The incident that happened on the 9th of September 2023 in Maiduguri Nigeria caused me to think more deeply on human safety, that are we even safe at all in some cases, or if an uncertainty happened unexpectedly, are we preparing for a (plan B) to serves as rescue in case of natural disaster occurrence, with the ways on how we save our cryptocurrency private keys (seed phrase), i think its time that we begin to look into so many things we overlooked as before now.
Quickly, i will like to remind us concerning the experience in Bangladesh as flood destroy and displace many lives and properties over there
https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2024/8/28/i-have-lost-everything-bangladesh-floods-strand-1-24m-families those affected in didn't planned or expect to see such happened, but they almost lost everything including their lives.
Recently in Nigeria, Alo Dam in Maiduguri also break out due to overflow as a result of heavy rainfall and some also said that this was as a result of other dams linking to the said Alo dam being released because of overflooding which they avoided and caused the break out of Alo Dam in Maiduguri Nigeria
What happened the other day in Maiduguri regarding the flood was a natural disaster which couldn't be controlled by anyone but could have been tamed by the government or at least reduced its effect on the people generally. In more developed countries, there used to be things like red alert or an alarm information the residents on the possibility of flooding and how they can reduce its effect at least by putting them in the knowledge of the possibility of such natural disaster.
Though, they are also not as perfect as we have seen instances, for example, in Dubai where the flood almost float away the whole city and people or the government could do little to rescue people and we witnessed how airplanes were flowing on the water.
This the effect of natural disasters which are barely controllable by any government, however, many governments try to prevent it by developing measures which can curtail it from occurring in the first instance or install alarm systems which will inform the public when such dangers are about the occur. In this case, if the alarm systems are in check and ringing, you want to quickly move your valuables into safe boxes and have them stored in a safe environment where water cannot touch or fire cannot engulf, including your private key or seed phrase.
Why not ask yourself this, if you're in Maiduguri or Bangladesh to experience flood like these.
What could have happened to your seed phrase backup material or location, mobile device and computers, internet device and connectivity, not to talk of your own personal life and safety.
If I was a victim of this natural trajedy, I don't think my seed phrase will be tempered with because I've specially made provisions of not storing my private keys in one location. I have a resident and a hometown, both locations are places I visit on timely basis and I have my private keys stored in both locations for the sake of safety and precautionary measures to my assets.
If the flood had occurred in my hometown, in Borno for instance, I still have a backup in my residence in Abuja to fall back on. I have also protected the keys by digging hole in my bedroom to store it in a plastic. I don't think the flood will get to the level of digging it out and should in case it does, I can always replace it with what I have in my residence.
