That's an interesting side effect I didn't see ^^

The point is avoiding to put 4+ GPUs into a rig and burning 1 kW of electricity. But I guess you can easily burn 1 kW on a quad socket server too :-)

 So there are pure CPU coins? Can you give me some examples?

CPU only coins are ruled by botnets, most of which are operating illegally, so what's the point?

I am thinking about an hashing algorithm which uses some more memory, like scrypt, which does some clever things with an pseudo random table which is generated from the starting hash seed.

To make it GPU resistant it would need to defeat the heavy parallelization - maybe some branch-heavy code in which the branches depend on a pseudo random condition.


Are there any hashing algorithms with these properties known? Or any other ideas? :-)
