In a way it is, and also a more risky form of investment. Many of these projects don't even have a working product, and because it is an unregulated space, some creators will take advantage of the situation to act irresponsibly.

Are altcoins just another way of crowdfunding? As an investor, this is my general view of most altcoins. I see it as more of an investment into business models that I feel will help shape our future as a society. What are your thoughts?
Your thoughts is right. Most of the new altcoins are really a "business models that will help shape our future as a society". There New coins that are at the ICO crowdsale level and if you study they white paper very well you will find out that there are there to better our society and resolve some past issues we have.

But the Altcoins are supposed to be currencies and not investment models but it seems most Altcoins are just interested in crowdfunding and eventually the investors get scammed if the coin turns into a shitcoin.

Essentially yes..

Some alt coins offer profit share which make them more similar to equity ownership like stocks.

Altogether, the altcoin market is mostly held up by speculation and hope for future gains. Because in reality there is no real value backing most these coins (besides the ones that offer profit sharing)

i see altcoin as the last resort, to acquire easily many bitcoin, before it's too late to get them, bitcoin will be more and more rare to get when the value will get higher, with altcoin you cna have now a very good return with a low investement, i also see them as the best investment now, with all of them growing at once, you can't go wrong lol

I disagree with you so much... in so many things... That I don't even know where to start

Personally, I see altcoins as a way to get into bitcoin itself, with ASICs dominating BTC people with no Capital like me use altcoins in exchange to BTC.
Think about that with ETH mining you can engage in bitcoin with a mere 250$ you just buy a RX 580 and within 2 months you can afford a second one from mining. That way you could expand until your personal rig cant handle any more GPUs.

They're a way for startups to get quick funding for their ideas as long as they are somewhat related to the blockchain. When they're not related they just relate them in a weird way and launch an ICO.

Totally correct point of view! If a project is somehow linked to blockchain technologies, it won't be hard for the project to get a good amount of funding.

I'm glad you opened this topic. I'm not an expert but I'm a bit scared when I see "legendary" and highly qualified members here talking about all alt coins like they are simply alternatives methods of payment... I think this very reductant and most important, I think this urgently needs to be discussed here.

And to answer you, yes, I think you are right, it is a new more transparent way for crowdfunding. But not only that, it is much better. Here's what I wrote yesterday answering another topic:

You can call them coins, but you can also call them tokens. Some of them are tokens of a specific new company with a specific new product developed with blockchain technology. You buy those tokens the same way you buy stocks, with a plus that those can be used within the company or traded for other tokens. Also they are scarce, with limited supply. There are numberous ways that blockchain can be implemented to make things cheapier and more efficient.

Hope I could help

I completely agree. I think most people come into altcoins as a fiat currency alternative like Bitcoin. Yet, if you really do some research about blockchains and smart contracts you'll realize that this technology has so much more potential than just a digital currency.

Just to add this information, some highly qualified members here are right when they say some alt coins are pure scams. And I think because they are here for a longer time than us they seen those scams more often. And maybe because of that they stoped believing.

My guess it that sometimes it's better to discover something in the right time, rather than discover something earlier than everyone else...
