15 April 2013 Update

Short update today, more to come in the next day or two, hopefully.

We've been working on getting the software and firmware nailed down. Things are mostly stabilized at this point and with our current boards (we do not have the redesigned boards in house yet), power usage exceeds the 1w/GH, unfortunately, but it's much better than anything out by 40 - 50%, at the wall. We are gearing up to start shipping out some dev boards and a few Jalapeno's most likely this week (at least a few dev boards) and then as more chips roll in we'll be shipping out the Jalapeno's. When the new boards land in KC, we'll start shipping Little Singles and Singles at that time. I don't currently have a time frame for those, but I should have something later this week in regards to that.

Obviously, the minirig can't fit 1.5 TH/s in a case the size of what we were planning, but we have some interesting solutions with regards to that. Expect and update on there as well, but I did want to let everyone know we have several solutions to solve the minirig issue and we are moving forward on that front.

I did want to quash any rumors that there was something wrong with the chips; there isn't. The chips themselves are fine (other than using more power than we expected), the delay is strictly due to having to re-engineer the power system on the boards (which requires a larger PCB redesign to a degree) and refine/streamline our processes for getting chips from silicon to mounted on boards. Things will be rolling along soon, albeit a bit slow at first, and then picking up speed as the whole process is optimized and finalized.

What a train wreck.   Cheesy

Besides getting software and filmware nailed down, and not having the boards in yet, what exactly are the assemblers doing?

they're probably waiting for design vendors... or they're in the pitch process of finding the new ones which could do the job...either way not good  for the people who gave money... I think the new ASIC machines will show up before the BFL due to the chip sale from Avalon and open source pcb gerber file...

Since it seems nobody has done this yet, here are the actual power specs of what BFL has right now.

Quote
BFL_Josh - With our current power subsystem and it's inefficiencies, I would expect  ~170 MH/J  performance.  That will most likely improve over time as we  refine many aspects of the project

Source https://forums.butterflylabs.com/bfl-forum-miscellaneous/1811-reason-behind-luke-jrs-asics-improved-performance.html#post24151

So based on the original pre-order specs, and based on 200MH/J performance ('cause it's BFL so we'll assume their fudging the truth)

5GH/s60GH/s1500GH/s
25W353W8.8KW

Now you might think "that's cool I'll just take the 25W". But the problem isn't that the power works and it's just not acceptable, the problem is that they can't get 25W to the board - it was never designed for that much power. In electronics you can't just shove as much power as you want into something. All of the power delivery components (supply, regulator, etc) have to handle it.

So they are redesigning the board to handle more power. Then they will have a theoretical Jalapeño. And, god willing, they might actually be able to produce one. But what about the 60GH/s single? That's an entirely new story.

My speculation is pre-order SC singles and Mini rigs are going to be cancelled and a deal offered along the lines of

- One of the new-spec 50GH/s or 10 of the pre-order Jalapeños if you had a pre-order SC single
- 30 of the new spec 50GH/s if you ordered a mini rig

I think the reason they changed the prices and terms is so they can ship the new-spec products, with the new chips, to new customers in a few months. In the mean time they will use progress on Jalapeño to keep the remaining pre-order "customers" at bay, then pull the single and mini rig at the last minute.

tbh it would be much more awesome if my 5 singles were built and delivered in minirig chassis, at least they would look cool (Big is always better right? ;P)

These press updates are bit like those coming out of North Korea.

Our Nuclear missiles will be launching against the US mainland soon (TM).

Our ASIC chips are in final stages of development and will be shipping soon (TM).

Heheh totally...

North Korea : We are now officially at war!

BFL: We are now officially shipping !

You can't really take either parties too seriously after awhile.

1.You're not shipping yet.

2.You've missed your power mark of 1w/GH

3.You don't have a time frame for the new boards.

4.You can;t fit 1.5 TH into your cases you amassed.

5.You have interesting solutions (i.e. increase size of case?) (correct "interesting solution": decrease the # of chips and turn 1.5TH to 750GH while charging 2x the original cost - just like what they did with the Single)

6.The "delay is strictly due to having to re-engineer the power system on the boards".

You mean the delay since...

October 2012?
November 2012?
December 2012?
January 2013?
February 2013?
March 2013?

Wow that wasn't much of an update at all. I think everyone here could have guessed all of those points Josh. LOL so fucking fail. Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Actually, they can made 5 gh units (1 chip on ea. pcb) by use old PCB's (they says that ASIC chips are Ok).
All they need - connect all VoltageConverters on PCB parallel via additional shottky diodes 1N5819 or cheeper ($10 for 1000 pcs.)

They CAN do it now, but question is.... why they won't Wink

pcb alone draws 150w-ish as they noted... too much joules could cause strange heating effects...

Despite the crash in 2011 (which caused me to leave the forums with despondency) each year BTC has grown 1000% roughly.  The recent run up was not healthy.  Anybody who bought last year in the $2 to $6 range is doing well.

Unless you had all your bitcoins in a wallet at InstaWallet like some people I know, then you're pretty well fucked.

Yes, no bitcoin mining for me (in 2013? never?). With the current exchange rate trend it might be better to wait a little bit, push BFL to get my refund (writing more mails, open additional 'where is my refund' threads) and buy the BTC.

I had a fairly decent trailing stop strategy, but failed to monitor it when it crashed. Probably would have got out at just below $240. It would be nice if the exchanges offered dynamic stops - especially stops based on user defined algorithms. Would be even better if a company like Trade Station opened up a bitcoin trading platform and exchange.  http://www.tradestation.com/

Should've bought Avalon.

Almost 1 year from the date of initial preorder and all they can ship in "2 weeks" is a 4.5GH/s unit that would eat 20-30W?  Would have been better buying a 7850 last year and mining with that for the last 10 months...

So glad I ordered a Batch 3 and got my refund from BFL.

Yeah, tell me about it. Or even better, just buying bitcoins. I wonder if buying and holding have worked from the very beginning, because the return on investment time is nearly a year on most stuff. Except for Avalon, anyone with them in hand has probably blown past their ROI's in the first month.

Why do people keep saying they are shipping? They aren't shipping anything to customers - Josh himself only ever said in his update (and you have to read carefully, which is something of a lost art) that they would ship out dev boards and Jalapeno dev units. Dev unit means a prototype that is used internally / semi internally; not a finished product.

This means that they are either just lying out of their ass or are in way over their heads and are just making shit up as they go.

Haha, dude.. I want you to read this, it was posted by Josh last October.

Quote
Attached are some more pictures of the Jalapeno. It's in one of it's prototype homes, but the design is changed and we are waiting on the updated box to be delivered now. However, the fundamental design will remain unchanged, just some cosmetic changes (laser etched top, no silver, etc...)

We are not going to make the first half of November shipping goal. Right now, I want to say fourth or fifth week of November, but lots of little issues have cropped up, pushing the shipping date out a bit here and there. To be on the safe side, I would estimate the end of November / beginning of December as a likely ship date. We've had some trouble sourcing the VFD screens for the Minirig SC; the wharehouse told us they had about 5x as many screens as they really have on hand, so we are coming up short. The good news is that we've come up with an alternate solution that is so full of awesome, I am going to save that for a later update. It is, however, necessitating a redesign of the Minirig SC case, though it won't really affect the timeline in any material fashion, as it's just one part that needs to be changed a bit to accommodate the new screen.

We are also still waiting on the HSF for the Single SC to show up - the factory has been a bit slow in that department, so that set things back a bit.

We expect the final chip versions to be in our hands in ~25 days, with final assembly and shipping to begin a few days after that.

Looks like BFL is finally getting close to shipping something.  At least the Jalapenos will start shipping as they can put a larger power supply on the thing and it's good to go.  I wonder how many they plan to ship.  The early units will be inferior in terms of energy usage but at least users will see something after BFL missed October 2012 to February 2013 shipping dates.

What I find most troubling is that the previous update from over 2 weeks ago stated "We plan on shipping possibly by the end of next week" but today they claim "We've been working on getting the software and firmware nailed down" lol. This means that they are either just lying out of their ass or are in way over their heads and are just making shit up as they go. I really can't think of a third explanation so I'm really pondering canceling my pre-order and pray my batch #2 Avalon's come through...

If I was BFL, I would do this to keep people happy.  Offer people with early orders the chance to double down on their units and continue easy refunds.  This would shake out the weak hands like with the recent BTC crash and keep the loyal fans on and happy.  There'd probably be much less negative press and whining too.

My guess is that Jalapeno only has 1 asic so power problem can be fixed by external power pak ( just a BOM change) and they have some of the old PCB
in stock that they can use  -----   30 Gh  need new PCB and they need to wait for the pcb to arrive -- 60 GH my guess will be 2 x 30 GH

anyway we should all know later this week

I suppose if they missed the 1GHs/Watt target, then that would have little effect on the small Jalapeno model, but be a total headache for the largest 1,500 GH/s Bitcoin Miner rig, that could end up needing multiple power supplies.

My guess is:

Little singles become Jalapenos.

Full singles become Little ones.

Full singles need board redesign to handle extra wattage.

So there's nothing wrong with the chips, except that they are so far out of spec that the minirig and jalapeno can no longer exist. other than that small issue, they're fine.

But the OP says that the Jalapeno is the first thing they are shipping, I don't understand what you mean?

Wait, since they missed their power target does this mean they're donating 1,000 BTC to charity now?

Yup, one more issue Josh has not addressed.

Still waiting... Roll Eyes

So everything we've been saying for the past 2 weeks, except when we say it, it's "trolling"

I did want to quash any rumors that there was something wrong with the chips; there isn't. The chips themselves are fine (other than using more power than we expected),

So there's nothing wrong with the chips, except that they are so far out of spec that the minirig and jalapeno can no longer exist. other than that small issue, they're fine.

1.You're not shipping yet.

2.You've missed your power mark of 1w/GH

3.You don't have a time frame for the new boards.

4.You can;t fit 1.5 TH into your cases you amassed.

5.You have interesting solutions (i.e. increase size of case?)

6.The "delay is strictly due to having to re-engineer the power system on the boards".

You mean the delay since...

October 2012?
November 2012?
December 2012?
January 2013?
February 2013?
March 2013?

Wow that wasn't much of an update at all. I think everyone here could have guessed all of those points Josh. LOL so fucking fail.  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy
