The next best thing is probably #bitcoin-otc on freenode. I'm sure you could figure out a way to get some bitcoins there.

I've run into some similar issues in Chicago.

It would be nice if the site allowed some way for users to report advertisers that don't respond, and if the site would pull down those ads.  Unfortunately, there appear to be a lot of old ads posted by people who are no longer active on the site.

Have you tried posting your own ad yet?  I've had a lot more success posting my own ad and waiting for someone to contact me than with trying to respond to the ads of others.  You might try offering a discount on the bitcoins as well to encourage people to respond to your ad instead of others.

I'm in need of exchanging some of my bitcoin for fiat nonsense paper dollars and thought I'd try localbitcoins which of course is face to face p2p. I initiated a few exchanges but heard nothing back at all. Zilch. I'm exchanging a non trivial amount so I can't imagine what the problem is. Ladybytes' video demo of localbitcoins exchange in NYC seemed really easy . She had an appointment within a couple hours Huh. I'm on day three and haven't heard a thing. My city is Los Angeles, which i would think would be prime bitcoin exchanging territory .
