some gpus with only their risers and mobo on atx psu and rest of gpus+riser on separate server psu. first need to turn on server psu and then atx.

thank you all Wink

Keep in mind that some cards got very hot if external power is on, but mobo/riser is powered off. It can consume 10-20W without fan moving  and can fry itself after some time.
If you power riser and pci-e power from the same psu, then you avoid this situation.

avoid all that bs.

Just get a evga 1600 watt Titanium efficiency 96 percent for $170 on ebay.

Plenty of people dumping their evga 1600 watt T2 titanums on ebay ever since the crypto market crash.

I've been running my 24/7 for the past 2 years.  no problems

Hi,

From what I have read I have seen many different ways to connect risers/gpus and atx+server psu

In my experience I have worked with ATX + Server PSU (HP 750W/1200W) and I can tell you what has been working for me:

  • ATX PSU for Mobo+Couple GPUS and their risers.
  • Server PSU for risers and GPUs.
  • If you use more than one server psu, each GPU and their risers are in the same PSU

If you use breakout board will make the Server PSU on when ATX PSU is on. The system can work fine without it but Server PSU will be always on (GPUs + Risers). In some cases you would need to turn off Server PSU to recover the GPUs from a crash, rare but happens when finding the right overclock, nothing to worry if you have an stable system or if you can restart it physically.

Avoid:
Using different PSU for riser and gpu. Instead use the same PSU for the same GPU and its riser.
Using sata connectors for risers or using more than 2 risers per cable from ATX PSU.

You have to power the Server PSU first, because you need the motherboard to recognize the GPUs in the system. If you do it reversed, the system will not show the GPUs from Server PSU.

Cheers!

Hello,

i wanted to do this long time ago, however now is the time. i want to power my rigs with 1 ATX psu and one server psu and i do not want to make a mistake and some damage to HW.
so here are my questions and would really appreciate someones advice.
- My intention is to power mobo and 1-2 cards+only their risers with ATX psu and rest GPU+their risers with server psu+6-8pin splitters as gpu wants 8pins.
- May i connect with atx psu all risers and with server psu only all GPUs?
- is ok to use BITMAIN power suply without breaking board as i have one to spare and want to use it too?
- what shall i power first? someone says server psu, others atx first, others they should be on same wall, etc

im a bit confused, so would be nice to have what works and what combination doesn't and what to avoid at all cost.

thank you in advance.
