Why will it not open smoothly or remain on my desktop after closing the terminal?

Are you very familiar with Linux?
If you launched it from a terminal, closing the terminal will close the program execution environment and thus the program.

I installed Ubuntu 12.04 as well as BtcoinQt.  Everything worked fine.

Is Linux Armory more stable than Ubuntu Armory?

With which OS is the cold storage more effective?

Linux is a kernel, and Ubuntu uses said kernel.
