly to power though, but heat still insane. I think the chips are still powered but not hashing, so they are essentially 100% heaters.

So when it loses the internet connection the mining stops and the fans stop also? Is that how it works? On the S3+ when the internet is out the fans just slow down they don't turn off.

I bought 2 s3s for $300 with 2 power supplys was it a good deal? I could have maybe bought the s5. do I need a router with bridge of any speed to get them mining?

You were lied to. The S1 didn't even exist two years ago. AM Blades and, technically, the first few BFL units were just starting to move.

Then i did a furmware update and i think bitmain fixed it olready. Becouse on friday my internet went out again and temp stayed the same for the 5 minits i checked. Anyone tried to do this?

If you pull the blue wire on the fan, it should be locked to 100% full time (no throttling) without needing to wire up stuff directly to PSU. Should work.

Does anybody know if any Antminer S3+ have these issues? I had internet issues in the past and the miners just kept beeping and beeping, didn't seem to overheat.

this one was with stock fan, it never had temp issues, running really stable for the past 2 and a half months at stock speed.

That is why all (or at least one) S5 fans should be connected directly to PSU.
Well I had quite unpleasant situation today, my rig lost internet connection for an hour, and during that period 1 of 2 S5 Units fried itself to death. Many chips on the hashboards are burnt and cracked opened form the heat. I can log into web interface, so control board seems fine, its just that all ASIC chips are now bunch of ------------
Will update with pictures later in the evening.
I have already read about issue with some S5 units that autoshutdown > 80c is not working, and that if unit looses internet connection it rises temperature well over 80c.
