what is rdp

Kind of off-topic, but it's Remote Desktop Protocol. (Used for remote access.)

I ordered one of these a few days ago, and expect to get it by the end of the week. It was labeled in my cart as some kind of strange "1x female to 2x male" cable, and not a PCIe riser, but I figured I'd take the risk, since it's only 10 bucks. (Though the higher price would start to add up for larger orders.)

All of my current risers are powered x1 to x16 ribbon cables, so this is my first USB riser. I'm hoping that Rosewill (effectively Newegg's go-to store brand) will offer slightly better quality control than the no-name manufacturers, but it's probably hit-and-miss either way. (Rosewill might even just be rebranding those of an existing producer.)

Cheap and possibly reliable Newegg riser: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA72562E8994

Keep in mind these all ship from China and you can possibly get better quality risers at better prices from Alibaba and/or AliExpress. It'll take them a while to come but it's all worth it. Alternatively you can buy risers shipped from the US but you do pay a price premium for them.

x1 to x16 risers can help you be more universal, since you can use any physical PCIe slot for mining, however, they are not "better" for mining performance. Additionally, using risers can give you more flexibility with card placement (and thus cooling) outside of your case.

This is 100% correct. They are not more efficient but it takes less PCIE lanes on your CPU. Most cheap cpus are limited to 16 PCIE lanes so just having 1 16x GPU would max out the CPU. By using a 1x you can put up to 16 GPUs before you max out the PCIE lanes on your CPU.

The only downside I have found with using 1x risers, is that when I do a 4k RDP session to a miner, the production on GPU0 really goes down.  Once I realized this, I reduced my RDP resolution to 1280x1024.

For  Ethereum, it might slow the "load the DAG" stage some - but I've not noticed a significant difference on my triple-card rig between the pair of PCI-E v3 8x slot cards and the PCI-E v2 4x slot card, so even there it would be a minor difference at most.

i was wondering if i had gotten a riser for my graphics cards if they would mine ether better then say just having a gpu installed in a x16slot and a x8 slot?

also does anyone have any they recommended? preferably on newegg as i get free ship there.

PCIe bandwidth does not matter much for mining on the vast majority of algorithms, just make sure that you use a powered riser if your graphics card needs one (most are better off with one), since using an unpowered riser can cause damage to your motherboard if you aren't careful. (One low-end card, like an HD 7770 is probably fine with an unpowered riser, but multiple cards or more powerful ones can cause problems.)
