I built a machine with this configuration:
8 x 1080ti (Mix of MSI, Asus and Evga cards, all with 2x8 Gpu plugs)
1 x Evga 1600W P2 (6 GPUs)
1 x Evga 750W G2 (2 GPUs)
1 x Asus Z270-A (on 750W)
6 x Delta AFB1212SH (Should draw 6W each, total 36W connected to 750W)
While testing 100% power limit, and Delta fans on full, something
poofed and there was some
burnt electrical smell. After checking all parts, the motherboard is dead. PSU's are still working.
I guess the 1080ti could draw 300W at most, so if the power spiked, there would be 300+300+150+36 = 786W on the 750 PSU.
On the 1600 PSU, it could potentially draw 1800W if all cards used 300W.
1) Could a PSU overload break the motherboard?
2) Shouldn't the PSU shut down if the load is too much?
3) Should I RMA the mobo, or did I break it?
4) What should I do to prevent this from happening again?
5) Should I set a flat curve in Afterburner to prevent the card from jumping up/down in power usage?
To give enough power, I'm considering using 1300W G2 for 3 cards + system and 1600W P2 for 5 cards. This should work, right?
