it might be better not to flash firmware and risk miner destruction.  if you do flash firmware wait at least 1 hour for each flash and make sure you hear a series of beeps

I wasn't aware there is more than one version of the smits firmware. How can you tell which you have?

Not saying it's not working - just that it mines SLOWER than the Bitmain firmware on my other units that have cgminer 4.8.0 instead of the 4.9.0 on the smits unit

Personal text my ass....
In the meantime

Not quite identical to how I did mine, but close enough folks might mistake our miners for being modded by the same person.

 8-)

I usually use a small jeweler's screwdriver 'cause I have it around, but have used an XActo in the past to remove pins from connectors for other reasons in the past. Just needs to have a point or a very short narrow blade to be able to press down on the retainer tab while pulling the pin out.

I DO recommend using actual electrical tape for isolation of the pulled-out pin - some 'adhesive' tape types have very little insulation value.

I've not been impressed with smits firmware - have it on one of my S5s, and that machine hashes a good 5% slower than ANY of my others at the same clock. I don't think the cgminer 4.9.0 is optimised right for the S5, as that's the only difference I can find that would account for the difference in hashrate.

I have SMITS firmware on over 14 S5's and always has worked great. cgminer 490 freq control version.

anyoane tested the shit?

I'm getting my hand on an Antminer S5 and i would very much like to know if there was a firmware solution or if that fan control properly operate when there is a lost of internet connection. Full fan control also sound great to wind down the fan a bit? No need for 4k rpm if the unit is in mid 50s C imo.

Great job! You should write what you did for everyone that want to resolve issue with self burning devices. You unpluged PWM from 4 pin fan connector?

Just like opentoe said:

Don't cut! Be easier to buy a little tool to get the pins out, so you can put them back in if you want to re-sell.

But I used the sharp tool in the picture to push the pin out of the connector. It took me seconds to safely get it out without cutting the wire. Then I used black adhesive tape to isolate the pin.

So the issue is that when they lose their internet connection (ie, switch or dns fails or it runs out of backup pools) the chips stay on for some reason?  Eventually burning up the hardware?

Are there other symptoms?  Like, the unit is on and not responsive to pings or the WebUI is not accessible?

If so, this is troubling because we host a large number of S5s that are super finicky, they randomly just stop working even with stable networking and power and require a hard reset and costs me a lot of man hours resetting these things.  Also, this behavior does not seem to be heat related.

Lets start a list of firmware versions that this is happening with.

I'll cut the blue wire on my S5s fan first thing tomorrow morning...

It's a little annoying if I have to sell them in the future, but I prefer that than the risk of frying them! I'll make an adapter for my next S5s (Material's coming in 3 weeks... !)

It shouldn't heat up if it looses internet connection, it makes no sense. I guess that unit goes into some kind of loop... But why besides that it didn't shut down >80c is beyond me...

Review the S5 thread. Sorry to hear this happened and lucky a fire didn't start or burn your place down. I reported this last March in the S5 thread. Bitmain has given me a "new" firmware but since I have all my fans directly connected now and the smits firmware is working good I'm just going to keep them the way they are. Especially in this NJ heat. Anything related to this bug should be looked at by Bitmain very closely. You should not have to re-arrange your fan configuration from stock if everything was working correct.y

Bitmain... Please also fix (if it is possible at all) the issue when chips stay loaded with some usleless calculations while cgminer can't get any work from pool due to Internet connection absence.

Bitmain support emailed me with a link for a firmware they are currently putting through internal testing, that should resolve the overheating issue when the internet connection goes down.

I'm not brave enough to try out the firmware (My current S5's have been running fine and have added pull fans), but just a heads up for everyone looking for answers on this issue, it appears something should be officially released in short order.

I would rather not share the link for privacy reasons or feel responsible for inadvertently bricking someones unit.

"Soon".

Same on S4+ firmware, I have a copy but its not been tested extensively yet.

My units are doing this same thing. Lets hope to see the new firmware out soon.

I haven't heard anything from Bitmain or doggie so I would say it safer to assume all firmwares are currently affected and the only safe method is the fan mod someone described.

Dogie - do you have any insight on affected firmware versions?

I got quick response from BITMAIN, unit is on the way to the service, so they will take a look, but the thing is that they know about this issue, so i guess that i will get replacement unit in no time.

So far their customer service is really good... Will update as soon as I get some new info.

It's a little annoying if I have to sell them in the future, but I prefer that than the risk of frying them! I'll make an adapter for my next S5s (Material's coming in 3 weeks... !)

Don't cut it. If you have a small straight screwdriver or a good knife, it's really easy to lift the retainer clip on the plastic connector and just slide the whole pin out. Fold the wire back and tape it down to the cable or something so you don't risk grounding it on anything and turning the fan off, but then to put it back to stock all you have to do is slide the end back in the plastic housing. Completely non-destructive and completely effective.

Awesome! Works like charm. Thanks for the hint.

I have the same problem with S4+ units. If they lose network connectivity, they lower fan speeds to about ~1500RPM and start boiling. There was some incredible heat coming out of those boxes when I power cycled them. Thankfully they didn't die, but they certainly shortened their lifespans and burned a lot of electricity for nothing.

Come on, BITMAIN. Stupid stuff like this shouldn't be an issue after 10 hardware releases.  Undecided

Today I was installing a few S5. In the process I connect one by one... but the power supply is ON. I note that the miners who are ON but without ethernet wire was getting hot.

This is a big firmware flaw!!

My S5 have 4 weeks old.

Take care, and add 2 or 3 pools.

One thing is on my mind atm.

Since BTCGuild will shut down on 1st of July, and of this is regular issue for the S5 Miners, since there are still 6500 TH/s on BtcGuild 1 day from shutting down, what will happen if some or majority of those miners are S5s? Are we about to see many of similar topics in the next few days, since technically all of them will loose connection to the pool? Hope not...

I can confirm this issue on my units as well...I have the fans connected directly to power though, but heat still insane. I think the chips are still powered but not hashing, so they are essentially 100% heaters.

This is a huge firmware/design flaw...not sure why bitmain has not fixed it yet...

So when it loses the internet connection the mining stops and the fans stop also? Is that how it works? On the S3+ when the internet is out the fans just slow down they don't turn off.

Had the same last week.
I'm running 5 S5's so i was pretty sick from it.
2 where broken. One had a board with 4 chips that don't work any more.
And the other one had a hole board that's broken. This one is a month old so it's going back to bitmain tomorrow.

Then i did a furmware update and i think bitmain fixed it olready. Becouse on friday my internet went out again and temp stayed the same for the 5 minits i checked. Anyone tried to do this?

Unit is less then 4 months old... I thinks I am still good.

90 day warranty I think you will be disappointed.  But I do make errors.

You are correct it is 90 days - https://bitmain.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/202661989-Limited-90-Day-Warranty-Terms .

I have ordered them 24th of March (so 94 days), they have arrived to me I think 10 days later Cheesy

So I guess they will count date of purchase, anyhow I will report this and see what happens, maybe someone at BitMain will have understanding for what happened.

Wish you best of luck you can make a ticket over at - https://bitmain.zendesk.com/hc/en-us .

If you pull the blue wire on the fan, it should be locked to 100% full time (no throttling) without needing to wire up stuff directly to PSU. Should work.

many people had a similar problem with some, but probably not all of S5 (opentoe and HolgerDansk were among the first) and aarons6 reproduced the phenomenon.
From all these cases I assume that Bitmain is fully aware of this, but keeps mum and deals with each case by itself.
I escaped the burnout, but miner was overheating.
Your case seems to be the most severe and dangerous, but you can see from the thread below that S5 in jtoomim facility also burned down during intermittent internet situation.

Well I had quite unpleasant situation today, my rig lost internet connection for an hour, and during that period 1 of 2 S5 Units fried itself to death. Many chips on the hashboards are burnt and cracked opened form the heat. I can log into web interface, so control board seems fine, its just that all ASIC chips are now bunch of ------------

Will update with pictures later in the evening.

I have already read about issue with some S5 units that autoshutdown > 80c is not working, and that if unit looses internet connection it rises temperature well over 80c.

I am first owner, and bought units directly from BitMain, is there any way I could get replacement under warranty?

Did anyone had similar experience?

Thanks

UPDATE Edit:

This guy had similar situation, so I guess BitMain should be aware of the issue by now, I will contact them today, and let you know how it all went.
