Actually, it looks like the problem is centered around whether or not a dummy plug is used.  I've plugged in a real monitor and they are running, although not at full speed.  I will look at them further later.

****  Additionally, if I watch the GUIMiner, the cards will randomly have "connection problem"s, which seems to slow them down, and then the get back up to speed again.  This happens every 20 seconds or so.

Forgot ask which mobo do you use. And could you post your cf settings from CCC.

Nope.  Done and still the problem persists.  Either card will work but they will not work together.  At least now the ATI Overdrive monitor shows the correct workload percentage.

****  Actually, only the primary device 0 card will work with any consistency.  If I try to run the other card alone it quickly fails.

Yes.  Same issue.  Also, when I have CCC open, I can monitor the workload on each card.  The 5850 goes to 100% and the 5870 never goes above 0%.

Have you tried run 5870 as master card(slot 0) and 5850 as slave?

When the 5870 crashes, it is at 48C.

PSU is a MasterCooler 1000, so that's not the issue I wouldn't think.

Right now I have 1GB ram, a 5850 and 5870 with the crossfire ribbon.  The computer sees both cards.  GUIMiner sees both cards (the 5850 is device 0 and 5870 is device 1).  Ultimately, I'd like to run both my 5850's and the 5870 all at the same time.

GUIMiner will run either card without a problem.  The problem is when I start to run both cards at the same time.  The second card being run will immediately crash and drop down to 3Mhps or so while the first keeps running.

I would say that your PSU is not stable/big enough. It would be easier to find out problem if you would post parts of your computer and OS.

When I finally got XP to recognize them both, I ran GUIMiner.  Device 0 ran fine.  Device 1, after being started, with the same settings, crashes the drivers.  I have the latest CCC and all that that entails.  I am running them Crossfire because I only have 1 monitor.

Will using the dummy plugs help?  Do I need different drivers?

I have a 5870 waiting to be used as well, but I want at least these identical cards to work together before tackling that.
