Transferwise is now dead,

Just to clarify that, ... Transferwise will no longer allow you to withdraw to a Bitcoin exchange.

CurrencyFair still does, I believe, so that's a substitute for Transferwise.

"to be or not to be, that is the bitcoin"

Have a look at using transferwise with one of the exchanges... it's pretty straightforward and will save you a fair bit of money on charges and exchange rates.

If you choose priority payment it always arrives the same day for a small fee, and still a lot cheaper than UKASH or using blockchain.info (they charge something like 6%) or other transfer methods with hefty bank fees...

I use Bitstamp and it always lands quickly and safely, but it works with other exchanges as well. Then you can just move your coins to your wallet and voila Smiley

best wishes and make sure you secure your wallet. I found Electrum to be easy to use and feels pretty safe once I got used to how it works  Wink

im new to bitcoins and would appreciate help from anyone...

I know it's an old thread, but many new BTC buyers may run into this thread, so here's one more option:

https://bitbargain.co.uk/buy

(you always see who's online, what their prices are, you can buy from them instantly via bank transfer, pingit or ukash)

Yup, thats how I've stumbled across here and that's just what I been looking for. Thanks!

Hey guys and girls I am the solution to your bitcoin issues!

I accept UK bank transfer (no need for iban or sepa tranfers, converting to PLN or other long winded methods), cash deposits, pingit and even ukash for a small fee.

I realise that I am completely new here so I understand the initial skepticism. I am advertising my services on ebay under the same username, where I have been registered since 2001 and I have received 866 feedback to date. Not sure whether I can post links so I won't at this stage. Once payment has cleared the coins will sent the same day.

Willing to undertake any vendor verification processes. Will get a website up and running when this takes off.

Get in touch for all of your bitcoin needs.

I really want to start using bitcoins, but the threshold just seems too high, based on what I am reading in this thread.

This thread is four months old.  There have been a few developments, including:

In the UK you have "faster payments" bank transfers:

Or Pingit:

[Edit: Additionally,

here's one more option:

There is no instant bitcoins in the UK as far as i'm aware. Your best bet is one of the big exchanges.

But in the UK you can purchase UKash vouchers.  Those can then be redeemed through a CashU account and used to purchase bitcoins from Bitcoin Nordic:

Bitcoin Nordic accepts cash-by-mail (GBPs) for the purchase of bitcoins.  The are in Denmark:

I really want to start using bitcoins, but the threshold just seems too high, based on what I am reading in this thread. I need to be able to sort this out from the PC, or with a one step visit to a bank or similar. No snail mailing purchased codes off to other countries or similar. I also don't want to invest a fortune in bitcoins, just try it for a few small purchases.

I have spent a while trying to read up on this, but it seems to me that this is a labour of love if you live in the UK.
Or can I actually buy bitcoins online somehow?

If so, please would you help me with a step-by-step?

PS - Intersango, aka Britcoins is registration by invitation only. I don't know anyone who could give me an invitation so that is not an option for me!

You may wanna try intersango.com (bitcoin exchange), if I'm not mistaken they have a UK bank account. You can setup an account, wire transfer some money there, and place an order to buy bitcoins.

Those in the UK don't have the benefit of a cash-deposit method like those in the U.S., Canada, India, Australia, Brazil, and Russia do:

But in the UK you can purchase UKash vouchers.  Those can then be redeemed through a CashU account and used to purchase bitcoins from Bitcoin Nordic:

You might also want to place a buy order on the #bitcoin-otc marketplace:

 - http://bitcoin-otc.com/viewratings.php  - The #bitcoin-otc marketplace Web of Trust (WoT)

Also, you might see if there are any sellers in your area listed with LocalBitcoins:

There is a local trader that will sell bitcoins in amounts of at least 10 BTC for cash, in-person:

There was another thread recently in which an individual offered to do a trade with a bank transfer:

That was learned from:
