It's less about 144 per day, but more about the 10 minutes per block.
Each new block needs some time to propagate to all miners to know about it and start working on the next block.
Satoshi thought, 10 minutes should be ok for that and it seems to work out pretty well so far.

I read that a block is made every 10 minutes.

If that's the case, then as there are 1440 minutes in a day (24*60), then as 1440/10 is 144, it would mean 144 blocks are made daily.

Is this right, or am I talking crap?

Yes your right. 144 give or take. 10 minutes per block is only an average.

Yes, that's right, at least that's the target the difficulty aims for.
There's a few blocks more created per day with a rising network-hashrate, that's why the difficulty rises to keep the average around 144.
