Thanks for the reply Ralph this is helpful.  So if miners switch algorithms/coins do they typically re-edit all of their cards memory timings?  Or do miners typically set their rig up for one coin and stick with it?  I'm reading your blog post right now!

Both.  In the future the mining programs will adjust the memory timings.  I've been looking into doing that with ethminer for a while now, but zawawa will probably beat me to it with GatelessGate Sharp since he seems to be putting a lot more time into miner development.

Hi Guys,

Monero miner here.  Recently I started tweaking my cards and edited the bios to change the memory timings on my 580's. This is the only modification I have made at this point.  I found some memory timings that worked very well and have ran stable for a week mining Monero on cryptonite with no crashes.

I just now tried mining ELLA and ETH on ethash and my cards are crashing within minutes of booting my rig. This leads me to believe the memory timings are algorithm specific but I can't find a clear cut answer on this.  Can a more experienced miner confirm this for me please?  I would like to try mining different coins and considering going back to the stock memory timings to allow this flexibility. Thanks for your input!

There's some other threads you could read that discuss memory timing and straps.  In theory, you could make a "universal strap" that works well in ethash, equihash, and cryptonight, but I haven't seen one yet.
You'll probably also learn some things from my blog post on GDDR5 memory timing.
