Hodlhodl is in no way a decentralized platform. People have a misconception about decentralization's definition. Can't believe that since 2018 you still don't get it.
It's a company by the way.

@PrivacyG
I don't get the 'some transaction more automated' you're talking about. Are you referring to some payment methods?
As for the transaction speed of a centralized exchange, that's something I don't care about. As a european, with access to instant SEPA, the money is credited to my bank account the same day. In the end, it takes me maybe ~6 more hours than a CEX. If the money comes at 6.00 am or 11.00 am I don't care.

Never got a problem with people there, except for one time when a person was trying to fool me by using another bank account.
The only thing I regret is when you ask people to add a note like 'buying the motocross' or 'for the holidays' in the payment reference.
They often refuse with all kinds of excuses. It was a popular practice before until Bisq released a new trade protocol.

Compared to some other services the amount of active users is a bit limited,

Very limited. It will change but not if the mentality doesn't change first. (I mean the mentality of people who don't give much importance to privacy, decentralization, etc...)

I have and it is great.  There have been some updates along the years that made some transactions more automated, although even with the latest updates you still obviously do not get the transaction speed of a Centralized Exchange and most of the time you have to choose a price a little bit worse than spot.

Overall however, Bisq is amazing.  You get to do transactions without any intermediary messing up with you or your wallet.  The biggest downside is in my opinion the obligatory deposit for a transaction.  I get why it is there, I get privacy and decentralization has a cost, but it is still a downside nonetheless.  For the safety I get to feel using it though, it is worth the costs it implies.

along with hodlhodl and is a great option for any bitcoiner who is interested in using Bitcoin the correct way.
I don't think HodlHodl is decentralized. Yes, it's a p2p exchange that doesn't require KYC right now, but they may change their TOS any time just like local bitcoins did back then if you look at their term.

No tor service available which means the exchange depends on centralized servers and is not censorship resistant, just bisq.

@citb0in The link in you post is outdated it should be https://bisq.network/
I have been using it on and off for years with no issues.
Compared to some other services the amount of active users is a bit limited, but it has been a long term stable project with a fair amount of development.

Bumping old threads are usually distasteful, but in this case, it fits perfectly.
Great that you discovered bisq. It's one of the most highly recommended decentralized exchanges around the forum, along with hodlhodl and is a great option for any bitcoiner who is interested in using Bitcoin the correct way.

Unrelated but it's odd how much of the early users (from before 2013) are no longer on the forum. Would be interesting to know how many hf them actually still use Bitcoin and why they left bitcointalk.

I apologize for being a necrophiliac because the thread is quite old  Grin But it fits in well here: I am quite new here and was looking for a suitable way to buy BTC on a decentralized exchange without having to go through KYC. In one of my threads I was referred to BISQ and have now made my first experience with it. I have installed it on GNU/Linux, went like a charm. Admittedly, you have to read up and take some time to understand the concept, the prerequisits and important information and how it works in general. But it is worth it. I can recommend bisq without exception, I have already made two trades with it and the platform offers plenty more. It was very fast, I received within hours the funds. Furthermore, there are countless payment options available, the user can decide for himself which way he wants to go.

Just for the sake of completeness, I would like to add that I am not connected with the platform and do not receive any money for advertising, I do not know the people but I have already supported them with a donation, because they deserve it in my opinion. I am happy to have discovered bisq as a decentralized trading platform, I like the concept and vision behind it because it matches the concept of Bitcoin which I fell in love with. Bisq is open-source and has an active developer branch. The wiki and help pages are also very satisfying. Had also logged into their matrix room and I was taken in hand right away and was supported. Simply exemplary. At this point again a big thanks to the entire Bisq development team and their supporters. Thumbs up and keep it up !!!!

I have not actually used bisq in production, only configured it and set up the private key.

It looks like a very good idea, if people value their freedom this is a good exchange, but do the the decentralized nature of it using the scrow service that is built in it is a must.

I did like it, however I did not see an option to use checks, checks are very safe if used properly. That is you walk in the bank that issues the check and request the cash, it either goes though or not.

I will personally be using this exchange in the near future, but I will need to study all the payment options for fiat.

Also it would be nice if a rating option was added to the exchange to rate the sellers and buyers from possible scams.

I came on here to read about peoples usage of the non centralized exchanged Bisq. It is a peer to peer service like napster was and other music sharing services and it looks like it is new so it has not to many users but this is what the world needs to get rid of the governments trying to shape what we do with our money.
