yes Ryzens are very good (and power efficient), I get around 600 with a Ryzen 1800X

The pre-Ryzen AMD FX-83xx series CPUs are surprisingly good at Cryptonight mining. I have both a Ryzen 5 1600 that mines at ~400 H/s and an older mobo with a FX-8300 that mines at ~300 H/s; not bad at all, really.

If you are into using older hardware to save money then HP Z400 boards are awesome for mining in my experience... and cheap (50 bucks on e-bay). Also good six core CPUs are dirt cheap... and RAM is dirt cheap.

You could probably snap them up & do open air cases. I got five cards rolling in one yesterday.

* Motherboard - $50.00

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-X5650-2-66GHz-6-Core-12-Threads-Server-CPU-SLBV3/282811691238?epid=82160987&hash=item41d8e3f0e6:g:YjwAAOSw9Z1aXPS8
* Xeon X5650 - $26.99

* 95-watt LGA 1151 Heatsink - $13.99

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-2GB-2Rx8-PC3-10600E-DDR3-1333MHz-ECC-Unbuffered-Memory-M391B5673FH0-CH9/302484935793?hash=item466d81d471:g:H2UAAOSwehZZ-~wk
* 2 GB RAM $9.95 x 4 (8 Gigs) = $39.80

https://www.ebay.com/itm/PCI-E-to-4-Port-USB-Expansion-Card-Adapter-X1-Riser-Miner-Card-for-Mining-AC991/232552918708?hash=item36253beeb4:g:TjcAAOSw1cNaARcp
* PCI-E Splitter Card = $20.77

$151.55

And you have a setup that will run five GPUs... and a CPU that can do ~200 H/S on Cryptonight algo.

-----

If you want to skip CPU mining you can use even cheaper CPUs... for like 5 dollars like a W3520 or something:

* W3520 Quad Core - $4.68

----------

I personally buy them as full systems with Windows-10 Pro ready to go & build from there:

Yes I did google it, but didn't find any useful information. But I think you've probably answered my question anyway. I suspect the problem might be to do with only one been suitable for newer cards. Shame really, I'll ebay it.

Save boards like these. They fetch good price when rare. For example old sli xfx boards are pretty pricey in nice condition.

I've acquired an old Tyan Tempest 5000XL, figure it's got 3 PCIe slots, it's make a good miner, but as soon as I plug a riser in it won't boot at all.

Anybody any ideas?
It won't even display  POST screen

You can get those cheap mo.bo circuit checkers to see if your riser cards work after plugin then do the same for your mobo slot itself.

Did you even google before asking the question?

Only 1 of these is gen 2 fit for newer graphics card. I think you should ask for some advice on linustechtips forum or tomshardware.
