Perfect example of what the media does to such a small and almost irrelevant matter. Apple isn't doing this because they're the "good guys", they do this because they want to keep the people happy so their stock shares don't get cut in half over an outrage from ignorant people that would get offended over a flag in an app...

Photon --- The First Child Of Blake Coin --Merged
those who use the confederate flag as a symbol of racist motivations are wrong

actually England and other outsiders bankrolled the south in the civil war to undermine the north

many in the south were sympathetic since the north wanted to limit trade

regardless when things like the tpp pass we will all have many other things to worry about
that will screw everyone over black, white , everybody else too

Wow, that's a ridiculously silly move for Apple to make. I'm surprised that seemingly otherwise intelligence people are doing it; maybe it's because they feel pressured to do it by a media culture of political correctness easily carried away by even slight signs of difference of opinion.

Tim Cook must be a very smart guy. Surely he and other Apple folks don't privately think this is worth doing.

Make up your mind... What is it? And, yes, tim cook IS apple...

Op, can you remove the image from the first post as to not offend?  Grin

I'm glad Apple doesn't stand for or support racism, slavery, or the ownership of another human being. And I'm OK with the fact that as a business they made a decision to not be in the cross-hairs of a newly sparked controversy that has been going on in the US for a very, very long time.

Apple seems to "support" it just fine: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/artist/lynyrd-skynyrd/id97262

Look at all those album covers. And I say "support" because they're not supporting anything to do with slavery by selling stuff that includes a flag. And I hope iTunes are going to remove all rap songs featuring the word "nigger"... sorry "The N Word". As a white person I find it very offensive. Do they not know the damage that was done by that word?

I can't stand this level of PC-pandering. It's ridiculous. If you're offended by a game or anything in it - don't play the game. Problem solved. And what's next? Removing Shindler's List and Inglorious Basterds from itunes? I love how they've been fine with the confederate flag up until a couple of weeks ago.

Haha, "PC-pandering", you're funny.

So it's just politically correct to not be racist?

So it's just politically correct to not condone slavery?

So it's just politically correct to not condone the ownership of another human being?

That's what the Confederacy stood for. That's what that flag stands for. Did you know that in Germany, where the Nazi flag is banned, the Confederate flag is used during neo-Nazi protests? It's a symbol for hate. It shouldn't be illegal for one to own it, but those that celebrate it celebrate all that it stands for.

None of your argument is relevant to anything here. The game isn't racist and it featuring a historical flag does not mean it condones anything. You want games to not be historically accurate just so it can please the PC control? You cannot censor history except  this is usually what tyrants want to do and that's how tragedies and human rights abuses are pushed under the rug in an attempt to be forgotten about. Do you think documentaries, textbooks and films etc should be removed as well? Let's start burning all fact and historical fiction books that feature a flag on the cover or inside so someone like you can sleep a little smugger at night.

It's also funny you say you're glad Apple doesn't support slavery. You should check where the minerals/metals come from to make their iPhones and who's actually making them and for how much.

It's funny that you love puffing up your PC feathers and finger-wagging so much that you say the same thing twice, using only slightly different words.  As if browbeating constituted argument...perhaps in your shitty ghetto school it does?

The Confederacy was defined by the question of secession.  The US Constitution doesn't say States may never exit once they join the Union.

Slavery played a role in forcing that issue, but it was hardly the casus belli alleged by the white-guilt-ridden Marxist SWJs of late.

It's obnoxious and disrespectful to the people who lived/died in the Civil War to second-guess their patriotism, despite soldiers from both sides being buried with honor at Arlington, etc.

You and the insufferable, pandering, revisionist shitlords of Apple truly deserve each other.   Cheesy

This is so stupid.  We can't pretend that history didn't happen, we should remember it and celebrate it.  The confederates did lose the war after all.  The american civil war is very good for strategy games, because there are things like the railroads, rivers, crops, and things that fit very well into a game.

What really makes me angry is apple makes a big deal about a stupid flag, but they have working conditions so bad that they need suicide nets in their buildings.  Just put that into context and think about what is more important.

Apple's move is no different than the stance countries take on visa applications from other countries, would you call that politically correct? It's akin to "No shoes, no shirt, no service."

Apple isn't censoring anything, they're just choosing not to be a disseminator of those games. The game can still be used, sold, enjoyed by anyone who wants it...they just can't do it through Apple. That's not politically correct, it's business.

The only thing I probably agree with you on is the goofiness that they decide to take a stand on it now. More companies should stand behind their morales, we'd have better business in this world as a result. Business should lead with purpose as much as the do revenue or image. Perhaps revenue or image is their purpose, that would be fine as long as they declare it, celebrate it.

Apple could have gone the other route and said "While we personally believe XYZ about the use of the Confederate flag, we believe in the freedom of being able to subscribe to products or services that aren't illegal." This would enable them to share their true purpose with their customer base but not have to pick sides in the controversy to the extent that it impacts their revenue.

AFAIK, apple bans a lot of products from it's store.

You need a licence to create an app, you can only create an app on a mac,.... Bloody expensive to make an apple app if you ask me.

For android, your whole development kit is completely free, and if google doesn't allow your app in their store, you can still spread the .apk without users having to root (jailbrake in apple terms) their device to install your product...

PS: i don't want to start an android-iOS debate, just noticed the price difference between developing an app for both platforms  Grin

Take up Farrakhan's cause, and help him demand Apple, etc. also get rid of the American flag.  Because History!

He's got a point. The Stars and Stripes has killed more people than the Confederate flag ever has and is probably much more 'offensive' around the world than that ever will be.

This is beyond ridiculous, and a useless PR stunt.

They have to remove everything related to pretty much every country in the world if they're going to be impartial, specially European countries, if they're going with the racist argument.

The flag is a part of history. I do not think the games are promoting or glorifying the Confederate ideals, there is no harm showing the flag in the game to be true to history. If anyone is offended by the imagery, they can stop playing the games! Is Apple going to remove WWII games that has the nazi flag too?

I love it *because* it's so ridiculous.

Better to use their own PC black magic against them, until their energies are spent and narratives exploded.  IE:

Dear Apple,

Displaying the American Flag is a micro-aggression.  It triggers me and must be thrown out along with the other unacceptable old symbols of racism/sexism/classism.

Remove all US Flag apps from your store, or suffer the wrath of the SJW army!

Apple's Tim Cook has recently spoke against displaying the Confederate flag, so I suppose this development was to be expected. However, censoring historical games (if that is indeed the reason why the game's have been pulled) is always very tricky because those games don't glorify or promote a cause but, rather, represent historical events using the symbols and insignia of the period. However, I can also see the political and social pressure mounting at the moment, which makes pulling the games the "safest" action for Apple. What do you think? If Apple has indeed pulled the games for displaying the Confederate flag, is Apple's action justified, or was there another way to eradicate racism and remove the symbols and words that feed it, as Tim Cook put it?

Update: It's looking like Apple has pulled everything from the App Store that features a Confederate flag, regardless of context. The reasoning Apple is sending developers is "...because it includes images of the confederate flag used in offensive and mean-spirited ways." We just spoke with Andrew from HexWar Games, who have released many historical strategy games. He insists, "We're in no way sympathetic to the use of the flag in an offensive way, we used it purely because historically that was the flag that was used at the time."

HexWar Games plans on attempting to re-submit their games using the lesser-known 1861 version of the Confederate flag. But, who knows if that will even be approved. No one is sure yet if Apple is banning all mention of the Confederacy, or just the specific image of the flag which has since become such a hot button issue in the USA.

Update 2: We just received a statement from Maxim Zasov of Game Labs, the developers of Ultimate General: Gettysburg. It is as follows:

We accept Apple's decision and understand that this is a sensitive issue for the American Nation. We wanted our game to be the most accurate, historical, playable reference of the Battle of Gettysburg. All historical commanders, unit composition and weaponry, key geographical locations to the smallest streams or farms are recreated in our game's battlefield.
We receive a lot of letters of gratitude from American teachers who use our game in history curriculum to let kids experience one of the most important battles in American history from the Commander's perspective.
Spielberg’s "Schindler's List" did not try to amend his movie to look more comfortable. The historical "Gettysburg" movie (1993) is still on iTunes. We believe that all historical art forms: books, movies, or games such as ours, help to learn and understand history, depicting events as they were. True stories are more important to us than money.
Therefore we are not going to amend the game's content and Ultimate General: Gettysburg will no longer be available on AppStore. We really hope that Apple’s decision will achieve the desired results. We can’t change history, but we can change the future.
