Not just you girls but even us, men also experienced eye rolls when we start to talk about bitcoin in real life.

People that I've told about bitcoin can't believe that I'm into it. All they think that it's a plain scam and that's all. They are not open to discussion and exchange of knowledge about it. They will hear you out but they will not absorb everything you say because of their closed minds.

Personally, I don't care at all, is it girl or man behind profile. I think gender is irelevant here. But when I'm talking with someone here or reading their post, I imagine that there is a man behind profile. It's not so "called boys" club, but yeah, women is minority here, despite that Bitcointalk is gender neutral forum. I don't know exact reasons why, but girls are showing less interest in Bitcoin.
Though, we actually don't know how many girls we actually have here because most users haven't specified their gender in profile. After all, I doubt that number of girls here is so insignificant that someone would accept them with words "WOOw a GirL WhO inteRESteD iN bitcoIn"

CLEAN non GPL infringing code made in Rust lang
This is not a rule of reddit but a rule of internet. For several reasons, you don't want to give personal details of you, or at the very least, mislead them. The language doesn't help much because it isn't gender neutral as some other languages can be. The "them" "they" proposal is gaining traction, probably to the chagrin of english teachers worldwide, but there is a need for it. If you can act androgin, even better. This of course sorta ruins a lot of the social interaction, so hopefully you have that in real life rather than online.

Sure you can play the opposite gender, but the problem is changing attitude when they learn you are of certain gender/race/etc. So the less they know, the better.

And for that reason, you cannot tell if there are "many girls" here or not, and its best that it remains that way. For all you know, its men impersonating girls anyway (or women impersonating men)

And that is even before getting into the preferences, feelings, or identify as; gender discussion.

As they say: There are no girls online, only men and fbi agents pretending to be 14yo f.

Serves you right for going to Reddit instead of Bitcoin Talk. Smiley Many of us like girls, especially girls who are actually "girls". I can remember reading a psychology report years ago, and it stated that girls need a man with an IQ that is no lower than a few points of theirs, but men can accept almost anything, especially if the girl is ornamental. This tends to make men with an average IQ feel uncomfortable with intelligent girls. There are a lot of intelligent guys here in this forum, so as an intelligent girl, you should feel comfortable here.

and congrats on getting into Bitcoin at a great time, well if you arrived at the end of the crash rather than the beginning.

I can confirm that the Bitcoin community is pretty much a cis-male-only club. Even I only get away with having "Female" on my profile because everyone thinks it's part of one of my elaborate practical jokes that I've forgotten the purpose of, though some people are starting to get suspicious... In any case, I recommend wearing a fake beard if you're planning on sticking around. Smiley

Just because of privacy concerns not many girls revealed their gender in the online public forums like bitcoin and there is no need for it as well.We still can get into the discussions irrespective of your gender, there are lot of girls are in the forum but officially they don't reveal it to anyone.

It seems to me that this is not a topic we should discuss here.
Problems that arise on this forum, not on other forums, should be discussed here, in Meta section.
I suggest you to move this topic to other/ off-topic.
I'm not proposing this because you are a girl, but because of the forum rules that all members should follow.
Anyway, as a new member I welcome you and I hope that you will not have problems here as in the other forum.
Personally, I haven't noticed that the female members here have any problems but it's true that there are a lot more male members and I don't really know the reason for that.

I wasn't going to suggest you were proposing that coz Im a girl dont worry  Cheesy Im not like 'cRaZy FeMIniST' or anything although I see how this post could give that impression.

Noob question: How do I move this post?

Simply you need to look for the "move topic" button  which is located on bottom left of this page and move it to "Off-topic"

I think Mods have already done this for you  Smiley

Have other girls in the forum had similar experiences? I mean surely theres a reason theres such a small online presence of girls on these kinds of forums?

Well, here are some threads which were made for the discussion of girls usage of bitcoins but i don't think here you will find much info which you are interested to know, the personal experiences.

Maybe you should go to another forum? Where will it be appreciated that you are a girl or a guy? For example, a dating site? For this forum, gender is not important, as the forum itself assumes anonymity.
Here you can draw attention to yourself in another way. This is exactly what you desire the most today?
If you are strong in knowledge about cryptocurrencies, tell us everything you know. Believe me, if your information turns out to be useful, then what your gender, hair color, skin color, what you like to eat for breakfast, many will be indifferent.

I asked a question about the experiences of a specific gender therefore gender is 100% relevant to be mentioned. Clearly you didnt understand the question as you've commented this nonsense.

If my mentioning gender is an issue, chances are you aren't someone the question is relevant to. I don't have to prove my knowledge to you but your comment is a brilliant example of what I mean.

I reveal I'm a girl (necessary for this post)
You assume I'm attention seeking 'try a dating forum'
You patronise and question my knowledge 'If youre strong in knowledge about cryptocurrencies tell us everything you know'
Your whole tone is belittling and thats the issue I have with reddit and am asking other girls if they've experienced.

That said, your comment is the first with big incel energy so already here seems better than reddit. Thank you for being a lovely example.

Ah as suspected, we're infiltrated the boys club  Cheesy

Tbf its not like I have a consistent issue with it, its just the overwhelming number of incels on reddit prompted me to post this.

Side note, my beard is on the way Grin Grin

I know there are a lot of girls on this forum, they just don't mention it in their profiles or anywhere (but some do).

I think this is an issue with reddit (it might not be the whole of reddit) but they definitely have a large "incel" community. Getting girls interested in the physical sciences is generally hard and that's how a lot of us come here from (afaik).

Just reply to stuff as you feel comfortable doing here, I don't think anyone of a high rank at least really cares that much.

No the majority don't care, reddit is definitely full of incels though, thats why I've migrated to here  Cheesy

I'm not fussed on whether anyone cares or not, more just curious as to other peoples experiences.

Not your keys, not your coins!
On Internet, info on gender is useless. If a platform does not require KYC from customers and does serious KYC verification, gender info is not correct.

On the forum, the gender stats is
Quote
Male to Female Ratio:    4.6:1

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=stats. The real stats can be the reverse of above numbers. People often fill in info on their identities reversing what they really are.

I took interest in bitcoin in March during the crash (brilliant time to get into it), and instantly jumped on reddit to try and learn as much as I could. As soon as I commented something that involved pronouns aka giving away the fact Im a girl, I learned the crypto subreddit is full of incels.

Rule 1 of reddit: don't reveal you're a girl.
Rule 2 of reddit: Refer to rule 1.

It wasn't gross messages that bothered me, it was how patronising and condescending the users all were. I have done my research and whilst by no means am I an expert, I feel well versed enough in Bitcoin to be talking about it in real life to friends and peers. In real life that is met with vague interest (and a lot of eyerolls given Bitcoins reputation on the surface) but despite this, its a topic they seem to respect my knowledge in. Try to talk about it online though and somehow it feels like 'boys club' whilst they simultaneously complaining theres no girls to talk to.

Have other girls in the forum had similar experiences? I mean surely theres a reason theres such a small online presence of girls on these kinds of forums?

There is no discrimination of male / Female in bitcoin. Even by this post, there is no proof that you are a boy or a girl.
Anyways if you feel discomfortable  in disclosing on the forums that you are a girl , then you have done the same mistake here  Cool

I wouldn't call it discrimination, more an annoying inconvenience. Nor did I mention discrimination, I described my experiences and if that offended you Im sorry but it was kind of relevant to the post.

Also I've disclosed I'm a girl here because I'm asking if anyone else has experienced this and it'd be a pointless ask if I didn't mention my gender. If it makes me feel discomfortable uncomfortable, I'll just make a new account.

So what exactly issues did you faced by disclosing your gender ?  You told it was not about messages so did people do not care about your point of view because you are a girl ?
I am sure no one will have any issues by your gender in this forum and you don't need to make a new account just because everyone knows you are a girl  Smiley

It was how patronising and condescending people became. It was just some comment thread cant remember why gender became relevant but hey ho. It just mean't instead of actual informative responses and whatnot people were just spewing out nonsense or being like 'wOoW A gIrl wHo BItcOiNs' and it gets irritating.

I never said it was a major issue, I said it was annoying.

Also I don't plan on  making a new account over gender, I said that because you said 'then you have done the same mistake here' and I was demonstrating how easily that could be undone.

EDIT

A few people seem to think I'm saying 'all men', 'discrimination', 'oH WoW lOoK aT Me iM a gOrL gIVe atTentIoN pLEs' etc etc.
Im not. If you think I'm saying that then chances are you dont get outside enough.
Bitcoin is literally just a currency, theres no social politics behind it (in terms of discrimination and whatnot). I know theres fewer girls in the crypto scene which is fine, if they aren't interested that isn't my business.

I can see a look of people have commented 'no one cares about gender here' and tbh, that isn't what I asked. I mean its good to read that, but that wasn't the question at hand. I know the majority doesn't care about gender, that is how real life is and how the majority of the internet is. I was just asking after other girls experiences in the cryptoscene in general.

On that note, someone did post the gender ratio and that is informative enough, Ive been lurking for a while and here beats reddit anyway Grin
