Just buy a few spares.

but if you want to play around   buy this grease

https://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/06623235

pack the fan bearing and point it vertically  with air flow downward for 2 days  this is due to the bearing shaft of the fan.  it will be on top and all  the lube will fully get to do its thing

v
fan with new grease
v
miner
v
fan not lubed
v

after 2 days reverse

A
fan not lubed
A
miner
A
fan with new grease
A

this works wonders for older failing fans.

I finally go back to horizontal

> greased fan > miner > non grease fan >

1 tub of white grease will do hundreds of fans

or buy these on eBay

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Antminer-Bitmain-7000RPM-Dual-Ball-Bearing-4-pin-Connector-Replacement-FAN/283107648063?

note I have 25 s9's so I have a few spares on hand and I also grease fans a few times as it is cheaper.

For a small mine it makes a difference, everyone should have replacement fans on hand. I'd stand vertical but my fear is tipping not fan degradation.

A humble Siberian miner
My advice is to forget about it and just put it into mining.  Roll Eyes Really, I have several S7s running for years in horizontal orientation. I just replace the fans from time to time. Not on all S7s. Not so often.

CLEAN non GPL infringing code made in Rust lang
With canaan seem easier to set like this. I would probably look to secure units with front and rear fans.

Has anyone tried vertical orientation with the later units? S9, S15?

Reading another thread i just remembered something important: Fan bearings don't like changing orientation. Apparently ball bearings are better for horizontal, and sleeve bearings for vertical (fan orientation, not miner). So a common fan actually needs to be standing as opposed to lie flat, as they would in a miner oriented vertically...

TL;DR you might need to replace your fans with ball bearings to run your miner vertically.

I just did the vertical thing for the asics and it works very well !

For months i was changing almost every 2 weeks about how i should place the miners.

I have 6 of avalonminers and it was a pain at start to get a good soundproof and hot temperature proof solution.

Putting them in a normal room was not that bad for the temperature, the asics had all of the space in the room to cool themself but the problem was the noise as i do it in a small appartment.

Then i saw a video with a guy putting his mining gpu in a plant grow tent. I bought it on amazon  and it actually works pretty well with asics too !

It removes a little bit of annoying high frequency of noise, but mostly, it is hermetic about the air so then you can control easily the temperature that you want in it, it will not be affected by the environment around.

That plus 2 more speed controlled fan for the input and output air.

But still the days that it was more hot outside, even with a neutral pression in the tent, the machines wouldnt stop being hotter and hotter.

So two days ago i've tried to put all the asics and the bottom of the tent and use the natural physics of the cold/hot air by putting them vertically and tada!! It works !!!

All the heat coming from the frontal out fan of the asics is obviously coming directly to the top where the fan is getting out the hot hair, and so then it will not rebounced everywhere on the sides.

Plus, the other heat that is getting out from the metal cover all around the asics is getting directly on the top without affecting the air around it, without getting all other sides and to heat the air at the bottom of the hermetic tent.

It gives more 15 free more degrees celcius. It's -5 degrees outside tho, but still. I had them around 20-22 before, and now they're around 5-7.

It is an old topic but i hope that at least a few people will try it, we dont see much topic about asics put vertically for mining neither any videos, while it's so effective...

Machines at bottom inside : https://nsa40.casimages.com/img/2019/02/18/190218034907580957.jpg — the towels are to prevent the cold air which is getting in, below the asics, to get pushed all around the corners of the tent and being pushed at the end of the top of the end without going inside the miners.

Do you have any images of how you mounted them? For me its not and issue of get the miner vertical but where do you position the PSU especially when you use the bitmain one with not much slack. If anyone can attach links to other post I'd appreciate it

You have to use a steel wire shelving cabinet-storage like this: https://i.imgur.com/lDDWWvQ.png

Then you put the PSU,s next to it or UNDER it and put the cables like i did like that :

Update:

Kept the two S7's vertical, running a 637M clock and still at or under ~60*C board temp. HW errors are negligible.

Anyone else see if there was significant difference from running it vertically?

I am confused on what you are saying, the higher he overclocks it will definitely go past 50.

I'm saying that the chips will hash more at +50C operating temp, compared to +40C, at ex. 600Mhz. At least thats my experience.

Did you try them with 1 horizontal and 1 vertical, take the temp readings and then flipping them (horizontal becomes vertical and vertical becomes horizontal), then take a second set of readings?  You know, to control for if maybe the vertical reads low and the horizontal one reads high?  If the same miners did both positions I think it would control for that...

Overall, nice idea!

I don't know if this worked only with S5 because they were mostly open heatsink, but if you put your miners vertically, a user had a boxfan blowing air upward from beneath, did a big difference. Even horizontally, i have a box fan blowing air with the air flow and it does a huge difference.

Would be interesting to see if it work with S7, if it does not, then that mean the positive air pressure doesn't really help the internal air flow that much.

True, but air speed minimizes the effect of natural convection from my understanding, and with two fans humming at 4200RPM I wasn't sure there would be much of a difference.  My experience was there is.

Can't wait to put a fan under and try some over-clocking.

Low temp's will not help you when overclocking the S7, it thrives at 50+ ^^ What you need are PSU's with 12,2+V output.

To be expected considering heat only wants to do one thing in life - rise. Thanks for sharing your results.

Oh, and I had them at opposite positions during testing (#53 vertical while #54 was horizontal, etc) to try to eliminate environmental factors as the cause, the screenshots were also taken at the same time of day, one of them 24 hours after making the switch, the other one was 3 days later.

So I thought I'd test Strato's idea out with the S7 to see if there was any appreciable difference between horizontal or vertical orientation on a wire rack.  Turns out there was:

S7 #53 Horizontal Orientation:
Mean board temperature: 57.66*C

S7 #53 Vertical Orientation:
Mean board temperature: 53.66*C

Temperature difference of -4*C by going vertical

S7 #54 Horizontal Orientation:
Mean board temperature: 58.66*C

S7 #54 Vertical Orientation:
Mean board temperature: 55*C

Temperature difference of -3.66*C by going vertical

Both S7's were side by side without any obstruction to the intake or outlet.  Ambient temperature is around 25-28*C.  There was no box fan blowing on the intake like in Strato's S5 setup, though I would like to get one and try higher clocking. I don't actually own 54 Antminer S7's, it was just the sequence after S3's, S5's, etc.

I'm not saying that this is conclusive based on my huge sample size of 2 miners, but I'd love to see others try it out and report their findings if their space allows it.
