Sorry, apparently it'll do 26.6 while running Linux.
But that's beside the point.  I wanted to know if anyone wanted to have fun coding and exploring the possibilities of how to use these SPUs to their potential.  It might not be much, but it'll certainly expand our programming abilities to ready for the PS4 should it be based on the same programming scheme.   Cheesy
I'm thinking that it can at least hit 30 hashes/sec since we're not running linux.  But who knows what can be achieved if vectors are implemented.  I saw some code that once used a uint64, so who knows?

Maybe on the PS4.  Smiley

Hardware tends to be more competitive when a console is new.

Hardware in it is now pushing 6 years old.  When you consider it was designed about 2 years prior to that is nearly 8 years.  Thats a lifetime when Moore's law is doubling the competition every 18 months.

I don't really think it's worth it.  15 MH/s is like 0.01 BTC per day, so after 3 months you would get a bitcoin, only profitable unless you don't pay for electricity and I'm pretty sure the PS3 would burn out before then.  A year ago this would have been very profitable, but 15 MH/s doesn't cut the mustard like it used to.

However, if you were able to make the GPU usage vary depending on GPU temperature, that would make sure the PS3 doesn't burn out.  In that event, it would be worth using but you won't actually see a profit unless you can get free electricity.

I'd love to see the project work but I'm just a bit skeptical.

Hey everyone!  I was wondering if anyone wants to tackle the daunting work of tossing together a PS3 based miner that you don't have to have Linux to use?  It'll be based off of the PSL1ght SDK and accessible via CFW without the need to install Linux.  This gives it more resources and makes it a viable screensaver for PS3.  It also opens the bitcoin mining scene to any PS3 users.  Via Linux, the PS3 should mine at about 15 Mhashes/s.  However, with some tweaking, I'm sure we could squeeze something more out of it.
If anyone wants to help tackle it, I'm way over my head with this project so it'll be a learning experience.  Anyone up for the fun?
