The file formats are. There is a standard for deterministic derivation though.

This almost sound like wallet backups are wallet-specific.

Can anyone confirm on this?

Armory does not interface with other wallet formats at all. 0.97 will support BIP32/44/39 so you could reconstruct wallets following that standard in Armory in that version.

Alright, so what if I make up my mind and buy a 64-bit machine and install Armory, will Armory support password-protected Multibit .key files with the ability to send, receive, and track the bitcoin savings (i.e. not just monitoring the address)?
