I read about Ripple recently and I think it is really interesting idea.
How does it work if someone owes me (eg.) 100 USD, and I'd like to convert it to its JPY equivalents? Is this possible?

I like how ripple could be a multi currency wallet but am not so sure about how the value of the XRPs will hold up.  I registered too late for the current giveaway, so I hope there will be another.

The main bad thing about the ripple is the whole premined, free giveaway (e.g.) unfair distribution of coins.

Ripple seems like a cool idea. But just like gpg I think its too complex for the average user.

It could get rid of BTC-E and MTGOX, but the GUI needs alot of work.  Very BETA now.  I'd say that I'd believe in it more if I could buy a pizza there (and not have to wait on a confirmation like that pizza site).  ATM, only two Gateways created and they are just exchanges.

Also, there is no directory of businesses yet.  Stuff like that to give it the "community" feature that Bitcoin lacks.  Potential undelivered at this time.

Not if BTC-E and MtGox become 'trusted' Ripple Gateways.

The original idea was pretty interesting, but the current implementation seems like just another scamcoin.

I don't know much about it but just read about it on Wikipedia. Alarm bells were ringing when I saw this.

Note that the Ripple protocol itself wouldn't preclude a hierarchical payment structure evolving, it just allows for the possibility of other structures.

If it allows a hierachical payment structure that means it allows being controlled by a centralised power which then gets us back to square one. I think we can expect a lot of competitors to bitcoin to spring up with allowing hierarchical structures as part of their hidden agenda.

I'll stick with bitcoins

edit: so to answer the original question I say its a rival.

I well its opensource (soon IIRC) and anyone can start a 'trusted' Gateway.  So if it gains momentum and takes off I think it will greatly ease and decentralises further the buying and selling of bitcoins.

Ripple really lacks appeal IMHO... its a grand idea, but I think it relies on the wrong principles.

Several days ago I discovered ripple. Do you think you it is a complement to bitcoin? Or is it a rival?
